Strange version of Purple Rain (watch!)

Swedish band Larz-Kristerz performed Purple Rain on a Swedish tv show last Tuesday. Larz-Kristerz plays music in a genre called "dansband" (literally: dance band) that is popular in Sweden especially among middle-aged and older people. They performed the song with that kind of sound.

I think they made a bad version. Prince's original version has a profound sound. They killed that vibe by using a typical and inappropriate upbeat dansband tempo and the guy sings without passion. The only slightly ok thing is the way the woman - artist Pauline - sings the second verse.

Yes it's awful, but it just shows that the fundamental underlying structure of Prince's breakthrough crossover hits had a country rock basis, hidden under the linn drums and screams was a very 'white' sound that he knew would attract a new audience (Germans and Scandinavians for example!). Little Red Corvette and Take Me With U come to mind.

Honky tonk Purple Rain! Well, I think he's kinda country sometimes anyway.

He should have tried out for that country show that Sheila E just won, Gone Country.

I did hear a bluegrass version of Take Me With U once and I really liked it. I'm not a country fan per se (a good song is a good song) but bluegrass moves me for some reason!
