Musically, it was heaven. It seemed like every other song on the radio was either sung by or written by Prince. No one could believe how many songs that cat was involved in. The only bummer was that his videos were blah, except for maybe "When Doves Cry" and "Raspberry Beret". There were some great videos on MTV, but usually not from Prince.

I do miss the 12' records though. That was an extra 3 to 40 minutes worth of music sometimes. Those days are long gone.

There was something amazing about the 1st time you heard a new Prince single on the radio, first swallow off a new album - LRC, WDC, Paisley Park, Kiss, SOTT, Alphabet St (the fun kinda stopped after that).

Then buying the LP (!!!!), turning it over, listening to it carefully, reading the lyrics. Mindboggling, really...

I remember when a friend called me around 11:30 in the evening... "man, they dubbed me a cassette tape of the black album, it's the bomb"; the day after, I went to his house and we played that shit for hours.

Well ill be 20 soon. my dad is 40 and he was a huge prince fan,still has all the records he had when he was a teen. He told me Prince ruled the 80s. As for me,im a bigger fan then he ever was and i still get excited whenever he makes a new album or a new tv appearance. In todays time u have internet and bootlegs. Thats all i need 2 say and Ill leave it at that.

I'm old too ! I can tell you that it was a rollercoaster ride (already said that before...but i'm old, you know...) Prince was everywhere !
What was also extraordinary was the protege's records because it was always surprising, eclectic and there was a lot of them !!!! Madhouse, Sheila, Jill, Mazarati...keep on waiting for the next one...
You know, we thought that he would make a kind of revue across the country with all the other acts (like Motown did...)Can you picture this ?
Not to mention the pride hearing Roger sing about Prince and Minneapolis !!!!

As far as starting the thread is concerned, though, more specific questions and observations than more general ones. Not only is this a good rule of thumb for all kinds of writing, it also makes for a more interesting discussion board. This board has been around for a long time. A lot of stuff has already been discussed. The more specific you get, the more likely it is someone will have interesting things to share, and the better reading it is for us all.

So, try "What was it like when people were still nuts for Purple Rain, and then ATWIAD came out?"

I would love to comment, but:

A. I don't seem to remember.

B. My liver spots on my hands are starting to distract me.

3. I have to go yell at some kids that are on my lawn.

Well, I'm one of the real old timers since the old "I Wanna Be Your Lover" days in 1979. When it came to the hardest acts in R&B music, it was definately Prince and Rick James and they each had their own sets of fans who loved to down the other artist in comparison to their favorite. I personally was a huge fan of both and was very vocal that I loved them both. Yes, every year was an event waiting for each one of them trying to outdo each other with each album. Sometimes Prince outdid Rick, and sometimes Rick outdid Prince. This went on until the pop/rock fans disovered Prince and then they turned it into a Prince vs. Michael Jackson thing.

Yes, Prince was wild as hell. He did very few interviews, but when he did, he would say crazy things like he has a dog and a cat and is mating them to see what the offspring will be, or at a certain time of the day, everyone stop what they are doing and have sex. That was during the "Prince" and "Dirty Mind" era. After that, he just didn't say a damn thing to the magazines.

Back in the day when Prince was playing for "Vanity 6," during the "1999," tour, he didn't wear a shirt.

The girls were behind a pink curtain and the band was hidden. Could have been times when he was wearing nothing but boots...ya never know.
