in the early days Prince's lead guitar was based
on minor pentatonic scale

after Purple Rain his guitar style started

to grow and he started using exotic scales
and modes such as frygian and lydian and dorian.

He started playing lead and rhythm fills at the same time.
with years he become more tehnical ,
faster more of guitar players guitarist.

And every guitar solo by Prince have at least one very tricky part.

Prince's rhythm guitar playing is amazing,
maybe you can find better soloist which is more a matter of
your personal taste but you can't find funkier
rhythm guitar player then Prince.

^Ditto!

Despite playing interesting solos, even if too repetitive, I've always said that Prince's better guitar asset is rhythming.

I think I've heard no peer at funky guitar rhythming.

I think prince is easily written off as a guitarist because he's often seen as just a pop artist. A couple of friends were included in this group until they saw him on one of those Late Night shows (can't remember which one) promoting LotusFlow3r. One friend in particular said "damn, I didn't know Prince was that good." lol
I still play pokemon. I play warcraft. And I'm awesome.

"Shy" - one of my fave funk rhythm guitar passages.

And just to add: Prince LOVES playing sus2 (or add 9) chords. (More in rock songs than funk.)
Seemed to pick up on them around 1984, and never turned back.

I also find Prince's solos change registers way more than most players - kind of erratically jumping up & down. And don't forget that whammy bar... smile

^I'd say it was Wendy who taught Prince how to embellish chords with tensions and inversions making them less simple.

I don't think he has any "main" chords.....if u listen, he is all over the place. Each song and live performance tends 2 dictate something different. A least 2 my ears.
