I think it's been pretty well documented that the song was written for Kristin Scott Thomas, his co-star in Cherry Moon.

He met her at the some film awards (Oscars?/Cannes?) and she said to prince something to the effect of 'you haven't changed, but i've got old looking'. To which prince wrote the song.
