Would YOU like Prince better if he was still "cussing?"

The first few "clean" albums Prince played coy with dirty words; you know what he "would've" said. By calling attention to itself, Prince was "joking" with the fact you'd know what he "meant to say." Not so cool to me.

He also did this in concert. Even worse.

But, on this new album there really is none of that. No coy references to "what he really meant to say." I love that he throws in "doing it" on "Walk in Sand." It says it all.

Whatcha' all think?

I could not care less if he swore in his music, but I sure as fuck am bored of his euphemisms for swearing. I knew when I heard "let me see you shake your pants" that it was all heading down a corny as fuck road.

At 52, it was about time he grew up, and i'm glad he no longer does.

I generally don't like swearing, though it has it's time and place.

I think it displays a lack of intelligence and/or limited vocabulary. People who punctuate every sentence they speak with foul language don't realise it takes less effort to say what you want in the first place without resorting to swearing. Say what you want, you don't have to put an 'F' word in front and in the middle of everything.

Motherfuckers. smile

n

i respect his choice not to curse

however thats not an excuse to write unfulfilled lyrics

some of his recent lyrics are like "wow! he really meant that one cool "or "wow! thats catchy cool "

and others are like "damn! what was he thinking with that one ill "

but we all arent gonna love everything he puts out so whatever hrmph

to me it seems like his faking his happiness "like oh everybody love me yeah! lets get happy "

come on dude! everyone probably doesn't love you if you have to make a song about it professing that everyone loves you!!

maybe i got the meaning of the song all wrong shrug idk

but if everyone one really loved you they would tell u so........and you would believe it

I'm proud of him for not cussing. Many people would benefit from being a bit more creative with their euphanisms and such instead of just swearing all the time. I'm trying to work on it as well, partly thanks to some inspiration from Prince.

I respect him with this change in lifestyle-

it shows maturity aswell as smarts being capable of using words much more constructive then profanities only feeding to the delights of the Devil & people of this world.

"Not to sound cosmic, but I've made plans for the next 3,000 years," he says. "Before, it was only three days at a time."

I dont know...sometimes I miss the bad Prince, but then on the other hand, the man is 52 years old and it would seem a bit desperate if he was carrying on like he was in his earlier years. Madonna looks trashy because she's still trying to act young and appear "controversial"... TBH its embarassing no no no!

i don't think there's cussing in Parade (except for what is spelled out by the ladies), Around the World in a Day, SOTT, Batman, Grafitti Bridge.... etc etc etc...

as far as his studio stuff. He sure did cuss a lot in his big movie though.

"Answer me motherfucker!"

Prince is stupid for changing lyrics to songs like

Chaos and Disorder,the Truth,

he is even more stupid for not

performing his raunchie songs.

it's ok to choose to make cussing free albums

but if the earlier songs have the F word

why censorship???

Prince of old would hate this new Prince for

his music and i'll tell you one thing

the only reason Prince don't curse this days is not maturity it's only to make his idol Larry Graham happy

Larry was the one leaving Prince's concerts because of cursing.

If you listen to october 1997 show with Larry and Prince,Prince did curse a lot

during this tour Larry convinced Prince not to curse

if you listen to his 1998 concerts Prince still performed Sexy MF

but he let audiance sing the riscque stuff.

by the 1999 year he stoped cursing but from time to time he cursed by accident like in live performance

of Baby Knows (Her shit ain't brown )

so please if you wanna say why Prince stopped cursing then tell the real leason:to make his big brother happy

I have to answer yes but let me qualify that. I have no problem with Prince not cursing in his new music. I find it mildly annoying when he changes his lyrics while performing live (for example in "I Feel For You" I'm sexually attracted to you becomes I'm spiritually attracted to you) but that's ok too. But what I can't stand is when he alters older songs. I never want to hear a version of "Bob George" without the cursing because it would take away from my enjoyment of the song. It seems unlikely that certain vault songs ("Wonderful Ass," for example) will be released while Prince is a devout JW. So, based solely on the fact that I want to hear his music in the original, unedited form, yes, I would like Prince better if he was still cussing. One of my favourite eras was '93-'96 and there was a fair bit of cursing going on then. When/if he decides to release some vault material from that era, be it studio or live, I would much rather prefer to hear the songs as they were originally recorded rather than getting edited versions.

I do think that if Prince resharpened the mean streak, he'd start improving. That's what made him great back in the day. He was obnoxious, arrogant, hungry, untouchable, and best of all: he didn't give a flying fuck. I know you can only innovate so much in a lifetime and he has settled down with age, but he's done so a little too much.

I agree. I kinda like LOVE dirty little Prince, but just like I wouldn't expect him to walk out on stage with a bikini underwear, legwarmers and a trench coat at 52 then I can't expect him to litter his music with all kinda curse words at his age either. He's a different man than he was then, alot more peaceful... which is okay with me. I'd still hit. cool

The one thing I don't like about the "new" Prince is that he seemed to feel ashamed of his past... well not really ASHAMED... but... regretful may be the right word I'm looking for. I remember reading an interview where he said he was ashamed of the way he played certain songs, which is mind-blowing to me. **sigh** I truly am happy for him, but I can't help but feeling like the path that he's on isn't exactly... um... conducive to his creativity if you get what I mean. I don't wanna bash JW but come the EFF ON! UGHHHH!!!!

And I definitely don't agree with him changing the words to songs to suit a more spiritual vibe. The song is the song P, one of the reason we love the songs so much is because of the lyrics. Why change them?

But I still wish him the best.

Not really, he did it a bit in the early days when he was a cutting edge rebel. The context and the music was right then, up to about the 1999 period, the Purple Rain til Lovesexy he didn't need it, but it came back in the early 90s with his pap rap phase. But really his last f worded laded music was on the Truth album back in 98. Prince is now too mature and grown to resort to childish language. Swearing is left for youth metaller types (Slipknot, Linkun park) and Shit hop music. I read somewhere, that people curse when they are lacking in vocabulary.

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Well, that's stretching the truth quite a lot. Isn't it? Prince doesn't cuss anymore. That's it. He still sings about sex as much as God and anyone paying attention to the lyrics knows this.

I don't know many polished conservatives who wear heels, make-up, rock n' roll/pimp outfits. Also, do the songs "Head" or "Darling Nikki" contain any swear words?

Prince of 2010 is more like Prince of 1988 than many will admit. But, to each his own. If you think this guy is a "polished conservative" than good for you...

I think his cursing really picked up in the 90's actually

the 80's music had a word here n there

1999 had a few, and Controversy & Dirty Mind had very few actually, the 1st 2 I don't remember any

Like nothing on Purple Rain had curse words, Erotic City-B side only used the F word

Around the World in a Day had none, Girl-extended had some near the end

Parade had none that I can recall

Sign o the Times had dam on Housequake but that is hardly a swear word

and nothing else that I can recall, if it was it was very minimal

Lovesexy? I don't think it had much, B side Scarlett Pussy- I think is covered by the connection to being a cat

Batman I don't think had any

I agree with those who say that cussing didn't make or break a song. Although, the occasional we ain't talking 'bout cards muthafucka or something of the like added a bit of attitude to a track. Still, I can understand not cursing just for the sake of cursing. However, I think it's a bit silly to go so far out of your way not to. Sometimes it's needed! Of course, I'm not very religious.

I agree with both of you.

When it was once in a while, I dug it. Kind of got out of control in the nineties, so that it lost the power he could create by using the words sparingly. Now I think it would sound weird if he started doing it again.

It's not so much that I want him to cuss, it's just some if his tracks will never be played again or will be watered down by changing some words to fluffy meanings....even the must mundane lyric is up for that honour (ie I feel for you)

No, there comes a time for all of us grow out of it. A young man "might" be able to pull off something like cussing, a tight blouse, performing simulated oral sex on a microphone, and shaking his ass,

but i think even a gay porn actor on drugs in his early 40's would find it demeaning.

I think there's a couple of issues to this...

a) Whether he cusses or not was always fairly irrelevant. It wouldn't change most of his music, if he had never cussed... HOWEVER, it goes beyond that. It's the artificial restriction on sexuality that is the problem. Darling Nikki doesn't contain curse words, does it? Most of the "early" music that he now avoids doesn't contain curse words but it DOES deal with adult sexuality. The idea that singing about sex = cursing = bad is silly.

b) The lack of the above wouldn't be so bad if he didn't focus on how he's NOT saying those things anymore... He's drawing attention to it and looking like a buffoon with a curse jar.

Also, doesn't "intent" matter more than the words themselves??? If he's still singing about the same thing but simply couching it in different terms then what has he really accomplished? "I wanna go down south" = "head until your love is red"

It's th polar opposite of Sister...he went out if his way to be the most outrageous and 'dirty' he could and it was like "WTF"....now it's changing 'physical' for 'Spiritual' or in the case of NPGMC, taking some of your membership quota to deliberately re-release a sexy song like Horny Pony, just to edit out the sexy bit to be squeaky clean and now it's..."WTF"

Having said that perhaps it's for the best...I cringe at that lump of gristle Madonna

It's actually to the point now where my ears go...."Jeez he just mentioned kissing in a song" or I'm looking for the hidden meaning when a song actually seems to be about the perfectly natural act of making love.

All I can say is that if he lives by his lyrics he must have nuts like a Space Hopper by now and I wouldn't like to be the woman who releases that payload.

It's not so much the actual swearing that I miss, but rather the attitude that went along with it. "Prince is dead", indeed neutral
