Prince wants to know your name

Lately I've been thinking about how much I love the Prince songs that are written for and about people whose names he doesn't even know. Something about the primal sexual energy in those songs seems really hot. Like being so desperate for the attention of this stranger that you'll write a whole song for them. And when he goes even more over the top--such as calling them "the one" or thinking of them as a soulmate even though he doesn't know their name--it makes it even better.

He has several songs in this way, and I love them all: "Electric Intercourse," "One Nite Alone," "Love Like Jazz." "The Morning After" is kind of close--he apparently knows her name but he has no idea where she lives or what her phone number is. "Nasty Girl" is somewhat in this vein, of course, although it's not a love song ("I still won't tell you my name").

I love when his sexual frustration gets all mixed up with this romantic notion that someone he's barely met is going to be so integral to his life. When he writes music from that place--and I think we've all been there--it's so totally relatable and is such a great way to channel his sexualized persona and creativity.

Thoughts and other songs where Prince doesn't know the name of the person he's singing to? Feel free to jump in. I'm bored today.

He doesn't really say that he doesn't know her name, but somehow he implies that she must be some kind of stranger who was already promised to someone else - unreachable - but he just wants to have some fun. But only with her!

People know better than to give Prince their name because he'll sue them.
