MTV Revisits Purple Rain for the 25th Anniversary

http://www.mtv.com/movies...tory.jhtml

Eddie Murphy showed up sporting a leopard-print blazer, a bare chest and a leather bandana tied around his neck. Pee-wee Herman drove up in a hot-rod-flamed clown car and busted into a nasally version of "When Doves Cry." And Prince himself — his "royal badness," as the VJ Mark Goodman declared — arrived in a purple stretch limo and, flanked by beefy bodyguards, sashayed down the carpet carrying a single rose.

Nice article and a good gateway to all things Purple Rain on their site.

So, we're a little late, but how about sharing your memories of the premiere?
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

I remember being on vacation with my family in Wildwood NJ the night it aired. I didn't even want to go the shore or amusement park that night because I was afraid I would miss the premeire party.

I knew P had definetly crossed over with all of the big names that arrived at the party that night. I couldn't wait to see the movie after the program ended. P was on a whole new level.

Folks wanted to know did he eat?, did he really talk like that?.., was his life was that dark and brooding?.., was he banging Apples and Sheena Easton and Shelia E?..etc. He built up a huge mystique.

I truly hated and loathed the 1980's. The worst decade ever for me personally..but that time in 1984 (& being a P fan)RULED.

I live in a place called Columbia,Tennessee, which is called the Mule Capital of the World. The day Purple Rain was released to the general public I was asked by my sister to go with her to the movies because her boyfriend was out of town. I asked what are we going to see and she said Purple Rain.

I yelled ," I don't want to see PRINCE". She said that she was paying so I hopped in the car to go. We got there about 45 minutes before the movie started and there was a line. I thought some other movie was commanding the attention until we got to the booth and after we bought our tickets the showing for the 7:00pm Purple Rain was SOLD OUT.This was about 6:40ish. I was like damn this is going to be some shit here.

Anyway people were sitting on the floor and in people's laps. We got two seats in the middle isle and it was a electric buzz going throughout the auditorium. Then Dumm duh dummm... ladies and gentlemen the Revolution.

The crowd exploded and I thought I was at a concert people were dancing and jumping up and down. Girls were crying .

WTF is going on????

This lasted the whole movie .

At the end when Purple Rain was playing the whole theater was singing in unison. I was so stunned .It was the most incredible experence that I ever had at a movie. I saw Purple Rain 4 times that weekend.

If you are under 30 and missed this it was just simply incredible.

I was underaged and definitely made it to the premier in Canton, MI. Went several more times in Wayne, MI, that weekend, I don't know how I got my Mom to take me. And to add insult to inury my sister who was 18 took me and my little brother who was all of 7. I should be embarrassed, but he loved it!!!

Is that Greazy Meal's "In and Out" at 26 seconds into the MTV video? It sounds like The Meal, if you ask me.

And I am a greazy motherfucker. Heh.

1:29 -- another Greazy Meal joint -- Beat, from "Gravy."

Wasn't MTV or VH1 planning on featuring Greazy Meal a few years back as one of the greatest unsigned bands? I'm surprised Kurt Loder and MTV used Greazy Meal's songs in this 2-minute clip. Way to go MTV!

In light of the it being 25 years old I’ve recently been watching my 20th Anniversary Purple Rain DVD.
Does anyone know why the scene on Disc 2, during the MTV Premier Party Section at (4.20s) was not in any versions of the film I’ve seen?
I ask this because there is a clip of prince fighting with a man in the warehouse where Vanity are rehearsing, he punches the guy as he is being bundled out of the building.

Hi, I love watching the disc 2 of that set.... great stuff.

Those scenes were the cut scenes that didn't make it.
The first was Prince fighting with Jellybean Johnson during the Time / Apollonia 6 rehersal. Vanit was not in this picture.
(The actually did another fight scene in Graffiti Bridge)
There are other scenes cut like Morris and Apples running across the front lawn of P's house ( I think), and the famous barn / love scene of P and Apples ( that I so wanted to see). Probably more but we'll never see them sad

It is a royal shame... MTV is total CRAP now. Whoever their program director and board of directors currently are, M stands for MUSIC you FREAKING idiots!

I knew when they got bought out the end was neigh... Madonna, a slew of performers that were helped by it back when and the original folks who put it together should pool their money/buy it out and return it to a music format to ensure the future of music on television.

In the meantime... We have this awesome thing called YOUTUBE and Myspace and like 1,000 other things that have taken it's place, so there's lots of new music and independent stuff happening if you know where to look!

xxx
