S.O.T.T. ... This Album Sux !!!

Um ... Yeah ... I wasn't serious but, I may be the only P fan for a loooonnngg time that did not like S.O.T.T.

Ever since I found out about the true albums that P & The Revolution wrote together I've been a little "upset" that we do not have the REAL versions of so said albums.

What album by P you didn't like at first but now like or even love?
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

LOL I wouldn't say it sux, BUT, when I realized where all this came from, and that SOTT wasn't Prince back to his '1 man band' stuff, cause that's how SOTT was paraded. I was disappointed and I definately felt something wrong happened between Parade & SOTT. We missed out on what could have been an increase and growth in Prince via Dream Factory / Camille

That period was difficult. He had like, what, four albums planned? I don't know if it was an issue with him and his label or what... confused

I was pissed with "Around The World In A Day", "Parade", "Sign O The Times", and "Lovesexy" when they were released. I grew to love each one of them before the next album was released but I was pissed at the time because Prince had still not snapped out of his phase and returned to his old self like he was before "Purple Rain".

I was just so happy to have a new album fresh outta bootcamp, I loved it right off. Took me a while to warm up to "IT" and "The Cross" though.

Snapped out of it?
Did you think he would stay in the New Wave funk forever, even thought PR has that too

I loved that NEW WAVE vibe, but ATWIAD is still my favorite album

Oh, I know "Purple Rain" had his old sound and I loved "Purple Rain" instantly like all the previous albums. I said like he was before "Purple Rain" because I, like so many others, thought he changed his style after "Purple Rain" because he became a huge success with pop fans, like so many other R&B artists did. Remember, Lionel Richie was never the same again. lol But then I saw that pop fans had become pissed with him for changing his style even moreso than the R&B fans so when I said "snapped out of it", he would go so broke that he'd have to revert back to his old style whether he wanted to or not. I and so many others never dreamed the Europeans were eating his style change up and loving it. Oh, how we used to cuss about the Europeans for everything they were worth back then for making it easy for him to not change back to his old self. lol

It was an issue with the label. UTCM was expensive and flopped. He had to have lost some backing with WB.

LOL

One thing for sure is a lot of the band member thought the change was too soon/too drastic.

If I had any pull back then I would have had him release 2 album. No way at that height WB would have denied him.

I would have released ATWIAD and "Purple Music or MoonBeam Levels" music that was the follow up 2 1999(as prince said in an interview) combined with PR outtakes like Traffic Jam

I was so happy to see that he was not stuck in one style and that he changed with every album, that's when I knew he was the real thing and not just the flavour of the moment. Well, after a while, he stopped changing and... sad

I like it but I'm in the minority that doesn't think it's his greatest album. It's not in my Top 5, or maybe even Top 10, Prince albums, as a matter of fact.

It's threads like this that make me wish Prince would hurry up and release new music as the natives are restless and we all need to be spared from having to put up with mindless and pathetic threads like this!!!

Sign of the Times is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Yeah SOTT sux...

...seriously I wish it had been recorded with a more powerful, clearer, wider sound, like Parade or Lovesexy.

But the songs are part of his best ones.

So it sux but not so much !

I didn't like SOTT or Lovesexy at all when I first heard them. Over the years though, they have grown to be two of my favorite albums. Give it time. smile

'Sign O' The Times' is a great album. It was a great way 2 show case what he did from 1984-86 and take it 2 the next level. The Dream Factory is a great unreleased album. Bcuz Prince expanded the project in2 'Sign O' The Times', I think we have a reallly amazing unreleased project with 'Roadhouse Garden'.

I absolutely LOVE SOTT.

But when I first heard it I only liked it. Then on by the third listening I was hooked.
This is true with all his 80s releases after PR. The main reason is that I would :

1) expect Purple Rain pt. 2

2) Get used to the sound of the previous album and expect a continuation of that.

Prince shifted gears with every album constantly updating his look, his sound, and the overall energy. It was an exciting time.

I'd say the first album that had me scratching my head was PARADE (my favorite Prince album). lol

Allow me to clarify: my point was that I didn't feel or see what fans were saying and how they thought this was a brilliant album. My point is it is a great album but, now that I know there was more music cut out of this album and Lisa and Wendy's music was removed that's what I didn't understand and what I was ticked off about. S.O.T.T I'd give 4 1/2 stars, only because W&L material was not included ...

Got it? ... Good ...
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Back in 1987 aside from the title track, Housequake, If I was Your Girlfriend, Starfish and Coffee, The Cross....

I wasn't into the album. I remember all my firend saying they liked Janet Jackson's singles at the time much more fun to listen to than Prince's SOTT tracks. Outside of Housequake.

The movie helped me hear it in a different way, and also it just aged well. Also the Joffrey Baller helped me appreciate "It" as being dramatic... I originally hated as too simple and boring.
