Purple Rumor Mill: Prince reaches Deal with Youtube?

This is from Dr FB: http://www.drfunkenberry.com/

If this rumor is true, it is unprecedented.

We are hearing rumors that Youtube is now paying Prince to have his music on their site.

Prince, a long standing opponent of youtube, may have finally reached an agreement with the popular video web site. Lately, Prince’s latest videos and songs have been getting posted on youtube (but wanting the videos not to be posted elsewhere and has disabled the embed code to post on various web sites.) So he may be easing off on them.

I think it is a GREAT decision. I have always been a supporter of youtube and if radio doesn’t play your stuff or MTV is too busy showing an episode of the Hills, youtube is an amazing promotional tool.

What do you guys think of this decision?

I don’t really care if it took Youtube to pay Prince, just glad he is open to the usage of it.-Dr.FB

Prince.org is a cemetery where folks mourn Prince instead of celebrate him and his music. Last time I checked, Prince isn't dead yet.

HERE's an IDEA:

Maybe 'Prince' can start putting his own music videos on his OWN WEBSITE first?

Thus promoting his MUSIC.....

Then put them on Youtube second.....?

Gesssssh!, WHAT A BRILLANT IDEA!

LOLOLOLOLOL!

I hope it is true, so many can check out his music....

If you see the George Harrison tribute classic "while my guitar gently weeps" on you tube, you can see how surprised many people are when they see him play like that.... ^^

Hang on, Why should You Tube pay him?

What for?

If anything, they should be rewarded for bringing his videos to the masses.

The problem with this is, once other artists hear of this, what's stopping them asking for the same or similar deal? Then once Youtube can't afford to fund every artist, then the user (ie: us) will end up paying for using Youtube because it will become a subscription base site.

Here's an idea, Prince plays ball like everyone else

IIRC, last year some groups like LZ, RHChP etc were removed from youtube, because youtube wasn't paying enough to one record company. Here in Czech Republic it was even in the news.

Completetly ignorant!

Its not just Prince who is being paid - ALL artists are being paid. YouTube have struck a deal with the Performing Rights Society, which means any artists who are members (which is the majority) will be RIGHTFULLY paid for use of THEIR product by a third-party who are only successful because of the CONTENT.

They are already "rewarded" for their apparently altruistic marketing to the masses - you really think they operate for nothing already?

Like I said - ignorant!

Content of an site is what attracts the people...

Maybe he knows that Lotusfuc*3r site isn't good. I've visited that site twice - just to listen to Colonized Mind - and the computer always got stuck..with youtube there're no speed problems.

I can't see Prince changing his mind on his copyright stance, he's fought half of his career for that. But it's just a rumor so far. Time will tell.

If you look around... you'll find this to be common among a lot of artist. Some of thier videos are 'only' available on thier own YT pages and/or thier labels.

And he should make the videos 'free' to the masses instead of exclusive to the few. I can only hope that Lotusflow3r will still get some 'cough' 'cough' exclusive content... but I'm done holding my breath.

Because Prince has been a high profile artist demanding that his stuff not be on YT. And now if he has reached an agreement... individually or as part of a whole..... it's a radical shift from his high profile policies of the recent past.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/h...234125.stm

Perhaps because the deal with PRS is fairly UK specific. That said, Prince is a member of PRS (as I said, most songrwriters are) - so, as a member, if they strike a deal on your behalf to pay for use of your music, you go with it and wait for the paycheque. I knew about it some weeks ago, as I am also a member of PRS and they wrote to all members informing them of the deal.

Whether Prince has some individual, exclusive deal with YouTube I do not know - but I do know that as his songs are listed with PRS, the PRS deal ensures that his songs will be played and paid for.

Prince could've had all the 'worldwide exposure' YouTube offers by just letting users post his videos in the first place, or having an official Prince YouTube channel where he can get one of his underlings to post them. This was just about $$$.
