I always thought that but now I am wondering if Forever in my Life is a better articulation.

not that "love" isn't deep. my first thought is more "socially conscious" songs like Colonized Mind, Dreamer, and Dear Mr Man.

but when i ponder "spiritual love" instead of "romantic love" songs like 4 the Tears in Your Eyes, Elephants and Flowers, God, Love, The Cross, Still Would Stand All Time, come to mind and have great depth to them IMO.

Deep. That would mean thoughtful, or thought provoking. While those songs you listed are political in nature, are they deep? Hmmm. Tough call. Prince has a lot of political songs. Even the weird "Ronnie, Talk 2 Russia" is blatantly political. "Sexuality" is social commentary, as is "America", "Race", "Papa". "Annie Christian" is too (which makes me realize that Controversy is a more political/social album that some might first think it to be). Then you have Prince answering criticisms in songs like "Hello" and "Billy Jack Bitch". But deep?

I think "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is deep. He's really exploring the ways to get to this girl, and get on the "in" with her, and have her open up (more than her meat curtains) to him. "Forever In My Life" is along those lines too. It's more than one of those "if we got married, would that be cool?" lines.

I think "Electric Chair" is deep. That line...that line is so perfect. "If a man is considered guilty for what goes on in his mind, then give me the electric chair for all my future crimes." I always thought that was fucking brilliant. He's giving into his weakness in some ways. It's an interesting juxtaposition when you compare it to the Bible, when God said, "Don't lust over a woman, even if you think it in your heart, you've done it." Prince is giving into (not on a sexual level per se) his lack of control in some regards. He's giving up the ghost of the situation, "I can't stop, so just shoot me now." The whole song is about seeing a girl and wanting to seduce her and possess her, no matter what. But yet somehow, it goes beyond the usual "Oh, I can't hold it, oh, it's gettin' all over me" type thing. There's a sinister nature to the song, a darker, raw, animalistic emotion to it.

Prince is definitely a story teller, and so many of his songs are based on real life experiences, and whatever idealism he's gained over his life. Stuff like "Dear Mr. Man", "Money Don't Matter 2 Nite", "Positivity", "Dance On", "Anna Stesia", "Dreamer", etc are his twocents on whatever is going on in the world. But many of us have those opinions, or similar ones, so are we all as deep as Prince? Nah, I think we, and Prince, are attentive to the world and the news at large.

Deepest lyrics?????

I've always found the lyrics to 'The Love We Make' as deep

Desperate is the day that is 2morrow
4 those who do not know the time has come
2 whip the dogs that beg, steal or borrow
From the table God set 4 His Son
Wicked is the witch that stands 4 nothing
All the while watching 2 see U fall
Deeper than the ditch that bred your suffering
The one being dug right now by them all

Happy is the way 2 meet your burdens
No matter how heavy or dark the day
Pity on those with no hope 4 2morrow
It's never as bad as it seems until we say

Precious is the baby with a mother
That tells him that his Saviour is coming soon
All that believe will cleanse and purify themselves
Put down the needle, put down the spoon {x2}

Sacred is the prayer that asks 4 nothing, oh
While seeking 2 give thanks 4 every breath we take, oh
Blessed are we inside this prayer
4 in the new world, we will be there

The only love there is, is the love we make {x2}
(The only love there is, is the love we make)
Only love there is, only love there is
The only love there is, is the love we make (Yeah)
The only love there is, is the love we make
Grandma's hands clapped in church on Sunday morning, Grandma's hands played the tamborine so well.

Yep, lots of good lyrics in there. At first glance, some casual listener might take the chorus as sexual innuendo, but it's really not. He really is saying "if we don't love each other, who will love us?"

Amorist

Holy River

"And then it hit you like a fist on a wall
Who gave you life when there was none at all?
Who gave the sun permission to rise up everyday?

If you asked god to love you longer,
every breathe you take would make you stronger
Keeping you happy and proud to call his name
Jesus (Jesus)

Over and over you ask your soul,
why'd you come down to a World so cold?
A voice inside says tonight the truth will be told"

I would Die 4 U

"Your just a sinner I am told, be your fire when you are cold
Make you happy when your sad, make you good when you bad
I'm not a human I am a dove, I'm your conscience I am love
All that I really need, is to know that you believe"

Ill think of others, them two were off the top of my head

Deepest Prince song? There are many.

I really love the lyrics to The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. I think the song and lyrics are beautiful and thought provoking.

I also love Dreaming About U (one of my fav Prince songs). The words are so poetic and romantic. I love it.

there are so many....

A Dada or poppycock-influenced piece could be considered deep ("it's deep, how you can be so shallow") with the proper mindset; I find just as many truths in the literary-nonsense classic of Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as I do Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

So I'll go with "Starfish and Coffee".
If U set your mind free, baby, maybe U'd understand.

What about "Empty Room" lyrics? Prince just put down all of his feelings from breakup and I'm sure that every living person could connect with those lyrics. They are so true and I would call them "sadly beautiful", if you know what I mean. Deep? For me sure..

or "Be My Mirror". Those two songs always seemed like brothers to me, probably because of the messages in them, and the mood/feel.

Good one. IIRC they were both supposed to appear in some movie in 90's (I'd Do Anything?), am I right?

I think 'deep' might be a bit presumptious but there are quite a few thought provoking lyrics. Most of them have been mentioned above but I'll add these two:

''Starfish and Coffee'' although presented as a story told, I like these lyrics a lot because they plea thinking out of the box and accepting there are alternatives to the common ways. very nice.

"the One U wanna C" . I really liked the ''every nickle in this club looking for a dime, nothing less nothing more''-line. Made me realise that we are all looking for someone to look up to a bit, but not too much, whilst the other can do the same. nice insight into relations(hips).

Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise,
Flying upon the wings of the New Translation
See them fly, fly
The covenant will b kept this time
Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise

Rainbow children, it's time 2 rise!
Rainbow children, it's time 2 rise!

As prophesied, the Wise One and his woman were tempted by the Resistor. He,
knowing full well the Wise One's love 4 God, assimilated the woman first and
only. Quite naturally, chaos ensued and she and 5 others were banished from
the rainbow.4ever.

Who is ur real father?
The everlasting one
The one who came from nothing
And yet from this one, everything comes

The one who commands ur momma
With the simple phrase "I am"
And every time that she obeys
She gives birth 2 the Son of Man
Who is this?

Reproduction of the new breed leader/Stand up and organize!
Reproduction of the new breed leader/Stand up and organize!

The Agreement-
With every birth, we keep it so/Never changing one piece of it
In fear of what would unfold/The scales would then become unbalanced
And thus would begin the fall/The sin of one would become
The sin of one and all

The Wise One who understood the law that was handed down from God long ago,
held fast in his belief that the Lord would bring him another one who loved him so.

Interesting. I agree with TheChief in a way...

I always thought the line from "Dark," was pretty deep..."Like an innocent man that's on death row."

"Solo," is very deep on a personal level of shame or guilt.

"Everlasting Now," is deep in a visualizing sense....This song is fun loving however it is serious in spiritual nature...This song rolls out the red carpet for Jesus in my mind. cool
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I always thought "Computer Blue" was deep. For once, Prince doesn't have all the answers. God doesn't respond to his plea for the perfect woman who will complete him and make everything alright. So he's forced to look at himself and question the way he sees others. Upon introspection, he learns that he can't idealize women, that they are "hardwired" the same as men and have needs and desires of their own that need to be met. In actuality, there is no "righteous one".
