Prince and Springsteen!

I both like Springsteen and Prince (and I know 4 sure Prince went 2 C Springsteen in Berlin on October 20 2002). This is what I picked up at Lacava.org. Your comments?

Sounds strange... doesn't it ?

But no, it is not off-topic at all...

Why am I talking about Bruce Springsteen and Prince ?

Is there really a way we can associate those two artists ? No, not possible !

Have they sung together ? No, two kinds of music too different, they CANNOT have sung together.

---

Let us get back to a long time ago... something like 18 years ago, right ?

Before "Born in the USA" was released Bruce's track which reached the top lace in the Top Ten was "Bobby Jean". Both of them are becoming more and more famous (if they are not already ).

1984 is a big year for those two artists.
- For Prince, it is the release of the movie "Purple Rain" and the success of its soundtrack.
- For Bruce Springsteen, it is the release of his brand new album "Born in the USA" with the title song which is now world-famous.

For sure, Bruce Springsteen attended at least one of the concerts of the Purple Rain Tour.

Prince, went to one of the first concerts of the "Born in the USA Tour" near his home at the Civic Auditorium Minneapolis. Prince will even go to the backstage after the concert to talk to Bruce Springsteen. (By the way, I am still looking for the mp3 of the conversation.)

And.. YES, Bruce Springsteen sang on stage with Prince during the Purple Rain Tour. It was during the concert in LA the 23-02-1985. (I am updating the zipped file of the mp3 on a website, will give you the adress so that you can get it once the update is complete. I don't really find where to recognize Springsteen in the mp3 but he sang with Pricne on a Pricne song. Well, you are the specialists so you will probably find it. fur sure Bruce is part of the musicians during this mp3.)

Okay it sounds old 1984.

Prince made a World Tour for his last release "One Nite Alone Live". During his concert in Zurich, he showed the way Bruce Springsteen fan move their hands and then showed how he wanted his fans to do it. After it, he said seriously :
quote:
---
But, please don't make fun of Bruce. I like his music.
---

And yes Prince said it to his fans less than two months ago. Amazing, isn't it ?

I am sure you have many things to add to this speech...

(will post a reply for the adress where to get the zipped file of the mp3 in few minutes, in less than an hour)

So, what else to associate Bruce Springsteen and Prince ?

They both play telecasters.

They both have the requisite song about a car as a metaphor: Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" and Prince's "Little Red Corvette."

They both had their first big critical acclaim with their 3rd albums: Born To Run & Dirty Mind.

They both jump on pianos while performing during gigs (at least they used to).

Ummm...Prince has "Underneath The Cream" and "Cream"...Springsteen has "I'm On Fire" and "Fire"...I'm reaching here...shrug

Btw, 1 of the most funniest liner notes I read was from Springsteen on het Greatest Hits album. This was about not reaching the no 1 slot with Dancing in the Dark because Purple Rain was the No 1 song of that time.

Damn the artist formerly known as Prince! He said in the liner notes.

I was told that Prince attended the Springsteen show in St. Paul in September also, but I didn't see him or any of his people so I'm not sure if I believe it. But I now for a fact he attended the show in Berlin in October.

Then a few nights later he made the crack about how Springsteen's fans clap differently, but added that he likes Bruce's music.

As for similarities; the most important being they are both GREAT musicians.

Don't know if this was already mentioned, but it's said that after Prince saw Springsteen on the Born In The USA tour he decided he wanted a horn player in his band. Within a couple of days, Eric Leeds was brought in to record some stuff. The rest, as they say, is history...

A Prince/Springsteen collaboration would be very interesting. Two very talented and very different artists. It's been a known fact for a long time that they have mutual respect for one another. I think they are the two best (and most talented) things that ever happened musically in the 80's.

Yep, there is definitely mutual respect. I remember a Prince interview (maybe the 1990 Rolling Stone one) where Prince admits that Springsteen is one man whose fans are so loyal that Prince would never be able to steal them away! Also, I remember him making a comparison (don't think it's in the same interview) where he says that when he goes to a Springsteen show, he doesn't get recognized whereas at a Michael Jackson show he does. Seemed to be a sly dig at Michael's performances not being quite enthralling...but maybe not, who knows?
