How does one write a negative review for a Prince album?

Without offending the fanbase? Is there a way where one might write a negative review and those that admire Prince would say, "Oh, I understand where that person's coming from. While I may personally disagree with them based on my fanaticism, I respect their opinion."

I doubt that's possible.

Maybe the critic is not getting paid enough to put out a good review or they are in a bad mood?

Easy ...you just need to be able to back up what you say....

So my question to you is how would you back up your review.....i'll give you a few days...months to think about it....

It is possible to write a negative review, kindly stating reasons for disliking the material. A form of criticism can be voiced without sarcasm and the writer can also mention their typical musical tastes...so the reader knows where they are coming from.

How to write a negative review without offending? What the hell are you trying to do....take all the fun out of it?

Dont ask this dude. He's the one with the bias. Playing Prince boots on his site on purpose so Prince would sue so he could write to MTV and here that he was trying to free the music but Prince was a meany poopy head. He is another LouWall

Prince.org is a cemetery where folks mourn Prince instead of celebrate him and his music. Last time I checked, Prince isn't dead yet.

I trips me the fuck out to see the "veterans" of this site rear their heads when a new release is on the way just to post catty bullshit. At this point in his career, I've come to understand that Prince will never be able to cater to his entire fanbase mainly because of his age and the diverse tastes of music of his fans. Despite some of the terrible music that he's released in recent years, and the continuous erratic behavior (which shouldn't even phase yall anymore), I still think Prince is held to some of the most unfair standards than any other artist of his caliber and age... particularly by his fans. Mofos, particularly the "vets", should stop acting like victims who can't escape their abusers... or jilted ex lovers who go out of their way to say negative shit about the one who broke their heart. It's nothing more than mere entertainment. Accept shit for what it is or move the fuck on... DAYUMM!!!!!

you have to have a thick skin to write reviews, because inevitably you're going to piss someone off, no matter how kind you think you were. also, you have to REALLY know your stuff, because if you pan an album/book/movie/etc. and you don't know a lot about the artist or the genre, people will rake you over the coals (and rightfully so).

I was at the listening party last night & my piece will go up on LAist.com later tonight or tomorrow AM. It's 99% written but not yet posted.

It's not 100% positive although I do think Lotusflow3r is remarkable. But the other 2 reviews I saw today seemed to feel the exact opposite, they dug MPLSound a lot more than I.

What can I say.... we were in the same room listening to the same thing...hopefully we all just call em as we see em. We each bring our own prejudices & favoritism. Somebody who wanted a whole album of lush romantic Diamonds And Pearls type stuff, cuz that's the only Prince music they like, would probably pan all three albums.

I'm not paid anything for reviews & all of the pro writers I know get paid the same regardless of how they felt about an album or gig. So to suggest money is turning opinion to a false negative is not accurate. If anything, you sometimes have corporate mags praise million-selling shit records so as not to put sand in the wheels of industry that keep them fat and happy. Jim DeRogatis tried to talk shit about Hootie in Rolling Stone when they were #1 & got his ass fired.

It's also tempting to make the coverage as favorable as possible so the publicity people will like it and keep inviting me to events and give me free stuff, which is the only perk I ever get for my efforts. But when it's time to write I don't think about them, I think about the readers.

I'm not totally unbiased when it comes to Prince - I came into it as a fan. I usually choose to only write about stuff I expect to like.

Bria's album is just not very good, though (on that, the major press and I agree). It would be abusing the readership to claim it was excellent & they should all go buy it.

If the fan base can't bear to hear that...sorry, I can't do anything about that. My responsibility is to the reader on the street, not to the fanatics. They already know the Correct view, they don't need my opinion.
