Prince Announces New Concert Series

http://www.bvnewswire.com...rt-series/

Today, Prince headed to Harlem to the iconic Apollo Theater to announce he would be serving as Master of Ceremonies for a new concert series called 'Welcome To America,' which will be kicking off this December.

Though he was mum on details like dates and tour stops, the 52 year-old singer/songwriter told the crowd that 'Welcome to America' will showcase some of his favorite artists including Maceo Parker, Janelle Monae, Mint Condition, Esperanza Spalding, Cassandra Wilson, Lalah Hathaway and Sheila E.

The Minnesota native also confirmed that he and the New Power Generation would also perform nightly alongside featured acts.

"If you've been to one of my shows, then you know what time it is," the usually media shy artist joked. "You need to come early and come often because every time we play it's always something new. I got a lot of hits. Bring friends, bring children, and bring foot spray because it's gonna be funky."

"I didn't want to talk too much but how many have seen 'Waiting for Superman,' " he asked before bringing out Harlem Children's Zone head Geoffrey Canada who also spoke briefly about how grateful he is Prince chose Harlem as the venue to announce the series.

Prince will play a special guitar for the duration of the concert series and then auction off the guitar for the benefit of Harlem Children's Zone.

BET's President of Music Programming Stephen Hill, a long-time fan of 'The Purple One,' introduced Prince to the throngs of media outlets present at the press conference. A few months back, the network awarded Prince with a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2010 BET Awards.

Hill reminisced on his first Prince concert in 1982 at the Apollo and more recently flying to Nice, France to see his two-hour set and another two-hour long after-hours set. "I know what I hope he's here to announce," but admitted he was out of the loop on what the big announcement was.

At the press conference, Prince also debuted the full version of his new song 'Rich Friends.'

Earlier this year, he released his album '20Ten' in newspapers across Europe and in the UK, but refused to allow access to the album to digital download services.

Simply 2 cool 4 words.

Wonder what the "special guitar" is, that he'll use then give away...

Nice that the posters had him with a Bass.

...and U know what kind of Bass that is.

This is no "revue" of the standard type. This will be a storm.

Prince's energy level on the recent European gigs was high, new, and reminiscent. I'm pretty sure that all of the PurpleHeads out there will get their share of P, so no worries about less... not with Prince. His energy is clearly on a major upswing.

No, sorry. It was there -- it's a gold plated Fender.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Is that accidental or is he wearing Michael Jackson like sunglasses ?

I think he makes a special effort replacing Wacko Jacko as Waco Purple Yoga or something.

Calling all this event to air a new song and announce a tour without set dates. This guy is something special. Its sad because its long gone when this weirdness served him in any way. Event the articles already describe him as unreliable and keep a slight touch of mock. I wander who's his advisors are ...

Having said that, I know I am a fool. After swearing not to do it again, after the Geneve cancellation and all, I am off to Rome again. Crossing my heart he will feel like taking the stage and giving a show that night.

I just realized Prince also mentioned comedian "Sinbad" as part of the lineup, just before he mentioned Sheila E's name. I somehow missed that when he was calling out the names of artists that will be part of this event.

This is super exciting and I hope Prince plays most of the shows and doesn't get too lost in these other artists. It will be nice I guess to see some of these other artists, since I don't listen to any of them really. But I'm really only excited about Mint Condition b/c I use to like them. And I'm thinking it will be cool to see JM too since she is Prince's fave new artist. Nevertheless, I will be attending many of the shows if I can get tickets, so hopefully Prince will deliver!! Wait, he always delivers! Hopefully he will deliver alot and make these concert about his music, I shall say...

Am I the only one here that thinks that this is not gonna be a tour? It dosent sound like that to me. He´s gonna be serving as a Master of Ceremoies and just showcast diffrent bands diffrent night, maybe stepping now and then and play a song.

I saw a Bootsy Collins: A Tribute to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown show here in Stockholm that was like that. Bootsy was on like 15 min or something like that. sad

How can anybody question the lineup? Janelle Monae music is played often here on Dutch TV youth dance programmes; Esperanza Spalding's concert next Friday was sold out a while ago, she's one incredible talent. Maceo Parker need we say more????? I don't know about the Ms Wilson but I trust Prince's choice.

He's supporting local artists; he's promoting America which sure needs it after recent years; and that AWESOME guitar will be auctioned for a good cause to support a non-profit organisation that invests in childrens education. Prince adhere's to his word. In the BET awards he also mentioned that American's new generation of music was going places and that America was going to "show the world" can't remember the exact text. He's got the energy and passion to keep driving forward, going places, and ingenuity to deliver new concepts. Chapeau to him.

Maybe a large part of Prince's "older fan base" can't appreciate the new generation's music but isn't that a classic stereotype characterisation of getting old. Good that he said "bring your kids" cool

Thanks to everyone for the tweets, pics and video. It was nice to be kept so updated.

I'm looking really forward to seeing Prince as MC! razz It's a personable job and he'll be interactive with the audience so we'll get to see another facet of the Purple One. I think it's a step in the good direction too for his own character and persona development for the public eye.

WTF is "new" about any of this?

Maybe a large part of Prince's "older fan base" can't appreciate the new generation's music

Yes, that must be it. Now lemme get back to listening to:

- Netsky's album,

- Goose's "Synrise",

- Aeroplane's "We Can't Fly",

- Autolux' "Transit Transit",

- Balthazar's "Applause",

- Band Of Horses' "Infinite Arms",

- Diplo And Don Diablo's "Make You Pop",

- Duck Sauce's "Barbra Streisand",

- Dum Dum Girls' "I Will Be",

- Flying Lotus' "Cosmogramma",

- Gonzales' "Ivory Tower",

- LCD Soundsystem's "This Is Happening",

- Les Savy Fav's "Root For Ruin",

- M.I.A.'s "MAYA", Maximum Balloon,

- Roots' "How I Got Over",

- Sufjan Stevens' latest,

- the "Ninja Tune XX" box set.

How many of those have you heard of? And that's just a small slice of my current musical diet.

I'm looking really forward to seeing Prince as MC! razz It's a personable job and he'll be interactive with the audience

Hilarious. When has he ever done this?

He's supporting local artists; he's promoting America which sure needs it after recent years; and that AWESOME guitar will be auctioned for a good cause to support a non-profit organisation that invests in childrens education.

Yeah, why get political and you know, demand YOUR GOVERNMENT to invest in education instead of the war machine, when you can support one frikking charity and come out like a saint. Funny how He Who Is Number One At The Bank once again uses OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY to make himself look good. Hey Prince, how about DONATING some of YOUR OWN money?

Oh, and has he mentioned John Legend & The Roots' "Wake Up"? Noooooo, can't do that, because that's politics. And his current imaginary deity of choice doesn't allow that.

Ah, Barty... Forever the Org's....

I think it's a step in the good direction too for his own character and persona development for the public eye.

nod Co-sign. If the lineup isn't your taste, fine, but these are talented and critically acclaimed artists. Prince has a preference for r&b, soul, jazz and old school funk so that's what he's gonna have on his shows. I understand that a lot of orgers would have preferred if he toured the States instead of, as it seems, stay in one city, but at least he's back in the States. And that for a while, so I'd be happy cool

Just in case that was the only place you've seen her, I recommend you look for her music and videos either at her website or on YT.

I really didn't like that performance, then I saw the article about Prince going to see her perform at First Ave and Janelle and her band going back to PP etc... and figured she was worth another listen.

I watched the Tightrope vid and was hooked. Now I have her album and I love it.

I've re-watched the BET tribute and, after getting to know her style, I actually get what she was doing with it...I still don't think it was the best choice, but it made more...sense, I guess.

(Apologies of course if you know all about her and her music and her style and still just don't like her work)

In other words a Newpower Soul tour, but this time without Chaka.

Don't think it's going to be anything we have not seen before. Being surrounded by an audience being polite but inwardly resentful to the other acts and just hoping to see him.

I would rather less of the other acts and more of him, like the 3121 shows in LV. Unless he comes with this to my home town, this sadly is not something I fancy making a special trip on a plane for.

I think this is a fantastic thing for Prince to be doing. Yes, it would have been better if he had announced dates and venues too, but still. There were people from Livenation there who said afterward that the dates and venues would be announced soon. (I'm still really hoping that the Apollo will be a mainstay for the series.)

And it's very cool that he's auctioning off the guitar for Harlem Children's Zone. That's a great thing for him to support.

I'm really looking forward to more details and am excited to see how it comes together.

And I'm really, really excited that Sheila's going to be a part of it.

I think he should take to the road with the full show he just did in Europe this summer, rather than some dull homage revue with some has beens and wannabes.

That's great, but I think you're in the minority when you look at the big picture. Prince hasn't thrilled the mass audiences in a while, and I don't think this lineup helps. Years ago when Prince announced acts like Lenny Kravitz, Gwen Stefani, etc., people actually paid attention. That ain't happening this time around.

It's MID-OCTOBER and we have to believe they aren't yet sure of the DATE(S) and the VENUE(S) (and the ticket price) but they can announce a line-up? I'm supposed to believe that all these artists are keeping a huge hole in their agendas because "somewhere in December" they're gonna do a show, or maybe several shows?

These are concerts that are supposed to take place in DECEMBER, just about the busiest social month and littered with events that have been planned weeks and months ahead, and also an expensive month. But when you're a Prince fan, you're supposed to drop everything at the drop of a hat because P has a brainfart.

How about announcing this when there is AN ACTUAL DATE and AN ACTUAL LOCATION and AN ACTUAL TICKET PRICE?

For fuck's sake, this is Prince, a guy who earlier this year was convicted by court to pay SEVERAL MILLIONS to a promotor because Prince changed his mind about doing a gig in Ireland at the last minute.

This is to Bart (Van Hemelen):

I am deeply worried: lately, I find myself agreeing with you rather often.

So I wonder, should I look for professional advice from a doctor?

Did I become a hater of the internet, or maybe common sense is taking over me?

Some are asking what was the purpose of Prince announcing the concert series if there was no date/locations confirmed. Apparently he held the conference to let folks know he's involved in the Harlem Empowering Zone Project and will be mc'ing/hosting some shows in the near future with live performances. It is apparent the dates/location(s) are still being worked out. He did gave us an idea that it will start sometime in December 2010, so at least he's letting people know about this upcoming event ahead of time.

[Edited 10/15/10 7:24am]

Hey Mr. Miserable. You go on like Prince is suppose to jump, shake and kiss your feet when you snap your fingers and want information. Newsflash....you never had or never will have that power, so don't you think it's time for you to get off that fantasy?

Typing in caps, bringing up his past lawsuits, won't get you any closer to obtaining some privileged pass to that information, you feel you deserve, so you will just have to wait for the info, like the rest of us. If you choose not to, then no one is stopping you from walking away. In the meantime...calm down chill pill or go outside and get some sunshine in your life.

Well, I'm probably in the minority here, but the only artists on that list I care to see are Sheila E. and Prince. I remember one year he toured with Chaka Kahn and Larry Graham. I think Doug E. Fresh came out too. That was the longest ass show. If he brought this act with all these artists on the road, there is no way I would pay for all that.

What's his problem with not doing a regular tour anyway? He hasn't been to Detroit in six years! I guess he forgot about his all his little "motorbabies."

after all ur ranting u still haven't given one suggestion of who YOU would want as a support act and then let's see WHO THE HELL has heard of the people u suggest

I'm with you on the Sheila E. issue.

He could put together such a great lineup and really put on a great show, but his mind is locked in some bizarre place that he refuses to get it out of. I guess it makes sense to no one, but himself.

Janelle Monae, Ezperanza, these are great artists. He obviously cannot tour with big names, because they would overshadow him. The artists also have to do black music. This is about alternative funk/soul.

clapping Agree with your last sentence, except the "black music" part. No, they don't have to play "black music" aka various types of music, commonly associated with black culture, based on society's standards or assumptions, but not limited to" so-to-speak. There is absolutely no limit to what types of music, musicians who happen to be "Black" can play, and Prince, along with many other musicians of African/Black-American descent, have already proven that. So I expect, we will hear various styles of music, from each performer. Remember, all of us don't like the same cake flavor.

whilst a press conference to announce it might seem unnecessary and over the top, its a good way to bring attention to the shows

yes he does live in a bubble, but let him. he's institutionalized now, any world outside his own may be too daunting for him

About the lineup, why does he always include nobodies we don't give a fuck about, why not include The Artist Formerly Known As Terence Trent D'arby, Hall & Oates (they are amazing live), Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Steve Vai, Lee Ritenour, George Benson, Larry Carlton, and comedian Lewis Black (he attacks religion) instead of Sinbad.

He was wearing it since summertime, before he went to the European tour/on the European tour 2010.

There are pics with him and Bria and I think Shelby wearing those glasses.

This is similar to his white one from years back. Where is this picture from?

Yesterday I received an email..Special A list announcement with this picture of Prince from the Apollo Theater. I'm on their mailing list for upcoming shows and events. There's an Apollo Theater in Minneapolis that I've been to and I like being notified for music shows.

The picture in the email looks exactly like this. I didn't see a response to the above question. I tried to copy and paste the email but something prevents me from posting it. I'm not sure why or what I'm doing wrong, but the picture is exactly the same. There were a few details about fans who wanted to come and join the press conference, times, the adress etc.

Subject: TONIGHT - Prince at the Apollo PRINCE AT THE APOLLO THEATER!

will make a rare appearance in New York for a special announcement to the media. He would like to invite his fans from the New York area to join him when he makes the announcement.
Seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis.

WHEN: Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Fan check in begins at 5:00 PM
Press conference begins at 6:00 PM sharp
WHERE: Apollo Theater (253 West 125th Street, Harlem, USA)

Oh ffs with these MJ comparisons! You deluded MJ deciples are so scared of Prince's power of being more talented etc that you try so hard to keep Skeletor on top in your never land mind! Prince has copied no ones look, Prince looks cool, stylish and in glasses billions of people wear. MJ looked like a sick tranny who could barely talk.....who then "rehearsed" a terrible rehash show where he jerked and moved like something from Jacobs Ladder. THERE IS NO COMPARISON. Prince is too talented to be put in the same league.

What silly comment and very disrespectful to Prince and MJ, Please Prince made the same announcement when he came to london in 2007 before selling out 21 Nights !

He bringing 21 Nights type show to NYC that's all but he's added a twist with Special Guest to keep it fresh and current!

Prince is not the New King he's the New Prince -the sex -drugs -rock n roll of the 80's !

I guess the shows gonna be like American Idol with Talent!lol

Well played.

Still, although Michael Jackson "owns" many looks...the most famous being the single/sparkling glove, I don't think that he has sole claim over aviator shades. The same could be said for the style of shirt they are wearing.

If you really think Prince is deliberately copying Michael, no one will be able to convince you otherwise. It's unlikely that Prince saw those, fairly unfamous, pictures of MJ and decided to wear aviators. Millions of people wear them and they were famous/fashionable before Michael Jackson. Now, if Prince starts wearing a civil war cap and a Mickey Mouse shirt...I'll change my mind. smile

Exactly. Aviator frames are in style right now - just as they were in the 70s. They've been around forever - no one "owns" them.

I mean if he did have sex he would break every rule Jehova's have regarding premarital sex so Prince is really just friends with them all anyway.

True, and I wasn't implying that. smile Prince most likely didn't pay attention to MJ's fashion way back then, and those sunglasses didn't become one of Michael's notable trademarks until Thriller. In comparison though, MJ wore aviators consistently over the years, which is why people associate them to him (That's what I meant by Michael "owning" them. Well said.

I know some have gone a bit loopy about it (on both sides), which isn't helpful, but I agree simply that it was a curious choice on Prince's part (and yes, possibly just a coincidence).

And point taken (whoever posted the pics) that Prince has apparently been wearing the aviator sunnies a bit recently, around Europe and whatnot. Maybe he's always liked them, but gave them up when MJ was forever being snapped in them. Maybe he's figured that enough time has passed, that he can wear them again without comparisons being made.

Maybe he was wrong wink

(or maybe the whole topic would have him saying, "What the duck are you fools talking about??" razz)

Because they are the same person. Haven't you been listening to anything the press has said for the last 25 years? Prince killed off his alter ego, "Prince" in 1993 and then his alternate ego, "MJ" sadly passed away. Now all he's finally down to one persona, "Dawn". Hence, the phrase: Welcome 2 the Dawn.

"The next time you look into the mirror,
just look at the way the ears rest next to the head; look at the way the hairline grows;
think of all the little bones in your wrist.
It is a miracle. And the dance is a
celebration of that miracle.” - Marth

Prince's announcement reminds me of this concert series (great cd by the way, the whole collection of JATP is awesome) from the late 40's early 50's.

From Wikipedia:

Jazz at the Philharmonic, or JATP, (1944–1983) was the title of a series of jazz concerts, tours and recordings produced by Norman Granz.

Over the years, Jazz at the Philharmonic featured many of the era's preeminent musicians, including Louie Bellson, Ray Brown, Benny Carter, Buddy DeFranco, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge, Herb Ellis, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Bill Harris, Coleman Hawkins, J.C. Heard, Billie Holiday, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Illinois Jacquet, Hank Jones, Jo Jones, Barney Kessel, Kenny Kersey, Gene Krupa, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Flip Phillips, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers, Willie Smith, Sonny Stitt, Slim Gaillard, Tommy Turk, Ben Webster, Lester Young, Nat "King" Cole, J.J. Johnson, Lee Young, Meade Lux Lewis, Helen Humes, Fats Navarro, Shelly Manne, Sonny Criss, Lou Levy.

WHY IS PRINCE DRESSING LIKE MICHAEL JACKSON? eek

Because they are the same person. Haven't you been listening to anything the press has said for the last 25 years? Prince killed off his alter ego, "Prince" in 1993 and then his alternate ego, "MJ" sadly passed away. Now all he's finally down to one persona, "Dawn". Hence, the phrase: Welcome 2 the Dawn.

lol Hey, I've liked Sinbad since I was little, so I'm just happy to see him working, LOL. I didn't mean to detract any coolness from Esperanza being included, 'cause I'm a fan of hers as well. But I've seen her perform recently. Sinbad hasn't been on a stage doing comedy in a long time, so I'm like "Yay, Sinbad is back." Ha ha.

What the HELL is MJ doing in this thread? Let it GO people. They are just sunglasses. So not a big deal.

I'm glad the video is out cause I was at that damn conference like I wish people could hear what I'm hearing cause I was thoroughly confused.

I personally would prefer Prince to just go out on his own with his own band like he's doing with those overseas dates that were just announced, and either have an Apollo residency or some dates across the US, but I **guess** this is okay. I have nothing again Janelle Monae or Sinbad or any of the other folks he mentioned but I don't really WANNA see them, I wanna see Prince... JUST Prince. I guess he's trying to use his celebrity to get other folks some shine. Great. Fine. Whatever.

The only show I can see myself excited to attend is the one with Mint Condition because I really really like them. Other than that... this is just meh for me.

Wow I am remembering why I faded out from the 'net... this thread is hilarious. Especially touched by an angel are the MJ/Prince posts. HAhahahahaha

These shows/this line up may not be pleasing to some hardcore folks, but there is a huge market in NYC for this showcasing of some of the best of the black musical tradition (yes I said black music and I don't feel the need to define it).

So those who don't want to go, please, stay home. But you won't be causing Prince, LiveNation, or their bank accounts any harm. These shows stand to sell quite well, if priced well.

You guys can say what you want about his sunglasses being the same as MJ's but it's really the whole look. When I first saw that picture of Prince, the first thing I thought was - damn he dressed the same as MJ did at his last press conference.

Prince and Michael Jackson

Say what you will but there is a similarity, and it's kinda weird.

Prince spent most of his career playing all types of music will artists of all races. He's moved away from that so naturally, many fans won't follow him. Most people who like Purple Rain won't like 20Ten.

Ok.

I'm glad he's an ambassador of sorts, and...it fills his ego somewhat.

But the last few highlights of shows I've watched online have sucked...he's gotta kill that band, or just go stright into the studio and never come back, there's no passion.

I figured his music would get better with time.

Straight talk...he's resting on his laurels, at least right now.

Inscrutability times ten, our boy is.

Laugh all you want. Prince hasn't been a major player in the music industry in almost two decades. When he makes a rare appearance somewhere like on the Superbowl, only the hits really fly with the audience. How many average music listeners who love Prince's older catalogue are demanding to hear more of his new material? His new music sucks and everyone but the "fams" know it.

So flip this all you want on me. I'm living in reality. And in the real world, Prince's music makes sense to no one, but himself..... and a few of his drones.

And in the real world, Prince's music makes sense to no one, but himself..... and a few of his drones.

and ur living in the reality of the 'void? as in AVOIDING what a simple question asks of u? and it's not a matter of what his music is like now, totally missing the point. If u had EVER paid attention 2 his fans on here when they talk about his tours like say ..hmmmm ONA ...how many fans loved those shows compared to ....20ten? do the math i dare ya.

how many diehards are SICK of him doing the hits? care 2 gander a guess?

so mr stick in the mud ..i'm still waiting 4 your answers which u will never say cause only punks avoid the truth

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Why would I answer such a loaded question? No matter how I respond, you'll just follow it up with a smart-ass comment.

Huge concert tours aren't for die-hards. They're for the greater audiences. He's smart enough to at least understand that. You may be tired of Little Red Corvette, but the rest REALLY don't wanna hear No More Candy 4 U.

Well they don't. Not everyone needs to like what you like. Most people either hate his new music or don't even know he's made new music since the early 90's.

My thoughts too bob, i could not give a fuck about how he looked like MJ or any of the other bile being typed here, i just want to know the dates.

moquake.com are now saying that the gigs are going to take place at Madison Square Gardens and the IZOD center in New Jersey, not at The Apollo as first thought. I don't know what their source is for that info but it makes more sense, The Apollo only holds 1500 odd, but still no dates yet.

Anybody can wear them glasses and he ain't even trying to replace no Wacko Jacko. Need I remind you it was MJ that wanted to beat Prince's record with the 21 shows in London, but failed to. So what he sold out 50 shows if it as 50 in a short span of time, but he didn't get to do NOT 1 SHOW!

Prince is blessed. He's still here.

Well they don't. Not everyone needs to like what you like. Most people either hate his new music or don't even know he's made new music since the early 90's.

and this can be said about any major artist of the 80's despite the fact that they still make new music, the media or even the record companies don't push the new product, it doesn't mean the new music actually sucks. how much acclaim did the recent works of bob dylan, bruce springsteen get yet no one knows about them really? is that the fault of the artist or the media? think about it. and in regards 2 prince, sometimes he's the reason no one knows about it, but lotusflow3r debuted at #2 when it was released. and even tho i may not like 20ten, his fans on this site do so they should have the opportunity 2 listen 2 these songs LIVE. If they don't like it, then they can do like I do when he does purple rain 4 the 20thousandth time and go 2 the bathroom

Co-Sign- I wish some orgers had the balls to admit it. You do not like RnB music and you do not want P to be around black artist because you cannot and will not except that RnB is his foundation and unlike a lot of RnB acts who crossed over to pop he never kicked RnB to the curb.

Get over it already.

Absolutlely Laura. Those who choose not to attend because they don't like the names of the artists mentioned, I'd like to thank them ahead of time, for not planning on attend, as there will be much more room for those of us, who will be there to support these artists and have a wonderful time.biggrin

I Agree totally with these statements..........

By the way. Prince has a right to invite whoever he wants to perform with on his tours. Sinbad in particular invited Prince on his show Vibe years ago. Which is one if not my absolute favorite live Prince performances on national TV. It mixed the still dirty Prince with the new spiritual Prince we see now......I was at that taping but sadly didn't get in.......

Have any of you seen Prince play w/others before? He JAMS with others. How about the ONA AfterParty when he brought out artist after artist...George Clinton, Alicia Keys, Qwest?love... How about when he jamed at the R&R HOF with Tom Petty & 4 other Guitarist... How about when he played with Chaka & Larry in NYC that night at the Palladium... and jamed with Steive Wonder at MSG during one of Stevie's shows...

yeah well lets hope prince isnt found dead in his hotel room cuz some negligent imbecilic yes-person mixed the wrong painkillers.

apparently they cant even pay his bills on time. imagine how irresponsible they'd be with his medicine cabinet.

sorry but i have a really strong intolerance for the parasitic types that boost their self esteem by working for these cats and they do anything to keep their job and 'profile'.

anyone who thinks this level of superstar is fully responsible for his own demise better think again.

maybe prince needs to decide which he'd prefer more: getting his proverbial cock sucked, or a long healthy life.

MJ was fully responsible for his own demise. He didn't have to let success take control of him the way he did. He should'nt have let Thriller think he was so bigger than God that it took him all the way down. As as for Prince not paying his bills. Yes we all should pay our bills, but Prince's debt wasn't all in the news. Matter of fact he isn't all in the news with scandal at all. Tommorow is not promised to any of us, but Prince and Michael Jackson have never been in the same category even though people have been trying to put them there for years.

Prince does EVERYTHING ON PURPOSE, we have known him for years, he is well known for being a control freak, u think he didn't see MJ's press conference (that's the only way Prince didn't emulate MJ's clothes on purpose, only if Prince never saw MJ's press conference).

Not only that, but Prince probably had that jacket custom made, to resemble (he didn't want an exact copy) MJ's jacket.

Prince wanted to be compared with MJ this time. He did it to attract MJ fans, knowing MJ fans will inmediately recognize the similarity in the clothes. Another reason, Prince has a sense of humor, he's like making a parody, i don't mean mock. Of course i think there is no comparison, Prince has always been superior.

This is like the time, right after the Superbowl performance, the controversy caused by Prince's phallic shadow, u think Prince didn't know his shadow would look like he had huge hard on, u think he didn't rehearse the whole thing, to see how it would look? That was no "shadow malfunction", WTF! Are people that fucking naive? Prince always had EVERYTHING under control. The time when in 1983 (James Brown birthday) Prince got on the same stage that MJ had been, Prince fell off the stage, only that time, MAYBE that falling off the stage wasn't on purpose.

Exactly.

I think your scenario is close to how it goes down with him and his YES-PEOPLE. Unfortunately Prince didn't have a lady like me with him to fix his turtleneck before he took the podium. Then again, he could have done it intentionally to make sure we didn't miss the similar design on chest. I doubt he was making out with anyone in his dressing room. Maybe someone hugged him and messed it up? Maybe he had an itch and needed to scratch? Who knows? I pray he still has the brain cells needed to protect his neck.

Prince and Michael Jackson

Say what you will but there is a similarity, and it's kinda weird.

[Edited 10/17/10 0:42am]

The outfit looks like one of Prince's jokes. I think he's making fun of all the Michael Jackson comparisons. Prince does things like that for a laugh, to shock, and create some controversy. He's a prankster.

He's been doing that kind of thing for decades. On the VIBE show hosted by Sinbad on June 13, 1998 Prince talked with a high Michael Jackson voice for a moment saying "I don't like to talk because my voice is so high," before talking in his own deep voice.

He has a sense of humor. I remember the GQ Awards on Halloween October 31, 1998 when Prince wore a fake beard, looking and acted like Grady Wilson on Sanford and Son.

In Dave Hill's book Prince: A Pop Life Andre Cymone's mom remembered going to Prince's early gigs and watching Prince confuse fans after the gig: "All the kids were running looking for Prince. Prince was sitting downstairs in the hotel saying 'No, no, Prince ain't down yet,' Andre would show up and they'd all run to Andre saying "Prince! Prince!'"

"He's got a great sense of humor," said Dez Dickerson, "He'd do things just to totally put people off. Someone would put out their right hand to shake his hand right-handed and Prince would put out his left hand to force you to switch hands and shake left-handed."

In Per Nelson's book Dance Music Sex Romance record engineer David Rivkin remembered a prank Prince played on record producer Tommy Vicari. "Tommy Vicari was out late one night and Prince took some of (manager) Owen Husney's clothes and stuffed them with leaves. He put a knife in the back and put him face down on the bed." Rivkin remembered "Vicari came back at 4 in the morning and though Owen had been murdered. He was really screaming. I don't think he ever forgave Prince.

Another time, Prince had a squart gun which we took to a fancy restaurant in Sausalito. We took turns shooting up in the air. People three tables away were looking up at the ceiling to see if something was leaking. We tried not to laugh."

"Prince played a practical joke on Chaka Khan," Husney remembered. "She had called the studio looking for Sly Stone, and Prince pretended to be Sly over the phone and tricked her into coming down to the studio. She was pissed at Prince and called him every name in the book but she stayed for a while and listened to him play."

In one recurring joke at airports before he was recognisably famous, Prince would tell the band to grab the first wheelchair they saw and put him in it. Prince put on a pair of dark sunglasses and sat in the chair with a blank look on his face looking nearly comatose. The band would walk away into the background making it seem like an invalid had been left at the airport. Prince slumped forward in his chair and drooled, which immediately attracted a shocked crowd. At that point the band would pretend to come to his assistance.

In Dave Hill's book Prince: A Pop Life Brown Mark remembered "Prince left me behind once [on the Controversy tour] when I was a minute late for the bus. I came down the steps with all my bags and everything, and all the fans down there. One of them said 'Yo, man, I think they left you. They forgot you were here... ' Eventually the bus returned. When I got on I was pretty pissed off. They were all on there laughing. I said, 'I don't see nothing funny.' I went to Prince about it, and he said, 'You shouldn't have been late.'"

On the America Music Awards on January 30, 1995 Prince pulled a prank on Quincy Jones when he stood on stage next to Quincy Jones at the 10th anniversary performance of "We Are the World" and Prince sucked on a tootsie pop and did not sing. Quincy Jones held his microphone to Prince's mouth to sing and Prince responded by holding his tootsie pop up to Quincy Jones, but when Quincy went for it, Prince quickly pulled it back. Quincy Jones was quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times as saying to Prince afterwards that "as far as I'm concerned you're still a prick."

On the Tonight Show Jay Leno explained a phone prank Prince had played on him pretending to be "Joe the carpenter." Prince admitted to loving to joke. Of course not everyone thinks his sense of humor is funny.

Hmmm...yup...he's coming 2 NY!!!

What would my GREAT Uncle Fred say?

exactly. moronic yes-people are so accustomed to saying yes, they dont know when to say no.

its a doctors job to make sure their 'patient' is not endangering themselves.

but an imbecilic yes-person doesnt consider this when they are so focussed on all the money they are making and want to hold on to their 'position'. thats why the guy is up for manslaughter, dude.

a while back there was a rumor that prince was taking painkillers for his hip. i dont know if it is true.

did anyone around him sit the punk down and slap some sense into him? at the risk of losing their job? did anyone have the ethics required to do what is right ?

you want prince addicted to painkillers? i'm not saying its a true rumor, but i think ur missing the point on what goes down behind the closed doors in these mansions of fame.

[Edited 10/20/10 21:17pm]

Those practical jokes Prince plays on people are actually just mean and nasty. That doen't show a sense of humor, it shows a real mean streak from someone that obviously doesn't seem to care about anyone but himself. Laughing at someones misfortune that was directly caused by you is just plain nasty.

And as for the MJ thing...get over it people. Prince looks like he always does. He just happens to be wearing something that is slightly similar to something MJ wore 2 years ago. Probably by the same designer. It's not a backward message or anything. Life is not as mysterious

This is what's up, you want to see Prince here in NYC, come and see him. If you don't, great don't see him. In fact, I hope all of you who are bitching don't even try to get a ticket because I need all the tickets I can get my hands on so I can go to every show he's doing around here! God knows I don't want to sit/stand next to someone who thinks he hasn't done anything good in 15 years. I'm glad he's coming back to the city that he belongs in, NYC. Hey Cam! Good to see you here! I agree with your articulation. I am rarely here anymore due to all the negativity. But I am really glad Prince is doing some gigs in the US, and I live far away from NY, but will still attempt to make it to one. Hopefully he will venture out into the states a little further (Obviously we still do not know anything definite) but I hope to go jam! smile

I agree that his jokes are evil. They confirm his mean and nasty side. Too bad no one ever taught him a lesson. I know there's a very good reason he's not a father. I honestly think he would have been a horrible father. He acts too mean, spiteful, and insecure. As far as his outfit, it is reminiscent of MJ's last press conference in my opinion and I think he did it intentionally but like most of his mysterious actions it's not important. It's just Prince being silly little Prince.

lol Can you imagine? That's right in the heart of the Xmas season. Traffic in NYC just trying to get over to Jersey on a regular day is hectic enough. I can see the gridlock now. Most people get off work at either 4:30pm or 5pm, and the concert will probably start at 8pm. Taking the train into Jersey would be their best bet.

I prefer the MSG shows. It's so much easier to get to from where I am. Plus who wouldn't want to be at the last shows.woot! I actually thought he would have had the shows in NYC (Manhattan) first, but the garden seems to be tied up with quite a few events that month.

I wish things were a little more clear about who's gonna be performing with him on which dates. I don't wanna miss out, but then again I wanna know WHO's gonna be where before I shell out my money.

Whatever you're responsible for yourself, all the blame doesn't go on the other person. yes man people are to blame but if you can't handle fame then it shouldn't happen for you.

our conversation got me to thinking. imo, its not fame thats the problem, its the lack of psychological care an artist SHOULD receive when entering the public eye on mass scale.

record companies should provide it, management should provide it, someone, anyone should provide the appropriate psychological care to an artist who 1. does not know what they are getting themselves into 2. experiences a sudden jolt of fame en masse 3. has a propensity to let things go to their head

there's so many other reasons, i think EVERY artist should receive this care no matter what.

seriously, what a negligent industry, thrusting people full force into the global spotlight with not one single ounce of consideration to what it will do to them mentally.

sure, the artist is responsible as well, but look at everything else they are responsible for. they cant do everything and manage their mental health at the same time. that stuff has has to be organized and scheduled in, at the very least once a week.

look at this shot of prince at the purple rain premier:

did anyone have a word with him on how to cope with what he was going through? and not just some peer or loose-lipped associate, but someone professional?

the lure of fame is so lovely isnt it? wow you get all that money and all that attention and everyone loves you, but the trade-off is you become a total headcase because suddenly you cant tell the difference between reality and fantasy anymore.

michael had this happen to him when he was near 9 years old! what care did he receive? bunch of yes-people feeding into it? you can see how direct a role these yes-people play in the mental health of an artist, especially when that artist is not receiving the proper psychological care.

and 30 years later these guys are totally institutionalized and its THEIR fault if something bad happens to them? i dont think so.

my apologies if my views are coming across a little strong, and ive no intent to jack this thread, just wanted to share my thoughts on this, considering the angle of our conversation.

this too shall pass

Yes it seems they did jump the gun early. On top of that, they had ticket sales for the NJ shows and the 12/18 MSG NY show, showing for the same date and time. Oh well, this is what happens when there's no official site to give "official" info on this.shrug

Honestbabe

Prince is the one who jumped the gun but he has a good reason. He knows he can get away with holding a press conference, making a big announcement about a show that will happen on a purple day in December, and still have his fans scrambling for more info since he really didn't give the important details.. If you and me were throwing a party and we invited our friends yet told them the party was going to be on a red day in March, you know they would think we were full of it. So, I can't help thinking Prince is full of it even though I do think Robinhood presented a good hypothesis as to why Prince is so full of it.

Being an old school Prince fan from day 1, I still prefer my Prince unfiltered, undiluted, uncontaminated and 100% Prince. No knock on the other artists - I am fans of most of them. I have all of Wilson's, Monet's and Sheila E's albums and would go to see them live. And I don't mind seeing them sit in with Prince or vice versa for a song. I don't want to see an extended jam with a gang of other artists and Prince - I want as much Prince as I can get each time I see him.

I was at Xenophobia and that may have been the only time I didnt mind it so much (though I got tired of the overrated Musiq Soulchild and Rachelle Ferelle ) and that was probably because Prince took over for a couple hours alone every night of the week and it was a different set every night. And who doesn't recall the frustration of having to endure Tamar to get some Prince during that small theatre and club tour afew years ago?

Call me a purist but there is no live musical force greater than Prince Roger Nelson centerstage with the the NPG behind him - alone.

i also was at xenophobia and thank god 4 the opening acts cause i became a fan of victor wooten because of it. rachelle ferell TORE IT UP!!, Benard Allison provided a energetic set and norah jones provided all of us a chance 2 sit down and recouperate while her set was going on. what some don't understand or remember is, concerts normally have what they call OPENING ACTS or SUPPORT ACTS that allow the headliner to do their thing as well.

hmmm wasn't prince a OPENING act once upon a time in his career? if no one wants 2 see any of the opening acts then show up late 2 the show..but chances are u will never know when prince would come on stage now would u? There are so many acts i have gotten into because prince introduced their music 2 me and i'm glad that he did that. i may not like janelle monroe but others on this site seem 2 like her music and style, they are fans of mint conditon (i am one), cassandra wilson, and seriously who can turn down seeing sheila e?

so just relax u might discover new music that can last u a lifetime via a prince concert

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
