none...seriously, no one could cover prince right. ginuwine tried, and it was ok, but didn't come close. it's the same debate as with mj, no one could redo their songs well.

I cannot stand it when people other than Prince sing Prince songs. I don't even like when proteges sing his songs. Or their songs, for that matter.

Prince's style is pretty distinct even when he does run of the mill shit. "Hot Wit U", a fairly run of the mill and unimpressive track, would sound very different if any other producer did the same song. Prince just has a certain trademark sound in pretty much everything he writes. That all being said, when other people attempt to interpret his sound, it fails miserably. The only people who have achieved successful careers (barring one or two exceptions) after doing a Prince cover are the people who performed it their way. Imagine Sinead O'connor doing "Nothing Compares 2 U" like The Family or TLC doing "If I Was Your Girlfriend" like Prince. No thanks.

Well that's the whole point of doing a cover. The song is so good, it lives for itself and the one that sing the cover is taking the song somewhere else...that proves that the song is a good one (when it works with an other singer...).

To me, the more the cover is different, the better it is (17 days by Living color, Take me with you by Sharon Jones...)

The examples would be too numerous but just think of "Me and the devil",a Robert Johnson song by Gil Scott Heron or "With a little help from my friends" by Joe Cocker, so different from the original. And no worry, you can always go back to the real one, it still exists !!!

Doesn't even work when Prince tries to cover himself...

Exhibit A: 1999 - The New Masters...

Formally known as Mr_Nos on Housequake

Hate is such a strong word, I'm just disillusioned...
