Dood, why do U like to ask such oriented questions? Like "Is Insatiable the best Prince song of the 90s" or this one... Just ask "What is Ur best prince song of the 90"? or "What is Prince best album"..

Back to the topic, though I think "1999" is a pretty good album, I wont call it the best album... Sometimes it goes too far on the typical 80s synthpop field, and it sounds sometimes dated... "Dirty mind", "Sing O The Times" or even "Controversy" are better albums... but I still don't get why people love "Parade" and "Lovesexy" that much rolleyes ... They're just average, to me ...
Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves.

1999 is a great album, i do think sum of it sounds very 80s- delirious, and lets pretend were married. Again, its not the best, purple rain and sign of the times were better. Did I read right that u have to sound like Prince with all the screams? no one can top the scream sounds in Something in the Water. Good Luck!

ditto. 1999 is definitely one of P's bests, it is the minneapolis sound at it's pinnacle. the way the songs are constructed really shows just how genius of a composer P is.

Everyone has an "opinion" on what Prince's best album was. There is no definitive answer, never will be!!! To each his own.

You're wrong about the best album (SOTT) and the number of "dics" (one on the cover).
"What kind of fuck ending is that?"

Well put. Make sure you get all the brilliant B-Sides (Irresistable Bitch, Horny Toad, How Come U Don't Call Me) and remixes from this masterpiece! Also hunt down, the S&M video for Automatic.

the b-sides are definitlely worth hunting down, they take on their own forms. the Automatic video was definitely a sight worth seeing. the way Jill and Lisa get to whippin' him...

I think it's his third best album after Purple Rain and Sign O The Times. 1999 was the first album that showed his diverse potential in full.

FunkDr

Frenchguy - bonjour - "sometimes it goes too far on the typical '80s synthpop field" - this was released in '82 - Prince was one of the earliest and most innovative users of synths - so I don't feel the sounds were "typical" when the record was first released.

If they now sound typical to you, perhaps that is because P's use and style with synths was subsequently very influential - which only adds to the case of this being a truly great album.

Having grown up in the '80s, whilst the use of synths became very popular, I always felt that Prince managed to get a different sound from them - rather than sounding techno/cyber like (although he did do this too - e.g. Something in the Water..) he also seemed to achieve a "human-like" quality from them - giving them some sort of characteristic/feeling.

SOTT, in my opinion, is still his best though !

My first ever Prince album touched
It has aged amazingly well imo.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!
