Alphabet St. (This Is Not Music This Is A Trip) Appreciation Just had this up loud in the car on the way to work this morning. Absolutely loving it (as I always have).
Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

I think Alphabet street is superior, but I always thought he got the title from 'Sesame street', I'm no sure why I felt that way.

I wish this was on The Hits/The B-Sides set. I also like "Escape", which has the same extended/mashedup/tweaked feel. Ernest L Sewell, IV

Yeah ernest, there were a few essential b-sides missing. I was also hoping it would be on Disc 2 of Ultimate but alas... Just somewhere in the middle,

[Edited 7/24/09 7:55am] That because Prince had his fingers in the pot, and it's why "Erotic City" wasn't on there. It's why the songs are in A side/B side configuration instead of chronological like it was intended. It's why I've said before it will take Prince dying before we REALLY see the stuff we want, as fans, released, remastered, or whatever. Ernest L Sewell, IV

It's like an instrumental mix but extended and tweaked and mad and distorted. Love the extra fuzzy guitar embellishments and extra keyboard motifs throughout. It's always had an infectious beat and rhythm guitar but the lyrics were IMHO not as impressive as the music (obviously they were simplistic for a reason and it is a near perfect pop song in it's single edit form) so it does work better without them. One question though, I don't think I've ever got the background lyric quite right, Is it "Put your love down baby when your money gets shot" or something close to that? Anyone else like this mix? [Edited 7/24/09 1:40am] That's what I've always heard.

I thought the lyric was "Put your love down baby or you're gonna get shot."

Many people actually hate the video, think it looks super tacky. I remember reading in one of the books that he had the idea spontaneously on a weekend, and rounded up a crew last minute to shoot it, which is why it looks kind of dodgy. Personally, I love the clip, it's one of my favourite songs, the mood it creates is so happy and sublime. IMO he does the tune a disservice when he performs it live now, because the super-cool drum groove is replaced by his standard four-on-the-floor party beat. Makes it more of a jam, weakens the awesomness of the composition. "Maybe the cartridge U was playin'

Love this version, but I haven't heard it in years! Wish I could listen to my vinyl - I don't have a digi copy. KeithyT said: One question though, I don't think I've ever got the background lyric quite right, Is it "Put your love down baby when your money gets shot" or something close to that?
I always thought he said "put your mouth down baby, when your money gets shot". Like, some sorta reverse-twist on "put your money where your mouth is"?
