Morning Papers

I read the lyrics. Is it about waiting for a girl to grow up so you can be with her? I'm really not sure. Are the "Morning Papers" referencing traditional thought? I just am not understanding this one.

Great song; and potentially quite literal, given some of his romances in the 90's; Carmen Electra, Anna Garcia and Mayte were all barely legal when he first met them. It's Mayte in the video, but who knows (although they do look very much in love in the video)

Beautiful song. I'm sure that she is mature and grown by now.

I never understood what that song meant, but it's nice and I love the Video!

I don't know exactly what the song is about but to me it's obviously about LOVE.

Very insightful interpretation. Thanks for redirecting the tread away from the silliness that ensued.

It's a beautiful song, but I don't think the lyrics would go down to well in this Paedogeddon climate if it was better known. Never thought the lyrics were particularly vague.

It's a song about how annoyed he is with reports in the press about him being with a girl half his age, and how they miss the point of true love as he sees it. And it's nicely done via the various romantic things he and his lover do on the way to get The Morning Papers, which, we find out at the end, is the cause of his concern to begin with.

However… Prince is also singing about a minor form of 'grooming', which is enough to get him banged up in several countries probably. The meaning of the 'schoolboy fantasy' line is given afterwards. 'That's why he had to wait' means she was underage initially. The schoolboys were in her classroom! It's been indicated in the past that he has met girls (legally children, at least in America) and has retained some form of contact until they were 'legal' (including his once future bride Mayte, who he was singing about, which should remove any ambiguity right there). For a guy who wouldn't last 10 minutes even in a juvenile female detention facility for the bed-ridden, he seems to take the age thing very seriously. See 'Peach' where the line 'She was young' is followed by the sound of a vehicle hitting the brakes!

But the prior act of maintaining contact with a minor with a view to future procreation would get him in big trouble these days. The irony is that he handed 'the morning papers' a goldmine of scandal there, but they didn't pick up on it.
