17 Days

I'm actually just listening to this early Prince jam and it is becoming one of my faves by him. All these years and I'm just listening to it. I've read that it was actually meant for V6, and you can hear Brenda singing backup. It's one of my fave B-sides, for sure.

Great song from the days when Prince's b-sides were comparable to his best output.

It was meant to be on Apollonia 6's album, along with "Manic Monday", "Take Me With U", and "Glamorous Life". We know where those songs ended up. You can hear Brenda's voice on "Manic Monday" was well.

Damn, am I glad those songs did not end up on Apollonia 6's album!

True, but imagine how much better of an album it would have been with better songs on it. I can SORT of get through the songs, but there's a couple that are just pure laziness. Even if Prince did pull the above songs from the album, why didn't he put other good tracks on there? "Some Kind of Lover" and "Happy Birthday Mr. Christian" is ridiculously embarrassing. And "Toy Box" from Sheila E. is a direct copy of "Blue Limousine". That hook is about one note off from being a duplicate. I think he just never took enough stock in Apollonia 6's album. We know she couldn't really sing, but come on. She's got a campy voice, and Brenda can hold vocals too. Eh. Water under the bridge.

You create your own reality. Be happy. There's no honor in being a glum emo clone all the time.

And how can someone NOT be happy listening to

Blue Limousine has it's DNA derived from 1999 too. I guess that makes Toy Box a descendant as well - not to mention Manic Monday. 1999 has to be Prince's most used recipe.

I love '17 Days'. I wish it appeared on the Purple Rain album. I hope one day Prince will release the extended version 2 '17 Days', which remains in the vault.

I love (the one that's circulating on bootlegs) the piano version '17 Days' recorded in 1983, that is amazing.

That pic of P and Apples, allowing with various clips from the trailer, let you know that they actually did film Purple Rain according to the full script that's floating around on line. There's a part in the script where (Vanity) gives him a wildflower outside of a barn, right after one of their arguments, and what follows is the "barn sex scene."

Here's that script for those that haven't read it. It's kind of fascinating how far they thought they could push the envelope.

Actually I did. This IS Prince.org, ya know. We know about the barn scene (which was in the trailer), Prince scuffling w/ Jellybean (in the trailer), etc etc. The original script w/ Vanity is online actually, which differs greatly from the released film w/ Apollonia.

Now when you talk b-sides 17 Days is at the top of my tree. With it’s elastic bass, shaking tambourines and rain drop melody the song just lays out heartbreak in a way that makes it so attractive and places you in the despair lyrically while musically it offers a glimmer of hope. I know I’m not alone thinking this song would have been a hit as an A-side at the time. The fact it was the b-side to When Doves Cry probably means it got a good airing none the less.

Me too.

Anyone else like Living Colour's cover of 17 Days? It was a b-side on their Auslander CD-Single. The melody is played on guitar. Very cool.
