I know we've talked about UTCM a BILLION times here.

But I watched it again last night for the 71st time (no lie), and I enjoyed it just as much as ever.

I'd just like to know why you think the critics hated it so much.

I read one review that said "If you don't like Prince, stay away. If you do like Prince... stay away!"

I'll never forget reading that.

Another review said the movie was like a cross between a Fred Astaire movie and a perfume commercial! lol Okay... fine. Whatever! lol

True, the acting wasn't great. Mary had some acting faux pas, and so did Tricky... but I thought Prince was fine... other than him lying down in that wack position after getting shot!

I just want some BAD opinions... 'cause honestly, I don't see why it was hated on so much in the media!

ha ha! I love this movie.

It probably would have received better reviews as a "made for tv" movie. However, box office mojo states the movie made $10 million domestically. I am surprised that it made that much.

Well for starters, Prince only sings half a song in it.

I actually liked the movie and I think it got panned because everyone wanted Purple Rain 2. He wasn't playing the role of Prince/The Kid in it and therefore he wasn't singing all the time like in Purple Rain. Also he directed it which in Hollywood is a big problem with the industry. They don't like it when they're cut out of thee process. If he hired some known director they probably would've been kinder to him in the press. When Purple Rain started making money Hollywood jumped on the Prince bandwagon so fast they caught whiplash. Everyone was on his d*ck and then he went and made another movie without Hollywood input.

I guess I understand, but I just never considered it as bad as the critics say it is.

the writing, the casting, the direction, the acting... i mean, those are the USUAL reasons, and UTCM in particular, had so many more...

UTCM is one of my favorite movies. I don't know or care why anyone else didn't like it.

There are a lot of people who like this movie, and I find myself enjoying it when I am in the right mood. but to answer the OP, it bombed because it wasn't "Purple Rain 2".

Ain't a damn thing wrong with this film. I'd watch it any day over Purple Rain.

It is a silly film, but lots of fun too. And he looks great in that white coat!

It got panned because it sucked ass. Hell Purple Rain was only worth watching cause of the performances and UTCM lacked even that. All on all it was an overacted, silly, clueless, mess of a movie. Even Prince distances from it cause he knows it sucked.

As of last night, I've seen this movie 71 times all the way through. I know it has it's serious flaws, but it's no where near as bad as the critics say.

I might think it was "Zoolander" bad, if anyone other than Prince starred in it... so I understand the criticisms... but it's Prince at his most fun.

It is shit by film standards, but enjoyable for prince fans. i've seen it countless times, and i've got a lot of good memories attached to it, but I can recognise that its essentially crap.

Graffiti Bridge, however, is arse even for the majority of Prince fans, and is only of value to those who like looking at Prince. (admittedly, several hundred orgers...)

He cut the director or at the least limited his role. That pissed a lot of people off.

Another thing is that Prince was in one of the few movies since the late 60's that showed a Black man kissing a White woman on film. The only movies that I can think of that did that were some Jim Brown type Blaxpoiation movies. That was major and if you think it was bad for Prince it messed up the girl who played his love interest. She eventually was nominated for an Academy Award and I really hadn't seen her in anything after UTCM.

I remember reading that Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts when they played in THe Pelican Brief had to have their parts re-written because the book portrayed them as lovers and they both feared a backlash if this was done on film.Roberts was actually pissed that this happened and Denzel told her that if she even kissed him on film it would destroy her career. Sad but true.

The movie is not as bad as some would say but I have sat through horrible movies that critics said were good like.

I think if he had added more music scenes, it would've been better received. I also think WB could've made it somewhat successful by showing more music scenes in the trailers and gotten people out to the theaters, regardless of the reviews.
But the critics had a field day with this one. They kicked it as hard as they could, cuz no one saw it. They went too far with it, but that how Hollywood is. They like to prop you up high, and then see you fall just as hard.
