Purple Rain Motorbike

someone has no doubt posted somewhere about this before but,

Can anyone tell me what model of bike was the Purple Rain bike based on? I'm finding conflicting reports on the net? If i'm ever to fullfil my ambition of making one i need to know biggrin

Also was a replica ever for sale anywhere or has anyone ever made one?

According to wikipedia:

"The motorcycle Prince rides in the film is a customized Hondamatic Honda CB400A."

That's pretty close. But is was actually a 1979 Honda CM400A (a fairly popular model at the time), heavily customised and with unique Windjammer Vetter Fairing.

Did Prince have to learn to ride the motorcycle for the movie or did he already regularly ride one I wonder...I don't recall any stories of him riding one before the movie.

Prior to filming Purple Rain, Big Chick taught Prince how to ride on this motorcycle which sold on eBay a while back.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Heavily customised? What did they change about it?

Different bike. Both are still kept at Paisley Park - though, I'm sure that at least two of each were made. I'm not sure of the model, I'm not a "motorcycle" guy.

Is there any truth to the rumor that since his hip problems, he had them custom fit with side saddle seats?

Wow, I was watching PR last week and was thinking about the bike the whole time!

I love how small he is on it.

I was told at the time by a Motrcylce expert it was a Honda Custom 450 with a windjammer V

Not sure on the year. But most motercycle people at a shop should be able to tell by a photo.

Or you can ask this guy:

He painted two of the stunt bikes.

This is interesting - the Automatic was turned into the Graffiti Bridge bike and the Purple Rain stunt bike was kept original:

This question was asked in a Hondamatic forum awhile back. This is the real scoop ....

In Response To: I need some help (Fernando)

I did the bike back in 1984. It is a Honda 400 automatic. I believe the year to be about 1980 or so. It was bought along with two stunt bikes that weren't autos brand new from a dealer as leftover models. The automatic had its Comstar wheels converted to spokes to resemble the stunt bikes. The fairng is a brand name Kutter. I bought them from a company in Iowa I believe named the Kutter company. The three seats are one off, with hot pink velour inserts custom made in Drag Specialties upholstery deaptment. The sissy bar was a standard Drag spec. item. The handlebars are the 6 bend variety. As for the bikes today...one of the stunt bikes remains purple and is on display at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, MN. I redid Princes bike along with the thrashed stunt bike in black and gold for the movie Grafiti Bridge in about 1990. As for Sport Wheels having any of the bikes..doubtful...but any thing is possible. What they do have is a replica Kutter fairing that I sold them years back. They tell everyone that its off Princes bike.....wrong. Any other questions ?? I'd be more than happy to answer.....Tom.

1 ov the things that really bugged me about the bike in purple rain is how it changes from road tires to off road tires in a flash of an eye. wink

Yeah...it went from road tires to knobby off road tires in a splitsecond.
I think some of those movie mistakes websites also mention this.

I know. That was so glaringly bad from a continuity perspective. The first thing me and my friend noticed while watching it at the theater. They certainly could have used the automatic for the dirt burn-outs.
