Prince is an underated guitar hero whilst Cobain was a anti-guitar hero. Warning: this site does contain nuts.
New for 2009! More nuts!

I think this is a open and shut case. Kurt Cobain had an influence on a single genre of music that really was only around for a couple of years. Musicians across the board have been influenced by Prince. Ithaca's Number 1 Prince Fan

to me prince is the best but i think for some stupid reason people hail nirvana on a much higher scale then prince's amazing opus

But I will go out on a limb and say "I Like It There" has a grunge rock feel to it. They are surely different but they were both around in the same era. Ithaca's Number 1 Prince Fan

Kurt Cobain will be a legend more for dying young than for his music -- but he was also credited with bringing Grunge to the masses.

I don't see the point of the thread. They're from two different eras. Cobain came into play in the 90s and his influence is more about rock and alternative. Prince's era was all glam and glitter, pop, funk and dance. They're both big influences but to different genres of music.

For the record, Prince's influence has had more crossover appeal. Plenty of rockers, indie and jazz folk cite Prince as an influence. I don't think Madonna, Herbie Hancock or JT will be citing Cobain as a big influence anytime soon. For the record, they are not from different eras. Nirvana's "era" was roughly 1989 thru 1994 - which in Prince terms is Batman/GB/D&P/Symbol/HitsBSides/Come. I do understand what you meant though - Prince's "prime" was 1980-1988 They are from completely different genres though - pretty much as different as they can be.
