i find it impossible to pick his best funk song, or even a top 10, out of his 1980-1990

material. there are just too many tracks.

you start off by thinking "ah, that one" but then you think "oh, and that one, and ooh

let's not forget that one".

i guess the last track that i considered to be truly genius funk (funk n roll, really), is

F.U.N.K.

that one floors me every single time.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

my favourite funk song is

THE BALLAD OF DOROTHY PARKER

followed closely by If I was your girlfriend.. the bassline.

I know these songs are slow, but they are deeply funky.

I don't think the groove is very original or interesting... ...now try to hit me even harder! wink

BTW: I'm quite surprised that Musicology was mentioned so often. Though I can appreciate the infectious groove, the song seems to go nowhere, more like a nice idea that didn't become any bigger.

[Edited 11/6/10 11:14am]

I think the groove on BJB is a classic-sounding groove and it just goes on and on and on in that song. The longer the better!

I like Musicology to an extent, too, but I wouldn't ever put it close to being one of his funkiest. It's a pretty tame, phoned-in sort of song.

I think musicology is bland, the song after it (pimp coma), now that was funky.

Let's Work and DMSR of course.

With regards to songs not yet mentioned, I've been seriously digging the bass on the unreleased version of:

Come

(the released version is funky too, in its own way...)
