Can't isolate Zappa sample in CTP. Please help.

Greetings!

According to princevault.com,

The {Bizarre!} sample used in (miscellaneous) songs is originally from 'Our Bizarre Relationship' by Frank Zappa (from Uncle Meat, 1969). It was one of the preset samples in the Fairlight CMI sample-synthesizer and Prince it from there.

It was utilized it in quite a few songs recorded between 1985 and 1987:

  • All My Dreams
  • Bob George
  • Christopher Tracy’s Parade
  • Lovesexy
  • Madhouse songs “Nine”
  • and “6 (The End Of The World Mix)

all contain this sample.

I can hear the sample in every song cited EXCEPT “Christopher Tracy’s Parade.” Is it buried in the mix? Where exactly is the sample used?

Thanks in advance,
Treaux

Right at the start of this spoken word bit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xca9B62_-JE

Its usually pitched up or down on the Prince songs.

You will recognize it instantly

Trippy. Never knew this, although it was instantly recognisable - It's pitched really up in Lovesexy, Bob George and Nine.

I agree, I can't say I've ever heard it in CTP either.

Wait, where? I can't place this "bizarre!" quote on any songs that I know but now I am really curious.

Right at the very end of Bob George, before Prince says "Bob!... Ain't that a bitch!" it's the squeally vocal sample.

I've ran Christopher Tracy's Parade through tons of filters, I've isolated the center, removed the center, I don't hear that sample in this song.

Keep your headphones on.

So I presume Zappa got paid for it re it being a Fairlight preset. Interesting.

Very interesting that Zappa has been indirectly sampled throughout Prince's work!

LOL! My stereo has always picked that " sample" up! I thought it was part of the song 4 all this time, u learn something new every day! Had no idea it was a sample probably due 2 the fact that it blends in with Prince's style of having alot of background vocalizing in his songs & the fact that it rhymes with car! It definately fits where he placed it, wouldn't have known if i hadn't opened this thread!lol

Prince once tried 2 change his name 2 a symbol so that ur'e mother couldn't find him in the phonebook!

I wonder why he didn't work it into "A Love Bizarre." He had 12 minutes to fit it in.

By the way, thanks to the OP. I love this thread. It's incredible to learn something new about songs I've been listening to for 25 years.

He used a couple of Fairlight samples in various songs, the dog bark for "La La La Hee Hee Hee" and the restaurant crowd noise looped with increasing pitch on "Witness". He definately must of used more for some Parade era outtakes - anyone else spotted them?

You can buy a CDROM of all the original Fairlight samples. Prince used quite a few of them.
