Why does Prince do so many covers? he has enough of his own material! most of which he's never performed. and pretty much all of his covers are very lackluster, imo. maybe he's bored with his own work... | |

I've been wondering this too - the aftershow at the last night in London (21st night) contained LOADS of covers which seemed weird on a night when he could pretty much guarantee an audience full of hardcore fans who would have recognised and loved obscure old album tracks.

I always thought how great it was that he didn't do many covers. There was a stretch between "For you" and "Chaos and disorder" that he didn't officially release one cover. That's a span of almost twenty years. It wasn't until "Emancipation" that he officially released a cover (3 of them, that I can think of, on that CD).. I have no problems with him doing covers. Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for. | |

It seems weird that he is SO possessive about his own artistic 'ownership' and other people not borrowing his creations... but then he seems quite happy to borrow other people's creations. Yes I know his argument is about fair recognition of copyright and stuff and he lets other artists cover his work, I just find it counter intuitive that he would go to the trouble of getting the permission (I assume) to perform covers when he has so much of his own fantastic material in the archives. I also find it a bit of a clash with his purist/ownership views when he messes about with other people's creations eg. changing the words to Creep. I'm not criticising, I loved his version, I'm just confused that the same person can have seemingly contradictory views... wait, what am I saying, this is a man who can change his mind more often than his underwear! I guess one other consideration is that he seems to have mixed feelings about some of his back catalogue - he 'cleans up' some of the lyrics in stuff he does perform, and obviously won't play the really dirty ones (very disappointing!). I wonder as well if he has negative associations with some of the work because of the time period in which he wrote it or the circumstances around it. I've read someone else say on here that they can understand why he doesn't want to perform too many things he wrote for his ex-wives when those feelings are gone, and there were also bad feelings around the whole of the Black album for him. Anyway - I like to hear him do covers, but I'd like even more to hear him do some lesser known album material of his own! two words: Jehova's Witness Thank you, Larry..... Trying to cover his songs though is impossible! It's bad enough trying them on Karaoke! Our pub near work that has Karaoke on Fridays, has got a new company doing it and their Prince selection is like 10 times better than the last lot, they even have album tracks.
