Prince to play 2 shows at Montreux CONFIRMED

http://www.drfunkenberry.com/2009/06/30/prince-will-be-performing-2-shows-at-the-montreux-jazz-festival/

The Montreux Jazz Festival is going to be a little bit more funky this year as a musical genius is planning on taking the stage not once, but twice.

The one and only Prince WILL be performing 2 shows at Montreux this year and he is bringing a musically talented band with him. Playing with Prince at the legendary festival will be Rhonda Smith, Renato Neto, and John Blackwell.

In his 31 years in music, Prince has won every award imaginable from a Grammy to an Oscar to one of the youngest inductees ever into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. He performed at the 2007 Super Bowl in the rain no less and still gave off the performance of a lifetime.

In 2007, Prince gave a legendary performance at The Montreux Jazz Festival where tickets sold out in record time. So when ticket information and tickets become available this time, make sure to reserve your spot if you plan to attend.-Dr.FB

This is interesting...

We just got word that Prince has rehearsed the 3 players: John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith and Renato Neto for 2 weeks now and taught them new and old material alike as well as a few covers. Sounds cool.

Prince is using a smaller crew these days to allow space for the audience to properly hear his favorite players right now.

We are being told that Prince will, of course be featured on guitar throughout the concert but mainly this year his goal is to showcase his sometimes overlooked vocal abilities.

Hence the stripped down vibe of this crew.

As shown on his most recent performance on the Tonight Show, Prince feels he is improving as a vocalist and has taken the time to re-work arrangements to showcase his gift.

Some tunes will just feature Renato on piano and Prince on vocals. He is Prince’s favorite pianist and as a fan of his work, it’s a treat for him just listening to Renato every night without any audible distraction.

Prince has also been listening alot to new jazz star Esperanza Spalding. He attended her concert in St. Paul, Minnesota recently and she and her impressive band came over to Prince’s Paisley Park Studio for a tour and jam session that lasted til sunrise. Now that’s hot! He loves to play with her and always teases he will join her band one day when he’s good enough. Ha! BTW, she is a must see if you ever y’ll get the chance.

In addition to Esperanza, Prince is a big fan of Ana Moura. Her command of an audience is very impressive. She has a strong voice that radiates sensuality. Accompanied by 3 musicians when Prince saw her, Ana was a template as well as Esperanza for Prince’s new approach to performance.

Awesome news. Let’s hope this concert makes it’s way to the United States soon!-Dr.FB

?????

First it was three shows in impossible venues, with 35mm cameras which were talked into HD, then it was back to one show with a `cuisine`setup and now it is back to two shows again?
Whatever.
I explained already that he has lost all contact with the real world and sense with his fans: Why make it all so LATE!? The whole festival has been on sale for weeks.
But Prince has to be renegotiating his CONtract to CONserve whatever CONspicuous terms to gain more CONtrol, Over and over.

What is the truth in the new rumour?

^Montreux 2007 was announced fairly late in the day too if I remember correctly. and he's announced stuff much later than this before. It's a small (but reputable) festival; I doubt there are many tickets, and it will sell out regardless.

but speaking about madness, why isn't this up on LF.com? Are they peeved off that none of us have bought the Opus?

Been pretty quiet in Princeworld recently, so this is good news. I really enjoyed the recent Leno performance, so if this is the kind of show Montreux is in for, it should be amazing. Prince, Rhonda, John and Renato have great chemistry.

Still a shame he didn't utilise his website to announce this.

Not taking anything away from the Good DrFB, just out of curiosity...if this is not yet up on the Montreux website (or LF...well who knows if it'll ever be up there), is this REALLY confirmed yet?

IMHO, this is not necessarily a wonderful thing. I go to a Prince concert to see Prince do his thing, not hear his favorite players.

HOWEVER, this group of musicians with him just happens to be my favorite line up so that is wonderful.

IMHO, it would appear that Prince is trying to spin something. There is certainly someone here that can put it into words better than I. He's had the minimalistic stage for years. He's been showcasing his lineup for years. He's playing guitar, yes. He's showcasing his vocals, wonderful. He's stripping down the vibe and stage, okay.

He's bringing it down a notch. Still.

Instead of just embracing that, he's spinning it (again IMHO). Hype, hype, hype.

He's a wonderful performer. The hype is, for me, somewhat insulting to himself and me.

Possibly....but so are you.

Of course Montreux is not your standard festival, and I know it runs much longer than many other festivals. But the promotion of any artist at any festival surely is up to the festival and not the artist himself - right?

Rumours are all that.

Yeah, I mean like dancing plus almost 3 hour shows that are now lucky to push 1 hour 40/50 min.

You're preaching to the choir about Prince acting normal about his business dealings there lol It's not something I endorse, but realistically speaking, I expect flat out flakiness.

I totally consider off-stage charisma. Prince's business dealings, since I am a fan I will speak specifically of his dealings with his fans, leave plenty to be desired.

He's lost "it" was just rather broad. Prince is definately a mixed bag and lately the bag is filled with more and more pencil shavings.

More Info On Prince & Montreux
Posted in Celebrity News, Entertainment, Music on July 1st, 2009 by drfunkenberry

Drfunkenberry.com Exclusive Photo Of Prince

We just got word that Prince has rehearsed the 3 players: John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith and Renato Neto for 2 weeks now and taught them new and old material alike as well as a few covers. Sounds cool.

Prince is using a smaller crew these days to allow space for the audience to properly hear his favorite players right now.

We are being told that Prince will, of course be featured on guitar throughout the concert but mainly this year his goal is to showcase his sometimes overlooked vocal abilities. eek eek eek

Europe Tour ?? biggrin

Physical situations aside, at some point soon P is going to have to make a transition to a more age appropriate type of music. Singing the sexy bedroom stuff much past 50 will start to look a bit silly. It was painful to see JB singing the same stuff in his final days. P should not go down that same road.

What better place than a JAZZ festival to introduce his new more mature sound? Funky jazz seems to be the obvious direction.

I'm just thinking out loud here about how I'd like to see it go down.

First performance- what everyone might expect. Second performance- a killer jazz funk set that sets the tone for his future sound and then as time goes on more and more of the funky jazz and less and less of Little Red Corvette stuff.

Calm down dear, have a smoke and a pancake.

It's great that Prince is bringing a tight version of a well liked band to play a gig like this. If he chooses to play an MJ tribute then cool but that's his choice. I'm just happy to reflect and appreciate the man at the moment for what he is.

So wait a minute. Montreux is in Canada now. And they speak Swiss German in Montreal. Montreal isn't in Switzerland, it moved to Canada with all the French speakers. Montreux is next door to Montreal. Except they're on different continents. The main thing to understand, then, is that Canada is part of America now. Ah, this makes perfect sense.

He will play, last time it was announced on the 4th of July...first day of the Festival....

Relax man, it has been like this most of the time with confirmations...it fuels the hype...nothing more nothing less...

And he is alive...so there is a chance for more concerts...

Prince or no Prince, theres no way im going to anything thats not been completely confirmed by him or his ppl its all a bit fuzzy or then he announces days before he actually performing all that is silly. to be quite honest i rather go to my lovebox weekender on that day seems more fun and something that has been arranged properly, booked tickets with there acts comfirmed months ago on there website and other outlets. there is no maybe's or guessing games.

Well, good luck to all the ppl that do go. hope he turns up.

Are we beginning to see a "geriatric Prince"?

anybody from the uk thinking of going?

It seems a horid thing to say; but I can only go if my MJ tickets are refunded. I hope if I do get to go, Prince pays some sort of homage since the gigs would have aready started.

Why would he have to pay homage?
MJ is by then buried.
The quarreling over the heritage has just started.
What part does Prince have in there? And why P?

(just an open question...)

on the musicology tour, prince paid homage 2 both rick james and ray charles when they passed on.

when james brown passed, prince acknowledge him in vegas

so prince paying homage to Michael wouldn't b a total surprise, he's already done "don't stop til u get enough" with tamar and has done billie jean during a soundcheck in australia in 2003

He will play, last time it was announced on the 4th of July...first day of the Festival....

It's the 2nd of July now.
So what do you mean?
It was announced last year?
Last time he played? (2007)
And even if it was that way that still doesn't make it right.

Relax man, it has been like this most of the time with confirmations...it fuels the hype...nothing more nothing less...

And he is alive...so there is a chance for more concerts...

If it has been this way, it still does not make it right.
How many times do I have to repeat this until `it` lands?
And BTW, I am relaxed. Really. Why do people think I am not when I am making my point extra extra clear?

sorry i dont understand your last comment what country is not named - you lost me there!

if you read your second link carefully you will find this "America may be ambiguous in English, as it is more commonly used to refer to the United States of America.[3] "

I have never seen any one for any purpose EVER say 'canada you know in america' or until today see it written 'Canada (america)' as if one and the same. the poster was incorrect.

On the lotusflow3r album.

The jazz feel at the LA lateshow with Renato/Rhonda/John was great at the start, and lost something by the end with Prince's dissatisfaction and all, but one could notice he wanted the vocals out front with the stool, stage setup, etc.THAT TRIO backing Mr.Nelson at a top shelf jazz show has great possibilities.

Its been "confirmed" by Prince's people evidently, else Funkenberry wouldn't have gotten the story.

Claude Nobs has also talked about Prince just today in Le Matin, talking about Prince asking him to return, but he declined to give any more specifics (most likely because there may be details of the contract that havent been ironed out yet).

I WISH THIS JAZZ FEST WAS IN CANADA, NOT ALL THE WAY IN SWITZERLAND! Canada I could do, and feel comfortable booking a room last minute. I wouldnt be crushed going to Canada, or broke if the show were to be cancelled for whatever reason... but the hassle of flying from US to Switzerland, trying to get a room in area that looked like not many places available close to site to begin with (looked at map when first heard the rumors and it looks like only few hotels close w/ no idea of how hard it is to get around in a place that will suddenly be crowded w/ people many who will be as clueless as me, if I were to go, on where to go...)

I hope the DrFunkeberry plea to bring this band/show to US is a hint of what P is planning! I would love to see this band! And, I am very excited at the prospect of songs w/ piano and P vocals only! Why the F... am I not a millionare?

I HAVE NO SHAME IN MAKING A PUBLIC PLEA... NO, I AM BEGGING P TO BRING THIS BAND AND SET TO THE US! Of course, I would be happy w/ a dvd of the Montreaux show, but we all know nothing compares to a live show- especially if P is going to be focusing on vocals. The man has a voice that sends chills down my spine- a true gift.

to the people who are going: have fun!

That said, let me say that Prince is a real asshole for not touring the continent! Since 2002 all he did was Montreux 2007 and the O2 shows, having fans obligated to travel and driving them to having extensive costs to see him perform! It sucks! Yay to bands like U2, or even Coldplay (who suck, IMO) for taking the effort to tour around the world after almost each new album, enabling all fans to see them perform!

Yes.
Don't you see a pattern?
Longer breaks in between tours?
And perhaps not yet a trend but some points do appear: doing a 'tour' of shows in one spot (Vegas, O2, ...).
In other words: Hoe does not attach a 'proper' 'classic' (world)tour to each album. He tours less often.

« Le Montreux Jazz Festival sera encore plus funky cette année puisqu’un musicien de génie va se produire non pas une, mais deux fois.
L’unique Prince jouera lors de deux concerts à Montreux cette année, accompagné d’un groupe talentueux. Dans le cadre du légendaire Festival, Prince sera en effet sur scène avec Rhonda Smith, Renato Net et John Blackwell.

I'm sure I read that 2. Now Folklore. A bit like "presale" flyingpig

Lotusflow3r.com: The lotus (Sanskrit & Tibetan = padma) is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols and one of the most poignant representations of Buddhist teaching.
The roots of a lotus are in the mud, the stem grows up through the water, and the heavily scented flower lies pristinely above the water, basking in the sunlight.
This pattern of growth signifies the progress of the soul from the primeval mud of materialism, through the waters of experience, and into the bright sunshine of enlightenment.

On the phone with ticket corner they confirmed that there was something unexpected this morning...

They also say that tickets for the first concert was supposed to be only on sale on the internet and the second one in shops (and also on internet ?). I can't say that it's 100 % sure as it was a kind of panic there with a lot of phone calls... Anyway, the information can be useful.

Also one more useful info that I'm not sure it wasn't posted : there is a limit of 2 tickets for each show.

Ok, thanks very much for the info Jazzon, gonna hope for the best at 1pm!

Ticketcorner Hotline says that the tickets for the first show that went on sale on their website this morning by accident will be invalidated.
So everyboday who bought tickets this morning - U better grab some again at 2pm.
For the others (like me) maybe there is still a chance...

As it now appears you need a separate ticket for each show - so how can you guarantee you'll be able to get a ticket for both shows? I'm gonna go if I can get tix for both shows - if I get tix for one, it'll be up for sale as soon as is possible!

And perhaps someone should tell Prince's official site that news and ticket offers should be available on there!!! So far my $77 has been used to download one song not available on the Lotusflower CDs...

I called them again and pretended I had a friend in switzerland whou bought me a ticket this morning. They again said, that those tickets were invalid and I should buy a new ticket at 2 pm. They asked me 2 inform my friend that he needs a new ticket but couldn't tell me how and when they would inform him officially...

I ordered early. 4 tickets. No problemo.
Then there's the `fix` and we wait until 14:00 and we hear about cancelling the early tickets.
Then it is 14:00 and I can order 2*2 tickets easily with still the 4 early tickets in my order history....

That's the main problem ! They will have to make the venue empty between the two shows. And it's the baddest place to do this as there's only one stairs to go in or out. Plus, for those who attended two years ago they could realize that it was one of the worst organization around.

So I will write an e-mail this week to say that I'm concerned about how they will manage people who have tickets for both shows. I have the feeling that they haven't thought about this and I don't want to be put at the end of the second line while coming back from the first show.

I'm encouraging everybody to drop a line to the organization about their concern regarding this issue which is actually a concern regarding how people who have paid 400 CHF for an evening in the festival will be treated.

Trying to be funny? Ironic? I love MJ. But, to hold his carved face up, vs. Prince's photoshopped image, as evidence that his is "happy with (his true self)" is laughable. Most celebrities have airbrushed/touched up pics in magazines and promos. A handful take the drastic measures that Michael did to alter their image.

1. I always bold my type. Sorry if you don't like it. I do it so it's easier for me to read.

2. Speaking of easy to read...re-read what I typed.

I wasn't getting emotional about MJ at all. I was pointing out the irony of your statement. I wasn't defending MJ, I was commenting on the fact that MJ was never comfortable with his appearance... look at the evolution of his face.

Anyways, thanks for leaping to judgement and making a sideways comment about Tuesday. It's one thing to get snarky about internet comments..it's a bit more to misread something and then get an attitude about it. You are friendly.

I am not a member of the Apathetic Generation or the Let It Go cult.
If you think that stating the obvious as response to the obvious is reason enough to call that nagging, bitching, moaning...
And the 24/7 thing: Jealous? cool

We only have to wait and see how ticketcorner will behave when they get their act together.

You did not even grab half of what I wrote. Typical for that generation I mentioned.
Because if Prince would have his act together this would not have happened.

Now ticketcorner issued tickets for two events per concert (must be because the ticket limit was 2 per show/card/address/account and people could get double that); they did not communicate nor correct stuff in time when they discovered their errors.
And in time is before 14:00 hours CEST 4-jul-2009 here.
So that is what I mean with what we might see happen on monday.
Really nice...

See the 'original post'.
That was obvious and I pointed it out.
Only after that the ignorance accusations you throw around became true. But not from me, since otehrs did the 'yadda yadda' thing, which leads to pure self-inflicted ignorance.

What I pointed out is not so obvious since one would have to have been there and seen what went on.
I.e.: it is not a Crystal Ball type debacle that hits everyone.
But it still is an issue that shows certain qualities, effects of decisions, etc from the event promotor/prince/whoever.

I'll clarify my original post and then let's let it be done. Basically, I was saying that it was ironic and/or humorous for you to mention MJ as being cool with how he looks...because he carved his face to hell, yet doesn't bother with a photoshop touch up. That's all. I wasn't being defensive of Michael Jackson. If anything, I was suggesting that I'd think a retouching via photoshop would be more preferable to a hatchet nose job. Make sense?

Somehow, I think you misread me as being way emotional/defensive about Michael Jackson. I wasn't defending him at all.

Prince sells out in eight minutes at Montreux Festival
July 5, 2009 - 3:39AM

More than 7,000 tickets for two concerts by Prince at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland later this month sold out within eight minutes of going on sale Saturday, the organisers said.

Despite prices ranging between 195 Swiss francs for standing room and 480 francs (442 US dollars, 316 euros) for a seat, and a two ticket per person limit, the shows were fully booked within seven minutes and 58 seconds.

Prince is due to play two consecutive concerts on July 18, the closing night of the lakeside festival.

The multiple Grammy award and Oscar winner's appearance at Montreux was only announced on Friday, the opening night, following weeks of rumours.

Two years ago, 4,500 Prince tickets were sold in 10 minutes, then a record for the western Swiss festival which is commonly nine-tenths booked by the time it starts each summer.

The 95 paying concerts over the next two weeks include Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, Black Eyed Peas, Alice Cooper, Steve Winwood, Monty Alexander, Lily Allen, Wyclef Jean, Marianne Faithfull, John Fogerty, Grace Jones and B.B. King among an eclectic host of top billings.

Indeed, some ticket orders were cancelled today! That's what some people have found out this morning.
It doesn't have to to with the 8 o'clock a.m. thing, it's when one name (creditcard) has more than 2 orders per concert (so orders at 2pm have also been cancelled).

That REALLY makes them ticketcorners suck heavily.
They have no control over their sales process: early open, no limit on orders, manual deletion (!) afterwards, no real direction (if they had numbered the 14:00 presale diferently they could cancel the other event), no communication and thus no quality.
Everyone knows that error control is 80% of code, so they are only in it for the money and are not geared at handling the smallest of mistakes.
Sigh.

Montreux could ask for exclusivity, and for him it could be to little pay:

Well, its one for the money,
Two for the show,
Three to get ready,
Now go, cat, go.

We did not receive an email about the cancellation, the two last bookings were just removed from the list " show all orders ". And when I tried to acces the tickets throught the confirmation email, it says status: cancelled. And the tickets are gone as well the amount of the two tickets. Keep us informed!

More often than not, there is an aftershow following one-off gigs. That doesn't mean there will be, but... Prince likes to stretch out during these informal sets when he does them.

Aftershows are usually announced at the last minute, so if you go to the show, do some preemptive networking.

to the people who are going: have fun!

Maybe it's hard to tour with a bum hip.

Prince jazz gala tickets sell out

Prince last appeared at the Swiss event in 2007
Some 7,000 tickets for two Prince concerts at the Montreux Jazz Festival have been snapped up eight minutes after going on sale, say organisers.

Demand was high for the gigs on 18 July, despite tickets for standing room only being priced at 195 Swiss Francs (£111).

The musician's appearance at the gala was only confirmed last week.

He performed at Montreux, Switzerland in 2007, when 4,500 concert tickets were sold out within 10 minutes.

Ticket limit

Other performers due to play a series of concerts at the festival include the Black Eyed Peas, Grace Jones and Marianne Faithfull.

Wyclef Jean, who is standing in for former Fugees bandmate Lauryn Hill after she cancelled her European tour, will also appear.

The festival got under way at the end of last week, and will also feature Herbie Hancock making his 30th Montreux appearance.

Tickets for a seat at one of Prince's consecutive two concerts cost 480 Swiss Francs (£273), while a two ticket limit per person was imposed.

god damn, I only got confirmation for 1 show because of this shit

my latest news on this: after speaking with a dozen call center agents (yes, been seriously stalking ticketcorner from amsterdam, hehe) over the last 2 days, today at 2pm got a guy saying that is was 90% sure my '9am' tix will be valid. At 4.30pm another guy said, after checking with collegues about 4 times, that is was 300% sure the 9am tix is valid. My '2pm' tix have been cancelled today, but now it looks like I'm going to Montreux after all...but still can't believe it...

My 7:08 AM tickets are gone and I very seriously dislike the lack of communication from this 'company' about this. This is their friggin' core business and they aren't even good at it. If I can shoot holes in their processes, what will a pro do?

Yay to bands like U2, or even Coldplay (who suck, IMO) for taking the effort to tour around the world after almost each new album, enabling all fans to see them perform!

Care to share some context?
He hasn't played a show over here since 2007.
It's only a small room.
Not a 20.000 people ice-skate rink which he'll play a few times over the weekend.
Not part of a tour where he'll come closer to the people anyway.
So it's most of Europe's active, hardcore fans in that small room... (who can still afford this during a U$A-rooted cri$i$)

The aftershow for this gig will probably be historic, considering the main sets are to be a laid back affair.

Someone please pay off the soundboard guy for access to a jack.

how big is the change there will be after show after the two sets, of which the second one will probably end at 1 AM or something? and if so...where will it be?

I doubt there'll be an aftershow as the 2nd concert starts at midnight (if he's on time)-ish, so that can go on til 2.30-3... by the time gear and people have moved, it won't start til 5 or 6... however this would be very good as I have until half 1 sunday afternoon until my flight back to London without a hotel room to wait...

Nonsense.
Whether he is at home or doing an aftershow, his day/night rhythm won't be like mine. So don't make him look like Michael with the painkiller nonsense since he'd have to use them at home as well.
Travelling in beyond average vehicles is not so bad compared to work that many of us have to do to get by.

I don't fancy a bite of any Irishman at all. Wolfy always claims to know prince tours beforehand. So If a tour will start, sure there will be a thread from him telling us he already told us.

I think he's going to have a lie-in, enjoy a nice kipper breakfast, take a trip to the Suchard chocolate factory, buy some Swiss cheese with the holes in, get a new cowbell for recording embellishments, buy a swiss army knife with toothpick feature, then catch his flight home.

In the O2 even cellphones with camera had to be handed over.

I don't think that's strictly true, that was not my experience at any rate and loads of people took photos with their mobile phones at the 21 Nights concerts. I even saw one guy 2 rows back from me film the whole concert on a handheld camcorder! The Indigo aftershows were a bit more strict and I think security definitely made a bee-line for anyone holding up cameras and camera-phones, probably even confiscated a few.

I'm not saying that all were handed over. But i am pretty sure that the second show i attended there was mentioning of phones with cameras not being allowed. In the O2 it was easy for them to shine sith torches on to people with camera's. they where really thight in there.

ONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL

«In A Large Room With No Light» mêle soul, jazz et funk.

Artiste perfectionniste
