I've just had the misfortune of listening 2 this disc and it contains some of the worst covers I've ever heard and I'm not just talking Prince covers. "I Would Die 4 U" is criminally, horribly and unforgivably bad. Every song sounds like it was recorded with cheap Casio keyboards and "When Doves Cry" with Apollonia sounds like it was done by a pub band.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. I can't even say this album has a certain humour value 2 it, cuz it doesn't, it's just piss poor and cringe worthy.

Call me cynical if U want but wait till U hear it.

Yup. I was quite looking forward to this, but am up to Computer Blue and so far am very disappointed. But could there ever be a 'good' tribute to Purple Rain? I dunno. I wonder now what I was expecting, because if it's too like the original songs I might as well listen to the original album, but if it's too far away then the songs aren't there anymore.

The cheap keyboard-trying-to-be-cutting-edge thing really grates though. It's as if the emphasis is on the sound rather than the song.

Get over yourself. The only truly cringe-worthy track is Let's Go Crazy. The rest are all interesting enough. You don't listen to much beyond Prince, I bet.

I listened to a few on my lunch break...

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings' cover was neat

I really, really like the album. Let's Go Crazy is easily tied for When Doves Cry for worst track.. but the rest are interesting and I like hearing interpretations instead of straight covers.

Riverboat Gamblers cover of Lets go crazy is an abomination.

It's not all bad, I kind of like Lavender Diamonds version of Purple Rain.

Where did I say that? Indeed, do you see me quoting your response? Comegetwild's post is typical of people around here who aren't capable of listening to music with open minds. He/they all have very narrow definitions of music (which tends to begin and end with Prince), and taking their opinions on music made by others seriously is nearly impossible.

I quite like the version of When Doves Cry, as it happens. And Purple Rain here is not too offensive. It's (the old) side 1 as a whole that makes me cringe.

Hey man 4k U, U don't know me, don't pigeonhole me. I listened 2 this album with high hopes and I gave U my opinion. U can agree, U can disagree but don't presume 2 make assumptions about me. After all, who died and left U keeper of the musical taste?

I really love Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings version of Take Me with U, and was also surpirsed by the cover of The Beautiful Ones by Fol Chen- that in particular just seemed like a a lost cause of a song to cover (as are all of them since no one will ever top the originals) but I think they used an interesting approach, and it works! (well, as good as a cover will ever be of that song-- Mariah's cover made me want to drive ice picks into my ear drums disbelief ).

I was kind of disappointed in Of Montreal's cover of Computer Blue- given their catalog of craziness, I was surprised how they didn't deviate too much from the orginal- I was hoping for an all out wack fest of insanity. oh well. shrug

Chairlift's Darling Nikki started out promising but then just sort of fizzled. I give them props for trying to do the backward message at the end though! lol

The mariachi I Would Die 4 U was kitschy good fun but I don't ever need to hear it again. confused

The rest was just a blur- except for the riverboat gamblers- that was absolutely painful- especially the end with him ranting about Apollonia and Vanity. shake

Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

can you steal a free download? isn't your e-mail address the cost? anyway...

on the whole, I like this better than any of the other Prince tribute albums I know. it's the first one I could actually listen to from beginning to end.

Take Me With U, The Beautiful Ones and Purple Rain are the standouts for my ears, though I think I prefer the Misty Dixon cover of Beautiful Ones (from If I Was Prince).

It's a US release. I didn't see it at Borders or Target, but I'll pick it up as soon as I can find it. Barnes & Noble will probably have it. I'll probably go there tomorrow.

I did Google the last word of the article so that I could listen to the album, but to be honest, I'm more excited to read the magazine.

Spin Mag. has got an online archive of their old issues so that you can read last month's issue online, for example June 2009 issue: http://digital.spin.com/spin/200906/

By the way, there's also an article about Prince, his 3 concerts in L.A.... (p.102/103)...

So you could also wait till end July (around 23rd I'd guess, when the August issue is due) and read the last word of the article in their online archive where you'll find the July 09 issue... I think the download link works till end September...

Anxiety

so i finally got a chance to check this out today, and what most folks have been saying is right: the sharon jones track is hot, and the rest of it is fair to partly cloudy at best.

the cover of "let's go crazy" reminds me of a bad touring company of "hedwig & the angry inch". really bad wanna-be glam rock. ouch. disbelief

i love the sharon jones cover of "take me with u", though it doesn't really SOUND like the original at all, does it? it sounds more like "kiss" with the words to "take me with u" crammed in there. but that's what all her stuff sounds like - her cover of "what have you done for me lately" is the same way. i don't mind. it sounds real and it's got great energy. i love sharon. bow

the rest of the comp didn't really leave too much of an effect on me...some interesting studio geekery but overall kinda unmemorable. i agree with contrapposto - the of montreal cover of "computer blue" was uncharacteristically vanilla. also, even though i didn't think the cover of "when doves cry" was all that great, i don't think there was anything wrong at all with apples' vocals. it's not like she knocked out some amazing diva shit or anything, but who expects her to? she sounded fine to me. shrug

Went out and picked up the mag today (whoever said they didn't want to subscribe just to get this, what, no stores in your area sell Spin?), went to the site via Firefox, no freezing problems here, answered the question/code thingy which I could have done without buying the mag as I already knew the answer, but hey I wanted the mag anyway so cool, downloaded the tracks, listening now, only one I like so far is Take Me With U (my least favorite on the original), love this rearrangement, sounds like a 60's style R&B track, COOL!

There is no physical CD. You download it here: http://www.spin.com/artic...ce-tribute

A guy would have to put in the last word from the article as the code and your email addy. You then get an email for a link to a .zip file containing artwork and .mp3s.
