PLANET EARTH: 1 YEAR ON AND STILL LIKING!

I still listen to PE, it has lasting appeal, unlike Mcology and 3121 which I pretty much shelved after a few months.

Main reason: More intelligent / thoughful themes, V.good production (unlike his last two which sounded more rushed and plasticy)/
Catchy songs.
Positive message (listen to Resolution)
Sense of fun/humour - Guitar
Good guitar and beats on tracks.
I also find it flows together well, each song leading well into the other,

PE - Love the falsetto part, reminded me a lot of 'For You', showing us the Prince we know and love. Thoughful lyrics.

Guitar - Great get up and go. However, spoilt a bit by riff stolen from U2's I will Follow. The demo version released online would have been safer!

Somewhere Here on Earth - Harking back to the old romantic jazz-love songs, reminds me a bit of Love is Like a Losing Game. Nice, reminds me a bit of Emancipation era tracks too.

The One U Wanna C - Very catchy, slightly let down by overly simplistic lyrics though.

Future Baby Mama - Great, reminds me a bit of If I Was Your Girlfriend.

Mr.Goodnight - The Filler track of the album but still not too bad, flows nicely from last song.

All The Midnights In The World - Original song, slightly filler-ish but pretty nice all the same.

Chelsea Rodgers - V.funky, James Brown ish. Like the lyrics "We don't wanna be nobody's ghost of everything make the most". Fans take note!

Lion Of Judah - EXCELLENT. Love the beat and the Purple Rain ish guitar riff. Like lyrics too, a very visual song, you can picture easily what he is saying like in a film.

Resolution - Like this for its positive message and fitting that W and L feature on this. Nice rounding off of the album.

I still like it a lot too. I think a lot of people will come back to it in a year or two when the dust has really settled and find they like it more than they thought at the time. smile

i hope that happens. sometimes i'll get bored with the stuff i know i like and i'll throw on a less-listened to prince album in my collection just to mix things up a bit and see if i can hear it differently. i became a big fan of the come album that way - i hated it for years, then one day i threw it on my stereo out of boredom and something clicked, and it was suddenly brilliant to my ears. i don't know that PE will do that for me, but it'd be nice to consider it a salvageable effort. as of now, it's my least favorite of any prince album.

I'm gonna re-iterate the same exact thing I said another thread about this:

I'm just gonna go on record and say that Planet Earth is one of the most polarizing albums Prince has made. I don't think there's any in-between here. Those that love it REALLY REALLY LOVE IT. But those that hate it..well..I mean...they're probably regretting the day that they even purchase it. They would rather see it crushed by a steamroller. I think a lot of those opinions are unfair and irrational since the album isn't THAT bad. Maybe a couple of tracks are lame, but the strong songs really do shine thorough.

I respect Prince for making this though. I just wish folks would stop trying to look for another "Sign O' The Times" or "1999" or anything else they might've liked from Prince's past.

And here come the bashers. Time to go. lol
