THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HAS BUGGED ME FOR QUITE SOME TIME...


HOW DOES THE WHOLE BOOTLEG THING WORK?

I'VE HEARD/SEEN MY FAIR SHARE OF UNOFFICIAL MATERIAL IN MY TIME, MOSTLY ON CD/DVD-R'S AND NOW DEFUNCT TORRENT SITES.
I'VE ALSO HAD THE FORTUNE OF OBTAINING A FEW LEGITIMATE COPIES:

BUT WHERE ARE THE LEGIT COPIES PRODUCED? (I'M NOT ASKING FOR DETAILS OR ANYWAY TO OBTAIN THEM)
I'M JUST CURIOUS AS THE ARTWORK ON SOME OF THESE ARE AWESOME(!) AND THEY EVEN GET THEIR OWN LITTLE ADVERTISING BANNERS. JUST GOES TO SHOW THE THING THAT PRINCE REALLY HATES IS WHAT HE COULD EASILY BE DOING HIMSELF

You´re right about most bootlegs looking much better than the official releases these days. Prince´s team could learn from the bootleggers.

I guess small pressing plants will do the job while turning a blind eye toward the legalities of the situation. The same goes for the print shops that produce the booklets and inserts. Artwork has generally been done in trade for copies of the product. Bootleggers are obviously not making the money they used to, and are pressing in smaller quantities due to the 'net. They've become a niche of a niche. I have shitloads of silver bootlegs, which are nice to have - but the better quality stuff can all be found online now as lossless files.
