This is a unique cover as ever by Dulli cool

from Spin magazine:

For this summer's 25th anniversary of Prince's classic movie and album Purple Rain, SPIN is excited to announce the release of Purplish Rain, a tribute album made up of nine tracks commissioned by the editors of SPIN.

One very special note: Among the nine songs is a version of "When Doves Cry" performed by the Twilight Singers, featuring Apollonia, who costarred with Prince in the movie, and Greg Dulli -- check out SPIN.com's exclusive stream of the track below!

The entire album will be available as a free download for SPIN magazine readers and subscribers via SPIN.com starting June 23.

Purplish Rain was produced to accompany the July cover story, an oral history of Purple Rain, for which contributing writer Brian Raftery spoke to most of the key people involved in the creation of the movie and album.

While being interviewed for the cover story, Apollonia mentioned that she had performed Prince songs with Greg Dulli, the ex-Afghan Whigs frontman who's also recorded with Mark Lanegan as the Gutter Twins. She then contacted Dulli about covering a Prince track for SPIN's tribute.

"It was a fun challenge," says Dulli. "I can guarantee you that what we do sounds nothing like what you expect. The only thing you'll recognize is the lyrics."

Hear the song below, and check out the full tracklist for Purplish Rain:

1. "Let's Go Crazy" RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS
2. "Take Me With U" SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS
3. "The Beautiful Ones" FOL CHEN
4. "Computer Blue" OF MONTREAL
5. "Darling Nikki" CHAIRLIFT
6. "When Doves Cry" THE TWILIGHT SINGERS
7. "I Would Die 4 U" MARIACHI EL BRONX
8. "Baby I'm a Star" CRAIG WEDREN
9. "Purple Rain" LAVENDER DIAMOND

Oh hell to the no-no-no! How on GOD's green earth could they do that to "When Doves Cry". Yes, I believe in putting a little bit of your own spin to a song when it comes to doing remakes. But, this is unacceptable. And what's more is that Apollonia is singing on it. WHY? WHY? Why would she allow them to do this to such a treasured classic? Is someone at SPIN on crack? Dang. Why did they not try to work something out to where they could re-master and re-issue the album? I can't believe this. No wonder Prince is so picky about who gets to cover his music. To hell with the money. Sometimes, art should be valued.

y'all are acting like this tribute is going to replace all known copies of the original purple rain album and that the intent of this album is to be the most masterpiecey masterpiece of all masterpiecedom.

LIGHTEN UP, YOU GUYS. lol

it's not supposed to be some monumental work of art. it's a tribute. it's just supposed to be fun. i think the artists involved were aware that their versions wouldn't end up sounding better than prince's versions, so it's okay if we feel the same way. just enjoy it for the fun little novelty it is and quitcha bitchin, sheesh. nuts

i'm pretty sure it's AT LEAST on an iTunes commercial, but i swear i've heard it used several other times as background music.

Yep, it is the song, and I LOVE that song. The song "Ordinary Day" in a Target commercial is pretty cool too.

I haven't heard of any of these people, either. The version of When Doves Cr y is alright. As much as I like Ginuwine, I really hated his cover of it. I'm not sure if I'll be running out to get a copy of the magazie to get it, though.

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit I've never heard of any of the artists/bands who are doing the covers. boxed Still, I would love to hear this, as Purple Rain is my favorite Prince album. However, I'm not gonna subscribe to the mag just to get the music...so I hope it'll be available through other means...lurking

You should be more ashamed that you would allow yourself to be ashamed for not knowing the bands.

yay! Someone who can sing is doing "Take Me With You". Oh, but wait...

But then they had to add Crapples to "When Does Cry" neutral Did this Geg Dulli guy suddenly go deaf while staring at her boobs too?

got the mag....but the cd was a pits. vary few can take a prince track and make it easy to listen to. WDC was pain-staking to listen to, sorry, but true.

I love Apples....u would think that after all the time she has had between then and now, she could have done something not only better but maybe slipped something of her own....like a track inspired by PR?

In any case it was mosdef a good read.

How did you download the album? Isn't it not supposed to be up until the 23rd? Certainly the publicized link isn't active yet.

The Spin magazine at Borders was the one with Jack White on the cover yesterday. Maybe subscribers have received their issues already.

Anyone else get the new issue?

I bought a copy of the tribute issue this afternoon. It contains fantastic and rare photos from that era.

No access code required to download tracks beginning June 23.

Thanks! Good to know. I guess I was a day early, or Borders is slow on the uptake. I'll try Barnes & Noble.

Does anyone here believe that Prince would okay a cover that sounded better than the original or have a band with such popularity do a cover that would compete with his appeal. NOT.

Cool, retro 2-color cover. Damn, a remaster could have put a nice chunk of change in Prince's pocket with the interest generated over this anniversary. Too bad. For us.

I still haven't found the magazine at stores yet. mad

Just picked up the mag today. The person who wrote sure had alot of mistakes it was pitiful. In one photo where Morris is sitting with A6, they don't even know who Susan or Brenda are. The caption says some unidentified girl-- (Susan)--, and Jill Jones -- ( when it's Brenda)--. Did this person even see the movie?????

I hate stupid mistakes. Please bone up before you write on a subject.

Yeah, I saw that and I thought that was lame and lazy too. However, the story is an oral history, which is nothing but a bunch of quotes from the people who were there...so if there are mistakes, it's likely due to the memories of the people talking, and not the person who put the story together. But I didn't see much in the way of glaring mistakes in the article, other than that lame photo caption. shrug
