I love Prince but not all the genres he covers.

In the past (here we go again) he didn't really follow any genre as such but then when the 90s arrived we started to hear different things. Now I love that he can turn his hand to most anything and make it his but sometimes he'll play something that just isn't the type of music I'm into.

I find that when he plays those slow RnB (I may be wrong here) numbers I just don't like them much. It's just that there is nothing like that in my record collection that is otherwise like it. It's not something I'd listen to by anyone else.

Now I love rock, funk and ballads and other styles but I'm just not into the RnB thing so tracks like Beautiful, Love and Blessed (3121) no matter their quality are already disliked by me due to their genre. Another Like Me is another that springs to mind (I know that if I was into that style I'd probably rate it very highly).

Now am I alone here or does anyone else have this problem? No comments from you please Chilli.

im gona go slightly off topic to get to the point but,

Remember when Maria had her Sony contract and was married to Tommy Motolla (sp?)
she had a really safe and conservative dress code and did mainly ballads with a bit of non descript pop. but, you could really hear the quality and range of her voice some of her most acclaimed work was created then

I liked that Maria.

When she divorced Tommy and left Sony and started to create the music SHE wanted to make, she wanted to be herself and show the world the real Maria. In came the hoochy mamma clothes, Hip Hop and Rnb tunes with a bit of screeching here and there even though I cant always hear the quality of her voice anymore I love this Maria! lol

Perhaps one day she will be able to marry the two - quality music that forces her to use her God given talents with which ever genre she prefers to roll with.

now back to Prince biggrin

A free Prince not under the thumb of a Producer or record company reverted to what he knew and loved.. sharp suits, Old skool soul, Funk and Rnb (However he unlike Maria) he is able and willing to marry his preference for a particular genre with his long standing acknowledgement of what his fans expect of him pop/rock/funk hybrid.

Whichever genre of Prince music we prefer, I admire his constant 'nod' to each and everyone of his wide ranging fan bases. Dude is trying to please everyone, yes that includes himself. razz

I'm with you on that. Play what you enjoy and don't play what you don't enjoy. It's not rocket science here.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Why should you care? You shouldn't, that wasn't the point of the post. You obviously cared enough to comment though. Thankyou wink

Perhaps 'problem' was the wrong word. I guess I was drawing comparisons with other bands/artists in that they have a very defined genre and there is no, or very little at least, deviation from that point. With Prince we are lucky enough that he is capable and willing to produce, not only very different songs, but songs within many different styles. Unfortunately, for me, some of the genres he selects are not ones to which I find enjoyment within, regardless of the quality of song-writing, composition or ability. So I find myself, through no fault of my own, unable to truly appreciate a number of the songs which he has released over the years. So I simply asked if anyone else also had this same experience. I must stress that I am not discussing songs which a person does not think is a good song but purely a song which is good but which is of a genre that one does not particularly enjoy. Does this make sense now (hopefully I've not written 'rocket-science' wink)?

And now having re-read my last post I guess the answer is of itself. I understand the brilliance of REM and Radiohead but for the life of me can't get into them as much as I've tried. Carlos Santana another. Yes his soloing is world-class but his music holds no interest within me and if anything I find his solos irritating and lacking in guttural passion. Yet I still understand that he is almost peerless for his music.

So, as suggested by purplecam, I don't listen to those artists that don't do it for me. But this is Prince I'm talking about and, for some reason I can't put my finger on, I see it as something worth mentioning. Not sure why, but I gladly await your replies informing me of my idiocy for speaking about it.
