In general...Prince's versatile style over the years...Where style is concerned...Prince has been the leader of the pack with very nice clothes...especially the tailored coats.
Last Night, I spent another lonely Christmas...Darlin' Darlin' U shoulda been there.~Prince.

You clearly weren't at the Stevie Wonder gig the day he fell out with his dressing assistant. Oh how we laughed.

Pretty sure there's a Billy Idol video out there where he's wearing something just like this, either before Prince or at the exact time of Dirty Mind.

• Change his name to an unpronounceable symbol, then create a guitar shaped like that symbol, and perform on a stage shaped like that symbol

First is a strange hard word because there is probably always some unknow/barely known person - lets say major artist.

He was the first black artist on MTV before MJ. This is FACT! Prince was on with 1999 in Dec. of 1982 and MJ was in March of 1983 if Im not mistaken on the month. However, Prince was the first. __________________________________________________

That's incorrect. Prince was not the first to have a symbol for a name. The band Freur was formed in the early 1980s in Cardiff, Wales by Hyde, Smith and Alfie Thomas. It originally had only a graphic 'squiggle' for a name. In 1983, after recruiting John Warwicker and drummer Bryn Burrows (formerly of the Fabulous Poodles), they got a recording contract with, CBS Records, and met the label's insistence on a pronounceable name, with the compromise that the squiggle was pronounced Freur.
It's also stands to note that the lower half of his symbol, when during upside down, is the symbol for Soapstone. [Edited 8/5/09 9:12am] Ernest L Sewell, IV

Pretty sure there's a Billy Idol video out there where he's wearing something just like this, either before Prince or at the exact time of Dirty Mind. Could be, and it's a loose argument. It's like saying "Who was the first musician to go shirtless on stage?" It's just a costume or outfit. If anyone was the first and trendsetting in costume apparel on stage, it was Bowie. One of the first, anyway. Even Prince's face makeup in Graffiti Bridge (Elephants and Flowers), and his outlandish outfits on the Purple Rain tour were very reminiscent of Ziggy Stardust. Either way, that is interesting about that other band. I did know that his "emblem" is the symbol for soapstone, but I always thought of it as male+female+music horn of some sort. It works

Yes, it's called "texting"... Prince invented texting. MJ was a brilliant singer/dancer...best of all time, however, that's all he was. Let's not compare him to Prince, best musician of all time, but rather, compare him to someone like Sammy Davis Jr (who I don't hear anyone calling a musical genius).

Google "alchemy symbol for soapstone", and go to Images. You get this page: http://www.navel.com/memb...age_05.htm With this symbol:
Also, there's this: http://www.didyouknow.org...symbol.htm Long before Prince became the artist known by a symbol, English poets signed their work with a symbol. In fact, only two Old English poets are known by name, Cynewulf and Caedmon.
Old English differed greatly from the English of today, it basically resembled modern German. In the 7th Century, an unlearned cowherd, Caedmon wrote some of the first English poems, of which only 9 lines survived. The second known poet Cynewulf, of the 8th century, also signed his work with a symbol. Cynewulf used a kind of cypher, or anagram, made up of ancient figures called runes, an alphabet used by early Germanic tribes preceding the use of the Roman alphabet in England. The artist previously known as Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson on 7 June 1958 in Minneapolis. On his 35th birthday, he announced that he would change his name to an unpronounceable symbol. The glyph incorporates the male and female signs along with the alchemy symbol for soapstone. In May 2000, he announced that he is again to be known as "Prince." I like the symbol, and always have. I had it stenciled in my apartment (along with a symbol I was using as my own at the time) back in 1993/4. Lotta fun back then. But I just wanted to state he wasn't the first w/ a symbol idea, and the symbol wasn't all his anyway. Sure, he might have put the male and female thing together, but he obviously took the soapstone symbol and used it as his "name". Ernest L Sewell, IV

Ya know, I thought that Prince was the father of the ass-less pants until I watched The Decline of Western Civilization Part II - The Metal Years (1988) again recently. This lead singer Randy O for the hair band Odin was wearing butt-less britches during the groups performance in the movie. Purple Fact #542: Prince can make a Weeble™ fall down.
