Time to put all the "what happened to Prince" talk to bed

First, -- yes, this is a prince fan community site - and it has forums to allow us all to express our opinions on Prince music. Accordingly, we should be open to, and respect, everyone's opinion - because this is probably the only place for us hardcore prince fans to share them, afterall.

But - let me offer my opinion now - in response to all the "Prince is lame now," (which I have often penned or responded too) and "Prince is and always will be a genius" threads:

Let's take it back to the MUSIC - and I mean the individual songs. Let's stop lamenting the prince-of-old-apocoplypse also known as Larry Graham, let's stop missing the cuss words, let's stop cringing when he preaches to us at concerts or when we read about him going door-to-door in MPLS.

Instead, let's rejoice that we (or most of us) have a catalougue that includes thousands of Prince songs - released and unreleased. We have remixes, we have live versions, we have alternate versions, we have outtakes, we have demos! Let's be happy that -- he put out nearly a dozen albums, many of which were masterpieces, in the 80's that all sounded unique and different from each other. Let's be glad that, after all those albums in the 80's, we have our favorite artist writing a ballet (kamasutra), doing an acoustic album (the truth), releasing a jazz-funk album (NEWS), all after making funky raw trax like Exodus and Funky Design -- let's celebrate that we have an artist who put out two totally different sounding albums -- Chaos & Disorder and Emancipation in the same YEAR! Then, only a year later we get a 3-CD set of totally unreleased songs (Crystal Ball) - and that's all before the 2000's - where we get two live DVD's, some great albums online (Chocolate Invasion, Slaughterhouse), and we're still getting some decent trax out of the guy!

What other artist can offer all that - we should take stock of all the treats we've gotten over the years. I remember getting my Black Album bootleg w/ "Wonderful Ass" on it - then getting "Platinum" w/ Days of Wild -- and that was all unreleased and obtaiened before GOLD --

I could go on and on....but hopefully y'all get my point! We gotta lot to talk about - whether Prince lost it or not doesn't need to be on of them -- if we can get off that topic and back to the actual music, maybe the boredom will subside.

smile Amen! All of the above sounds right on point. I cringe when i see threads like, PRINCE HAS LOST IT or Prince should retire ..etc. The reality is the fans have lost it. Prince is the same person he has always been minus the cuss words, (which is not a bad thing at all). We should be happy that Prince is still with us Happy & Healthy.

Peace.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

The problem is the artist IS the music! So what the artist says and does, unless they are just doing what their managers and all that say, then they matter. So Prince of NOW sadly is missing the mark, even for die hard fans.

You are correct that we should be happy about the music of before, but from what i can tell, we already ARE, but for ones who grew up listening, seeing him become this overbearing kinda boring guy, it's sad! I know some say that now that he isn't super sexual, he "embodies", sorry but that's a crock. I loved how crazy sexy he was, how he did his own thing, it was appreciated.

eye kisses prince

So you basically go from saying let's all respect everyone's opinion and right to express themselves, to let's not share those opinions because you're tired of hearing them, and instead just rejoice in the music. Ok, I left a few bits out but that's essentially what you're saying.

Honestly, this place is nothing without the diversity of threads created. We need the "Prince is lame" threads, they are just as valid as any other. Besides, some of those threads are hilarious.

Yes, it absolutely does - as long as there are people who feel that Prince is lame/lost it and feel the need to express that opinion they should continue to do so, with great enthusiasm.

if we can get off that topic
we can't

and back to the actual music,
we never left the music, we discuss that too, at great length

maybe the boredom will subside.
Boredom? Are you bored? Or surely you're not suggesting that those who create "Prince is lame/has lost it" threads do so simply out of boredom?

Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Thank Jehovah that Prince is appealing to a "different" crowd "fan lovers of Prince" and not the fan haters of Prince, specifically all you haters. That's exactly why he will not be touring 20Ten in the U.S.

You don't know why he is not touring USA. I can speculate from a business sense: No album here. Perhaps he could not get distribution or he just decided to stay out of recession ridden USA. Which I could understand. Build new markets and avoid ones with potential problems. He does not want to come across as being desperate. Performing at places half filled makes him look bad and less viable. This has nothing to do with anything else. Prince as an artist is a business man selling product whether you choose to be live in that or blame it on an Act of God.

Yes - I said to respect everyone's opinion - which I have done. My opinion is simply to say we should get off the "prince is lame" threads -- Me expressing my opinion isn't disrespecting their opinion. It's not a zero-sum game we're playing here

And yes, I surely am suggesting that those who create "prince is lame" threads are doing so, at least in part, out of boredom. Which is fine (because frankly I'm a bit bored) - I am just suggesting a refocus on other things.

Diversity of threads is great and I'm obviously not generalizing that there is NO discussion of music going on "at great length." So don't read more into what I said than what I said.

Wrong. He can make more money outside the US.

I absolutely agree with you and the thread starter! Especially: "We should be happy that Prince is still with us Happy & Healthy." - I am so glad that I am not in the situation of all the MJ fans! One of my friends is a big fan of Michael Jackson, and she now feels even more sad when I am so happy about Prince touring in Europe! Personally, I cherish Prince and his music and am thankful for all that he is sharing with us.

The problem is, a lot of people (not including me) feel like P's music just doesn't resonate with them as it used to. It's like how 20Ten came out over-seas and that's cool with me because I have a copy of everything that was released so it doesn't bother me but, until P tours the U.S some of the orgers in the U.S will feel flat. I know it's not good to speak for someone else but, that's the 'vibe' I get from some orgers posts.

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

It is amazing to me that there a so many fans that go through this Love/Hate turmoil relationship when it comes to Prince. Despite how many fans either dislike where he is in his life right now or where his musik is right now there is no way possible not to look at the phenom that he has become.

Many of us have watched this Artist's total life unfold and yet there are those who can not truly see what he has really sacrificed to get where he is. His fans need to be thankful for his contributions to the art of musik. We should appreciate the fact we have been able to witness the evolution of his brillance. He has actually revolutionized the way we not only listen to musik but also how we think about things that effect us...sex, musik, spirituality etc.

Most of us have watched Prince's life unfold through his musik for 35 years and yet he has managed to collect more fans. We have watched the evolution of a musikal genius. We have seen his highs, lows and all there was in between. All along his journey he always done what he Loves the most in life...his musik...his way. This beautiful being has strip himself bare through his musik. All he ever wanted us to do was listen to what he had to say and express. We have watched him celebrate life and plant seeds of growth. We listened as he tapped into parts of our consciousness where most of us dare not go or question, while leaving us plenty to ponder about ourselves and the world we live in. All of this while he was growing into the best him he can be. Like him or not. Like certain songs or not. Prince is Prince. He is who he is suppose to be. There is no way he could go back to how he was or how he performed in the 80's. Nor should he. So all those who are wanting him to raunch it up again...forget about it it ain't gonna happen. That was Prince then. Celebrate it. The musik is still out there. He is where he is now and will be whatever he wants to be or do whatever he wants to do in the future. We should celebrate that too.

Prince never limits himself. He is always exploring. His example should be ours. We have no limits other than the ones we put on ourselves. He allowed us to watch his metamorphosis. What a show! Thirty-five years of blood, sweat and tears. Most of us know many things he has been through in this lifetime eventhough we will never know it all but his musik is his life...his Love and he shared that with us.

We need to be not only grateful but respectful of Prince. Not everyone can do what he has done or is doing in way of giving of himself. He gives us a piece of himself through musik and he does it his way. Like it or not.

IMHO...job well done...keep it up Prince

So you respect their opinions but if those opinions are that Prince is lame / has lost it, then you don't want them to share those opinions? Do you really think that is respecting their opinions? I don't. Respecting their opinions would be to let them get on with it, and if you then find it necessary, to respectfully disagree with those opinions.

Also, if your suggestion were to become reality then it would be a zero-sum game. Some opinions would not be expressed because you don't want them to be (a win for you) and those who hold those opinions would not be afforded the right to express them (a loss for them). Unless I'm sorely mistaken (and I'm not) that is the exact definition of a zero-sum game.

And yes, I surely am suggesting that those who create "prince is lame" threads are doing so, at least in part, out of boredom. Which is fine (because frankly I'm a bit bored) - I am just suggesting a refocus on other things.
Well maybe some of those threads are created out of boredom, but the motivation is irrelevant as long as the threads add value, and in my opinion many of them do (even if it's only because they descend into farcical hate matches which provide me with a bit of cheap entertainment).

I could understand getting jaded if the PM&M forum was littered with negativity, but really, is it that bad? Everything around here is transitory. As I write this, out of 44 threads on the first page of the PM&M forum, I see only 1 that falls into the 'prince is lame / has lost it' category, and another 2 that might possibly be considered negative. I don't see any requirement for refocusing, if those who currently have negative or less than complimentary opinions on Prince and/or his music to share, and they are discouraged from doing so, then we end up with a skewed forum whose contents are not based on reality. If you really respect all opinions and the right of everyone to express them, no matter how negative or distasteful to you, then you shouldn't and wouldn't be suggesting that those opinions not be expressed.

Diversity of threads is great and I'm obviously not generalizing that there is NO discussion of music going on "at great length." So don't read more into what I said than what I said.
I'm only reading what you wrote - "if we can get off that topic and back to the actual music, maybe the boredom will subside". That sentence suggests that there is much boredom about and that nobody is discussing the music, I'm not reading anything into it that it doesn't already say.

The broad spectrum of Prince's appeal really can't be so simplistically defined as 'lovers/haters' by anyone over the age of maturity capable of logical thought.

specifically all you haters.
Am I one of "all you haters" then? That's great, thanks for that. I always wondered how I should be pigeon-holed. Just in case I ever forget, I've made myself a little 'Prince Hater' lapel badge (in the style of the 'rude boy' badge from the Controversy album cover). Want to see it? Here you go:

I shall wear it with pride.

That's exactly why he will not be touring 20Ten in the U.S.
Prince will not be touring in the US because some people don't like some of his music and say so on a web site? Yes, of course. Prince doesn't take anything else into consideration when planning where to tour.
