that's a hard question. i think all the material on 1999 is very strong.

personally i never cared for the song "1999", i don't understand what so
many people think the big deal is.

but i'm realistic enough to understand that a gazillion people can't be
wrong and it's just me.

even chosing a best song is hard though. i want to say "a-u-t-omatic",
but i'm also thinking "something in the water (does not compute) altho
what i really want to say is "lady cab driver", lol.

too much quality material to even pick a favorit song. damn don't you
miss those days.

i was born with the wrong sign, in the wrong house, with the wrong ascendancy

TheEnglishGent

Strong: 1999, Little Red Corvette, DMSR, Free

Crap: Something In The Water, Automatic, Lady Cab Driver, All The Critics.

The rest sit in the middle and depending on the day lean towards ok, or not good. Not my favourite P album by a long stretch. Absolutely love Delirious as a live track, but not so much on record.

And now for a cup of tea.

The weakest song on 1999 was 1999! However, 1999 was a very strong song AND a guaranteed hit for the year 1999 had him and WB been able to get over themselves! The rest of the songs were just the hot fudge, whipped cream, cherries, nuts and chocolate sprinkles on top of a perfect musical sundae! cool

Of course, I'm a Liberal! I'm an American, damn it!

Exactly. To say those songs are "crap" deserves a beat down.

Probably the strongest from a songwriting standpoint is Little Red Corvette.

DMSR is my favorite, musically/performance/stylistically speaking.

Free has never done much for me, nor All the Critics.

I have always liked Delerious, but I can see now why some don't.

hmm. Tough question.

I tend to skip 1999 and Little Red Corvette to get to everything else, although they are, of course, classics. Just feel like I've heard them enough.

Strongest... probably D.M.S.R.

Gee... I don't know. I really think all the rest of the tracks form one hell of an album.

you named the first ones that came to mind when i thought of my favorits lol
Every now and then I give them another chance, in fact, I'm listening now.

Up to 1:30 on Automatic and I just want to hit skip. It's like I've heard the whole song 10 times already and it just keeps repeating over and over. oooh, it just changed a bit, at the 3:30 mark, lost the annoying synths, bit better now. Not even half way yet and I'm nearly asleep. 5 minutes and the annoying synth line is back in the mix. Ok, 5:30 and got a bit of guitar going, which is better but it didn't last long, and can hardly be heard, even with the head phones on. How many frickin times does one song need to say A.U.T.omatic???? Better guitar at 7:00 but still, shouldn't it be over by now, moans and cries in the background are really annoying. It's not catchy, it's not interesting, nothing really happens, just repetitive and about 8 minutes too long. It's finally over and I can admit I was wrong. It's not crap, it's shit.

Seriously, what is there that people love about this track?

Ok, Something In The Water. Already better than Automatic by virtue of being less than half the length. It's got the same thing that nearly ruin I Would Die 4 U, the high-hat is too load in the mix for my liking. At 1:38 the hat is gone, but still nothing interesting is happening. 2:00 and the hat returns briefly but it's drowned by a coooool scream. The song finally found some emotion! 2:35 more screaming, very nice, love it when he screams. It's over, much like Automatic, not catchy or interesting to me. Two great vocal moments just aren't enough for me. Still crap. yawn

Oh crap, Lady Cab Driver next, 8:15 minutes long, at least the bass line is funky. 2 Minutes in and nothing much has happened. Now he's starting on all the things that this is for, w00t. Hey there's a clock chiming. That's nice of Prince to think of something to wake us up. Ohh, 5:41, synths and guitar, I like this bit. I want to say there's not enough happening but that can't be valid, because then I think of stuff like Sign Of The Times and When Doves Cry, which don't have much happening but are superb works. What's missing? I don't know, all I know is that I've just had another 8 minutes of repetitive boredom, with only one redeeming moment.

All The Critics Love U In New York. Now here's a track that I've never got. It destroyed one of the London ONA shows for me. There I am having a great time, when he rolls out this nonsense. But it was worse than I thought, it went on for ages and then he says, thank you, goodnight. WTF, that's not a show closer. I sat there for an hour waiting for the real ending. Still bummed now. Then just to rub salt in the wound, he played it for ages at the Indigo on the final night. It seemed to go on for about 20 minutes, I nearly had a nap. I swear, if he'd finished with that again, I'd have been up on the stage.

Anyway, I digress, it's started and I love the first 15 seconds but then we continue with the theme of boring repetition as seen on the previously mentioned tracks. Some cool but very brief guitar moments around the 2:30 mark. I just really don't like the , all the critics love you part. Nothing else of note to say about it. I don't get it.

So that's it, what am I missing here? There's nothing that makes me want to so much as bob my head in those tracks. I do get an urge to move, but my hand to the skip button probably isn't what Prince had in mind.

To end on a plus, I've got to add Let's Pretend We're Married to my strong list. Forgotten how good this one really is, which is odd as it kind of falls into the long and repetitive groove of the others but it's got something they don't. This one makes me move.

And now for a cup of tea.

i think "free" is the weakest. i have NEVER liked that song. hmph!

strongest? i dunno. "DMSR" is pretty tight. "something in the water" is an awesome showcase for how extreme prince's voice and moods could go. "1999" is a perfect party song.

there's a lot of strong on that album. nod

It will be, who can stay awake the longest while Automatic plays on repeat?

I'd lose about 2 minutes into the first spin.
