What do you HATE most about ONA Live?

I hate the alteration of Joy in Repetition. Specifically "4 letter words will not be heard, not up on this stage 2night".

This is why I hate Prince's religious brainwashing. This line specifically speaks of his no longer using curse words BUT THIS TOTALLY MISSES THE POINT OF THE SONG! HELLO..."She said LOVE me" Love is a 4 letter word and specifically THE 4 letter word spoken of in the song.

What do you hate the most?

My book was a bit scratched and torn too, but in a way I kind of liked it. I got a mental picture of Prince, Rhonda, and the other bandmates sitting on the floor stuffing ONA Live sets into boxes and slapping labels on them all in a hurry. LOL

Don't know as I haven't received it yet.

While I also have some problems with Prince changing the lyrics to his songs (though they are HIS songs), you are incorrect about Joy in Repetition. The four letter words he is speaking of in the intro ARE cuss words. The line is preceded with "pimps and things like to hang outside and cuss for kicks." It is these people and their conversations he refers to with the "four letter words are seldom heard with such dignity and bite."

STOP! There are many of us here that don't have the box set yet. I am excited as hell to get it and I don't want to start hearing about technical incosistancies just yet.

(I know, I know, I know, I didn't have to go into the thread...but the title rubbed me the wrong way)

I don't really HATE anything about it...but when the audience fills in some parts that can be quite irritating. I want to hear Prince sing it, hitting those high notes and all, not the audience!

I've always took the line like this:

Prince observing the woman on stage sees that she is "talking to noone in particular" when she says "They say the baddest I am tonight" at which point she begins singing "Love Me" over and over which causes Prince to say "4 letter words are seldom heard with such dignity and bite". It's that bite that causes him to eventually drag her from the stage and into the alley.

Cuss words aren't ONLY 4 letters but the word "Love" IS...Get it?

I "hate" all the talking Prince does over the beginning minute or so of "Xenophobia"...seems like he's trying to squeeze in ever-stinkin-thang he can, every "issue" he supports--"surrender your expectations...if you've come to get your purple rain on, better hit the door...not interested in what you know, but what you're willing to learn...leave that blood alone...don't you know that blood kills blah blah blah..."...it's just too much talking when the groove should be doing all the talkin'...you get used to it quickly, but I wish it wasn't there to begin with...

I'm a little disappointed, although i understand why
he did it, that he left out the covers...especially
"A Case Of U". Great to hear him sing that LIVE...!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

This is true! I think he targets Purple Rain as it is his largest albatross in his mind.

Prince doesn't have anything against his older cuts, in fact, i'm sure he loves all his songs equally. He's referring to the casual fan, ie, the "Purple Rain" fan, who
was only along for the ryde because he was the flavor of the moment. Shit, i wouldn't want "those" people at my concerts either!! This concert tour was for music lovers, not "hit-paraders".

I also thought that the Aftershow disc could have been much tighter. He performed a blistering rendition of Calhoun Square at the House of Blues in LA 4/19/02. I'm sure there were other songs in other aftershows that blow away most of the stuff on the aftershow disc.

I always wanted to hear that song live. One day I hope to hear it all the way through. The solo at the end is one of my absolute favorites.

That's how I took it as well...when he says "surrender your expectations" before it, it was like saying "stop sitting there wishing it was 1986 and come join me in the here and now, dammit.."..lol...still, way too much talking, and it wasn't necessary at all...

But Super what can I do ? I really love the ONA Cd's ;it's true I gush over him and have a Bias all for Him,but what can you do? I Know Prince is Human and all. I wish he didn't get Perturbed when his fans Gush and become Fanatical like he's God and all. I would Hope he would understand just how much Happiness his Music brings into our Lives and for that we are Forever Grateful for that Enrichment. I will never Understand why he would ever say anything Negative about Himself even in a Joking kinda way. He has Tons of female fans who Love Him and think he's Sexy as Hell. If you think I'm crazy to Feed his Ego well this is how I feel and I'll Stroke Him and Feed it Forever. I think he should be Massaged Frequently so he Always Knows just How Much he is Appreciated in Case he Doesn't hear it Enough. I want Prince to Know we always wish him the Best and we Pray for Him for all good things.

Supafunky, while I like your analysis of love as another four letter word, the song just doesn't support your view. The female singer aluded to does not appear until later in the song. Look at all the lyrics in order again. I think you'll see the problem with your hypothesis.

Isn't that the beauty of interpretation? I see your point but I STILL hold to my version. In the song you hear the din of the crowd becoming quieter as if he's walking into the club only to hear her saying this line. Also, which holds more dignity? 4 letter cuss words or LOVE?

Either way it still sucks that Prince chose to spew religious propaganda during this song.
