Completely bored with Prince

I have been a fan since the late 70's, but I just think Prince has become completely boring and irrelevant. I have been to all the great concerts: 1999,Purple Rain, UTCM(birthday show in Detroit) LoveSexy, and the list goes on. However, after listening to Sheila E. perform a song he apparently gave to her, it's just more of the same bland, boring music, and I don’t believe he has anything left beyond this style of music. I still purchase what he puts out-hoping each time for something great, but I am consistently disappointed. There might be one or two that I enjoy, but that's just not enough. At this point, I wish he would retire then continue to disappoint us.

Perhaps it's time you do as you say and stop listening to him. So you're saying Prince should stop making music because it's boring to 'you'. That's what you're saying, right?

Right ... No More Candy 4 U ... Time to stop being a fan, that's what time it is. (Not being mean or baiting or flaming you). It's time 'you' stop buying the albums, with all due respect.

I on the other hand, have a ton of unreleased music/concerts that I'm happy with. Listening to a 20 min. version of Noon Rendezvous right now, brilliant, just brilliant ...

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

And you are telling us this because....................................................?

Is it because you think we care?

Or is it because you are one of the deluded few who think that Prince would waste his time reading this stuff?

Hold the front page!!! I'm bored with his current music too, quite a lot of us are, but most of us (apart from a few forum drama queens) just get on with it and listen to other Prince eras or other music, not posting the fact that we are bored in the hope that it's going to change anything.

You should be enjoying the Prince music that you do like and enjoying the memories of the great experiences you have had. You sound like you have had great times with your being a Prince fan.

Focus on that and stop bloody moaning.

Valid point. But, I don't think I am the only fan that feels this way, and that's the problem-I am true fan at heart. However, it's just been more of the same with his recent efforts. I do like a few cuts off of 20Ten, but I treasue all the old stuff and it's what I go to mostly when I want to listen to Prince.

My suggestion is....take a break, listen to other artists for awhile.Listen to the old Prince recordings that still excite you. It's important to realize that artists we love aren't gonna thrill us everytime, especially when they've been around as long as Prince has. There's no need for Prince to retire. If you don't dig the new stuff, that's fine.Step aside for awhile and come back when he does something that you like.

Understood but, I would hope you are not holding to another person's point of view and taking that as your own (regarding Prince and his music). If that's the case I would still call him a fag (no disrespect to anyone) and that he's weird. I know my man is 'off center' but, that's as much as I'll say personally about him because I do not know him, even though he gave me a moment of his time back during the 3121 Vegas Shows. I also consider myself a true fan, at heart to use your term loosely.

I missed the entire Dirty Mind, Purple Rain and S.O.T.T. experience. I had to relive that vicariously thru members of prince.org and Housequake.com descriptions of that time period. I became a fan when he took SLaVE off his face.

As I have said before, I know and love my compulsive obsession for P's music, not necessarily all the lyrics but, his music, most of the times, have impressed me. I also now understand how some enthusiast of his music say the first 10 or perhaps 20yrs of his music was the best and I can agree with that up to a point. I love the whole entire experience and I believe if you leave part of it out, you are missing that experience but, then again who am I to tell anyone what to do. I can only answer for myself what I like and do not like ...

No disrespect but these kinds of threads are becoming ridiculous and one to many.....It seems like an artist needs to die before they are appreciated for what they have contributed to music...It doesn't matter if u think his current material is weak..everyone has their peak...Yes his was in the 80's but that doesn't make him any less of a genius...he has been making music for 30 years +....his genius outputs from the 80's are still fresh today and will always be. He will always be known as a kick-ass performer....Very few can touch him there...Can we try to appreciate him and stop complaining so damn much....After we are all dead and gone, a new generation is gonna learn about him and wish they could have been alive to experience him...We are blessed and lucky to be alive in his era. If u think he sucks that bad and you are wondering why your still a fan....you are free to move along..I'm sure no one has a gun to your head forcing you to be a prince fan.

I'm just saying...

Listen, Prince at his peak was so ahead of his time. He did incredible things that nobody has heard before him, that's what makes him so great. He truly is a musical genius and is gifted.

But just like anybody else who was ahead of their time, time catches up with them. Prince is no different. Accept that and move on.. don't complain. Love and appreciate the music he has given us, I am not really a fan of the current stuff either. That doesn't make him any less great.

Gosh, people can be so demanding. He's just one human being!! eyepop

This turned into something that I did not intend it to.

I am not complaining, nor do I expect him to be the Prince of the 70's. 80's or 90's. What I was giving was my opinion. That's it.

I know how brilliant Prince is. and I don't see in my post where I was demanding that he be what he once was. After watching the video of Sheila E. today, performing a new song he gave her, I thought that it was just more of the same that we have been hearing. In my opinion, it is watered down music, and in my opinion, all the recent stuff sounds the same or similiar to the last few releases. Knowing full well how great he can be, I am sorry, but I have felt disappointed-that's all. I do appreciate Prince, and I don't need him to be dead to do that( as someone else mentioned.) I personally, would rather see him go out on a high note rather than leave a legacy of not so great recent music behind, like so many other aging artists do. It's because I have been a fan for so long that I feel this way. And like I said, I still buy with high hopes, but just speaking for myself people, I feel that his new music doesn't deliver.

Nothing personal. If you knew me, you'd know what Prince meant to me and like many of us, his music is the soundtrack of so much of my life.

Have a break from P`s music!!!

I did just that in the 90`s...I didn`t like D&P and symbol so I stopped buying the following albums but was keeping an eye on Prince...then came along The rainbow children and my passion for him came back! I, since bought the 90`s stuff and even if it`s not my favorite period, I think it`s OK smile

Please keep in mind that there are very defensive individuals on prince.org who will defend Prince until their dying breath and then there are some individuals (members) who will not. Your question was valid but, I do not think you were ready for a lot of what 'they' had to say ... LoL

Keep the faith and to use a Brett Hart Term:

Prince is the Best there 'is' the best there 'was' and the best there will ever be ...

& that's subjective within itself too (not everyone will feel the same way about my (that) statement) ...

That is not vicious. That was merely a statement of how people deal with their favourite artists. I think the problem here is that because he was (and kinda is) so amazing people feel he could also break the last boundary of music-consistent renewal. It is like expecting eternal life. I do not get over excited by Prince now either but I can't relate to the term "Boring". I absolutely ( And I do not believe I am obsessive (Tho propbaly have been)) feel that it has been a gift to be around to see this person perform. I actual feel arrogant and proud that I have supported this artist since I was 11/12 yrs old and feel justifiably smug that I was right. There are very few things in life you can feel so confident about

I sympathise Michigangirl78 - especially with all the playground replies you've received. U probably share the same frustration as myself - he still is a fantastic musician as proved in his live performances but it's very rare these days that you hear one of his new tunes that make you go "WOW - gotta listen to that again" because you know he's got it in him to make you go "WOW". In the last 10 years the only tunes that have made me feel that way are "3121", "PFunk" & "$". Still love the funky little fella though!
