MTV News: Parsing Prince’s Yellow Outfit At The Apollo Theater Gala

The 75th Anniversary Gala for the Apollo Theater in New York brought together Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Steve Harvey, Fantasia Barrino, Bill Cosby, Quincy Jones and — perhaps most notably — Prince, who appeared on stage to help induct a handful of legendary divas into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame. Minneapolis’ favorite son has kept his wardrobe relatively tame over the last few years, but last night he appeared in an outfit so yellow he would have been mistaken for Big Bird if he wasn’t so diminutive. There’s even more than meets the eye in this particular ensemble, so let’s take a look at the various components:

» The Shirt: What goes better with gold? Even more gold. The sleeves and buttons are trimmed with a shiny-looking gold lamé, which give the garment an even more blinding finish. Normally famous folk wear loose-fitting clothes to mask weight gain, but Prince probably does it to hide that fact that he’s even tinier than we think.

» The Glasses: Bono brought those fly-eye shades to the masses, but Prince made them amazing. Most people look aloof when they wear sunglasses indoors, but Prince manages to sidestep that. No matter what’s going on below his neck, Prince always has a cool head.

» The Necklace: Did Prince throw a luxury baby mobile around his neck? Does he always wear jewelry he stole from an art museum’s early Mesopotamian wing? Is that actually a breast plate to protect him when he goes jousting? The mind reels.

» The Walking Stick: Prince doesn’t have any trouble walking, and it’s somewhat hard to believe that he’d be carrying around a pimp stick (though perhaps he’s into some business at Paisley Park that we don’t know about). Upon closer examination, it turns out that the stick is awfully sparkly (perhaps Bedazzled?), which obviously means Prince is a wizard. (Actually, can you imagine anything more awsome than the Purple One appearing in the next “Harry Potter” movie?)

» The Pants: Okay, so maybe he’s not a wizard. But with those pants, he must have been mistaken for a genie, right?

» The Shoes: And the outfit finishes off seamlessly with high-heeled pumps that look like a cross between magic slippers and the sort of thing Brüno might be wearing during his press tour. All told, it seems like Prince should have magic powers (or at least be protecting a pot of gold), but even if he doesn’t, that doesn’t take away the majesty of “Let’s Go Crazy.”

the outfit is sick! Perfect for the occasion. It's the kind of get up Prince looks great wearing. Mariah loved it. The crowd adored it. MTV pieces doesn't come off as a diss at all. The writer seemed quite envious.

I rather like this style of ourfit compared to the cross breasted suits which look to confining. I do wish he would eat betterso he can put on some weight. It appears as through he's wasting away. Prince, honey, he proved whatever point you have been trying to make, please fire your cooking staff.

Too Harsh! I think Prince always DRESSES really FLY and I dig all the OPULENCE. To me he brings ROMAN NOBILITY and a PRINCELY GLAMOUR which is really NEEDED and it is EXCITING. He always looks GORGEOUS and BEAUTIFUL.

That's a great picture of him. One of the best in ages.

I do agree with MTV's obvservation though about the clothes. He has been quite conservative in the main but this looks like an almagamation of so many looks post 90's. I like it by the way. But even the hair is doing the same-one thing you have to say about Prince is that you can never assume he has plateaud in anyway,and yes weirdly I do agree with the Harru Potter comment-I think P would be ripe for being Mr Cameo popstar

During the dark ages of 2001-2003 where he was wearing suits all the time (ugh! too 'businessman / JW preacher like' IMO), I was desperate to see him in colours and creative clothes again, so I'm glad hes reverted to them.

Those that can't have a laugh at Prince's expense every now and then and take everything so damn literal all the time have issues.

He once said in an interview, that he wore sunnies so that people could not see his eyes were red rimmed. They get like that when he works (plays) too hard and is too buzy to rest . It's on the org somewhere.

I went to several unplugged tappings back in 90's and the people working there were jerks: trying to act all powerful, and actually got bent out of shape when my friends and I were able to get in w/o tix (per bands) access the musicians/food area per musicians and they were not!
Today, the shows and the djs are just plain boring, rarely funny and NEVER witty!
Having been around to witness the beginning of MTV, at least in the early days there was excitement.
Sorry about the rant, but the network is just plane stale these days.

Hi Everyone Prince looked Great.Ipersonally feel MTV is just jealous of Prince.

He looked really good in Gold toned colors. Keep in mind Prince just made 51years of age by the time he was presenting Pattie Labelle withher award.In many societies,when wedding anniversaries reach 50ty years of marriage,the couples consider that to be a Golden moment in their marriage and they give Gold to each other for a 50ty year wedding anniversary gift. So maybe Prince was keeping the tradition up by wearing gold and celebrating his 51 years on Planet Earth.

Of course a network cannot be jealous but it was my experience that the people who worked there during the 90's were shallow, jealous, posers who fawned over the celebs like little school girls (both the male and female employees), and did act jealous and blatanly rude to those who had complete access to the band and back stage areas. They acted like they were important, as if they owned MTV instead of being paid help and had no grace as far as knowing how to treat others, and I heard jealous complaints directly. So as far as I am concerned MTV hires clueless posers who have nothing to give themselves, but hope to hang around the fringe of celebrities to feel important... Maybe it has changed but I doubt it.

For someone in his 50s he does look amazing.
