OK...so, I think I misread the article: I thought it said that the CD was only available to Spin subscribers, but the way all of you are talking, it sounds like the disc will be bundled with this particular issue on newsstands/in stores. Is that right?

If so, I will definitely buy at least one copy of the issue, if not several! excited I just got a bit confused, because I thought I would have to pay for 12 issues of a magazine I would never read. rolleyes

I think there will be a code in the news stand and subscription issues to get the downloads. It doesn't look like physical CDs will be pressed.

You're right...it does say it will be available "as a download," e.g., no physical disc. I hope the code will be easy to spot and won't involve cryptic guesswork like Lotusflow3r did! lol

no. I'm sure Spin is run by comparatively competent business people who actually want to sell you something instead of hiding it from you, then trying to charge you money for it anyway.

I can't seem him liking people covering his work when his own work is available.

If that's true then he must have suddenly changed his mind on other people covering his tracks, or maybe they offered a good royalty deal.

Who knows. Maybe he's cool with it because Spin's giving him his first cover story in years. But, hell... it's probably about the money.

i personally think this is a dreadful idea. i simply cringe at any covers of his music. (with the exception of sinead's nothing compares... altho this was not sung by him originally so had nothing to compare it with.)

how can ANYONE do let's go crazy without sounding like some holiday camp rep singer entertaining a crowd of 20 odd saddos.

And who else here woke up today with an e-mail from the Twilight Singers with the cover of When Doves Cry attached????

Very cool to recieve and it's not that bad of a cover. Apples is buried in the mix just like Take Me With U which is a good thing wink
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Remember there is only one destination and that place is U
All of it. Everything. Is U.

Sigh... EVERY FRIKKING TIME.

http://www.straightdope.c...elses-song

Surprisingly enough, if somebody is determined to do a cover version of your song, it is well-nigh impossible for you, Joe Composer, to stop them. In general, the right to record somebody else's song is called a "mechanical license," and usually it's negotiated in a routine manner between representatives of the copyright holder and the would-be cover artiste. (Outfits like The Harry Fox Agency in New York generally handle the publisher's side.) However, in the rare event that negotiations fail, the copyright laws contain provisions for a type of mechanical license called a "compulsory license," which, in effect, give anyone the right to record any song he or she wants to, as long as notice is given to the song's copyright owners within 30 days after the recording is made and before it is distributed. Compulsory licenses were written into the copyright laws in 1909 in an attempt to break up a monopoly in the piano-roll industry--an industry which has since been pretty well broken up, period. So why negotiate at all? Mainly because the law dictates higher royalty rates and stricter payment schedules for compulsory licenses than you can obtain with the negotiated kind.

From Billboard:

une 11, 2009 11:41 AM ET
David J. Prince, N.Y.
SPIN magazine is going crazy with its July issue, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Prince's "Purple Rain" with a comprehensive oral history of the film and album and a free downloadable tribute that features nine bands doing song-for-song covers of the record's classic tracks.

Dubbed "Purplish Rain," the nine song tribute album boasts a real coup: Apollonia, the one-time Prince protege who starred in the film, contributes a cover of "When Doves Cry" that she recorded with Greg Dulli and his band, the Twilight Singers. Other cover versions on the album include Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings doing "Take Me With You," Of Montreal's take on "Computer Blue," a punk-mariachi version of "I Would Die 4 U" and Lavender Diamond's rendition of the title track.

The Apollonia/Dulli duet is currently streaming at SPIN.com, and the full downloadable album will be available when the magazine hits the streets on June 23. The album download is free, but a clue from the magazine article will be required for access.

"We approached a bunch of bands, and we got nine who were really into it," Doug Brod, SPIN's Editor-in-Chief told Billbaord.com. "All these bands did it for free - they paid for all of their recording time and they mastered all the tracks themselves." Unlike several other Prince cover records that have run afoul of The Artist's wishes, SPIN cleared all of the tracks and are covering the royalty expenses.

The 10-page oral history was compiled and written by Brian Raftery, who spoke to most of the key participants in the original project, including Wendy and Lisa, other members of the Revolution and the Time, Rob Cavallo (the film's producer and Prince's manager at the time), director Albert Magnoli, and the original screenplay writer William Blynn.

"We did a full court press to get Prince himself involved," said Brod. "He's a pretty tough guy to get a hold of, and he doesn't dwell much on nostalgia."

wow...sounds pretty cool. ON one hand I understand prince's POV not getting involved BUT on the other hand I don't understand it and wish he would get involved in something like this.

I don't think he dwells much on anything, dwelling is such a "mortal" emotion after all. I wonder if he gets lonely up on the pedestal all by himself?

also, keep in mind that there's a big difference between a fan putting out a tribute album on a small indie label, and a large corporate magazine publisher. the fan is probably going to be more easily intimidated and less prepared to take on a megacelebrity's legal goons, whereas the publisher probably deals with that kind of thing all the time and has the proper resources to push back.

FYI: Apollonia sang background on the Twilight Singers album "Blackberry Belle" in 2003.
Dulli used to be a big Prince fan, but the last time I saw the Twilight Singers perform, I asked him if he was still into him and he said that Prince was all about the money now(This was around the time of the Musicology tour). He said he thought that Prince was just trying to milk his fans for more money by saying that Musicology was going to be the last tour. Fast forward 5 years later, and I guess Prince was telling the truth and Dulli appears to be back on the bandwagon.

I am sorry to the Appolonia fans...but Appolonia COULD NOT sing twenty five years ago and AINT' NOTHIN' CHANGED! Yeah, I listened to the recording online..but I am being honest. She was what she was a pretty armpiece for Prince the irked the you-know-what out of Vanity at the time ( because she was a look-a-like replacement)
