I love the speculation Prince created. Only to give little info. But it still reminisces MJ's O2 Arena announcement over a year ago. With the same little info given. Similar wardrobe and similar glasses....Prince is giving a strong message that he is the new King now.........

[Edited 10/14/10 20:08pm]

What silly comment and very disrespectful to Prince and MJ, Please Prince made the same announcement when he came to london in 2007 before selling out 21 Nights !

He bringing 21 Nights type show to NYC that's all but he's added a twist with Special Guest to keep it fresh and current!

Prince is not the New King he's the New Prince -the sex -drugs -rock n roll of the 80's !

I guess the shows gonna be like American Idol with Talent!lol

It really doesn't even matter who wore them first. Michael "owned" those sunglasses. lol That's why several people in this thread and the other one have wondered why Prince decided to wear "MJ's glasses" in the first place, lol. Plus, of all the millions of clothes and shades Prince could have chosen from, he didn't have to pick an outfit that similar to what MJ wore last year anyway.

Well played.

Still, although Michael Jackson "owns" many looks...the most famous being the single/sparkling glove, I don't think that he has sole claim over aviator shades. The same could be said for the style of shirt they are wearing.

If you really think Prince is deliberately copying Michael, no one will be able to convince you otherwise. It's unlikely that Prince saw those, fairly unfamous, pictures of MJ and decided to wear aviators. Millions of people wear them and they were famous/fashionable before Michael Jackson. Now, if Prince starts wearing a civil war cap and a Mickey Mouse shirt...I'll change my mind. smile

In reality, it's a tired old subject best left in 198whatever.

5 Things That Scream Out In This Thread...

1. Prince is still a cryptic bastard.....

2. Given the rumors that the concert series will be at Harlem's Apollo (makes sense when you factor in that Prince will be doing some charity for the Harlem Children Zone), folks complaining that there's not enough time to make plans to attend the gigs are missing the point...Trust me people...Just from living here for well over a decade, I can tell you that a) New Yorkers do shit at the spur of the moment...and b) There are enough tourists in NYC on any given night to fill up the Apollo...

3. There's a deep hatred for Sinbad...lol...While I don't hate the guy, I do think he's severely played out...But I did like him in that crazy ass episode of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia....

4. There are some Orgers who clearly have no use for what most people would label as "black music"...I even hear some people shitting on Janelle Monae of all folks....I'm sure she's a had a few bad shows in her lifetime (hi Bart), but I can testify just from covering her shows a few times, that Monae is a kick ass live performer...and that's whether she's doing James Brown splits as one person dismisses or going all eccentric new wave (To whom it may concern...black folks can actually channel their inner James Brown and Laurie Anderson....We are more than just our "blackness")...

5. I've hung around David Bowie fans; Michael Jackson fans; Bruce Springsteen fans, Radiohead fans, Nas fans, Madonna fans, U2 fans; Outkast fans, ect...And I can say without a shadow of a doubt that a lot of the more hardcore Prince fans are the most miserable sacks I have ever encountered...Yikes...

Exactly. Aviator frames are in style right now - just as they were in the 70s. They've been around forever - no one "owns" them.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

LOL....that is funny u said that cuz yesterday i was picking up my friend and wathcing this on my iphone.....i hit replay and let him watch and he said "is this Michael Jackson?" its was'nt until he saw that poster in the backgraound that said "'Prince" that he relized who it was.

W2A......"its what we ALL have been waiting for". Well, off the bat, Larry GraHAM/Central is not on my list of must-see acts ---- my x-mas wish is that a live CD/DVD if the show finds it was to the light.

Calling all this event to air a new song and announce a tour without set dates. This guy is something special. Its sad because its long gone when this weirdness served him in any way. Event the articles already describe him as unreliable and keep a slight touch of mock. I wander who's his advisors are ...

Having said that, I know I am a fool. After swearing not to do it again, after the Geneve cancellation and all, I am off to Rome again. Crossing my heart he will feel like taking the stage and giving a show that night.

True, and I wasn't implying that. smile Prince most likely didn't pay attention to MJ's fashion way back then, and those sunglasses didn't become one of Michael's notable trademarks until Thriller. In comparison though, MJ wore aviators consistently over the years, which is why people associate them to him (That's what I meant by Michael "owning" them. He owns aviators, among other things, like Prince owns purple). Prince was last seen wearing those shades in, what, 1981, maybe '82, lol? So I just find his outfit from Thursday to be a strange selection. shrug Even random commenters at entertainment blogs where this news was posted said the same thing: "Why is he dressed like Michael Jackson during his This Is It announcement?"

I really wish they weren't being compared at all regarding this conference, but Prince brought this on himself this time.

Well said.

I know some have gone a bit loopy about it (on both sides), which isn't helpful, but I agree simply that it was a curious choice on Prince's part (and yes, possibly just a coincidence).

And point taken (whoever posted the pics) that Prince has apparently been wearing the aviator sunnies a bit recently, around Europe and whatnot. Maybe he's always liked them, but gave them up when MJ was forever being snapped in them. Maybe he's figured that enough time has passed, that he can wear them again without comparisons being made.

Maybe he was wrong wink

(or maybe the whole topic would have him saying, "What the duck are you fools talking about??" razz)

Because they are the same person. Haven't you been listening to anything the press has said for the last 25 years? Prince killed off his alter ego, "Prince" in 1993 and then his alternate ego, "MJ" sadly passed away. Now all he's finally down to one persona, "Dawn". Hence, the phrase: Welcome 2 the Dawn.

Most people on this board do not know that Sinbad hosted those big funk shows in Aruba back in the 90s. I can see him fitting in as a host for these shows. Plus I am sure he could use the work so maybe P is just helping him out.

Co-Sign- I wish some orgers had the balls to admit it. You do not like RnB music and you do not want P to be around black artist because you cannot and will not except that RnB is his foundation and unlike a lot of RnB acts who crossed over to pop he never kicked RnB to the curb.

Prince's announcement reminds me of this concert series (great cd by the way, the whole collection of JATP is awesome) from the late 40's early 50's.

From Wikipedia:

Jazz at the Philharmonic, or JATP, (1944–1983) was the title of a series of jazz concerts, tours and recordings produced by Norman Granz.

Over the years, Jazz at the Philharmonic featured many of the era's preeminent musicians, including Louie Bellson, Ray Brown, Benny Carter, Buddy DeFranco, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge, Herb Ellis, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Bill Harris, Coleman Hawkins, J.C. Heard, Billie Holiday, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Illinois Jacquet, Hank Jones, Jo Jones, Barney Kessel, Kenny Kersey, Gene Krupa, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Flip Phillips, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers, Willie Smith, Sonny Stitt, Slim Gaillard, Tommy Turk, Ben Webster, Lester Young, Nat "King" Cole, J.J. Johnson, Lee Young, Meade Lux Lewis, Helen Humes, Fats Navarro, Shelly Manne, Sonny Criss, Lou Levy.

But I've seen her perform recently. Sinbad hasn't been on a stage doing comedy in a long time, so I'm like "Yay, Sinbad is back." Ha ha.

I don't get that at all, lol. He's the most interesting part of this whole thing. lol

Most people on this board do not know that Sinbad hosted those big funk shows in Aruba back in the 90s. I can see him fitting in as a host for these shows. Plus I am sure he could use the work so maybe P is just helping him out.

Yep. nod That's what I said in the other thread.

rap

Without trying to inflame the situation any further, weren't Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson both discovered (backstage) at the Apollo? By Quincy Jones?
