I've gone into GREAT detail about this song on here MANY times in the past and why I adore it so much. I've even written a few threads just about the guitar intro alone. Today, I'll just say that it's my all time favorite Prince song next to the cut Controversy. It's one of the best singles ever by any artist.

One of Prince's absolutely best songs that I've heard so far. I can relate to the parent refrences in the lyrics.....the rest of the song is great as well... and my all time favorite video that I've seen so far. I love the ending...

Prince's literal words, aren't always what I gather emotionally.

In this case...I feel as if One Heart was torn apart...and two doves went their seperate ways.

It made me a huge fan as soon as I heard it.

Funny thing...I had to CONFIRM this was Prince song when I first heard it because I had randomly downloaded it and I couldn't believe it was a Prince song for some reason. Its so different from his other stuff.

Best Prince song ever.
While I had become a Prince fan before this song,
WDC is what cemented his status as my favorite artist ever.

Like so many others, this is the song that got me into Prince. It used to be my all-time favorite prince song, but that title now belongs to Controversy (opposite order of blackguitaristz's top 2 favorite P songs lol). Also, this is the song that made me want to start playing guitar. It's simply amazing.

When doves cry was the first time I saw Prince so it holds a very special place in my heart, I think it's has a sad, lonely pain filled, meaning like so many of Prince songs but it's just put to a groovy beat.

It was just so striking, different, something we could all relate to. And I remember being completely captivated by the video - probably the first time I saw Prince too, when I think about it .....

sometimes im in "When Doves Cry" mood and i put in my cd with 6 diffrent live versions, and good with my fix ror a little while

I love 'When Doves Cry'...Definetly one of my favourite P songs!!!
I can relate to it both personally and poetically..and not 2 mention how it sounds musically.

I actually cried when I first heard the song. As I've said, it was released on my 21st birthday.

There are lines that still resonate with me today.
"Touch if you will my stomach, feel how it trembles inside."
"Don't make me chase you - even doves have pride."
"Dig if you will the picture . . ."
"Dig if you will the picture of you and I engaged in a kiss."
(Yes, I've used them shamelessly.)

Never said that I can recall but have often thought, "How can you just leave me standing alone in a world that's so cold?"

I was already a veteran Prince fan and the first time I heard it I told my brother he would be singing it before the summer was over, and that it would be the biggest song of the year.

well, yeah...

what gets me big time is *"the piano player stops playing" every time this song comes on the speakers

I have never met anyone who didn't like this song. I know they are out there, but I haven't run into to anyone. This is just straight out a great song. The thing about it, you can't help but sing it. You find yourself singing, you just can't help it!!!

I connect with this song so strongly I find it hard to know where to begin....for me this was the ultimate Prince song and it came about at a time when my violent, alcoholic father had just left my mother....thank God!!!
This song made me feel like someone else understood exactly what I was going through.....its part of what really drew me in.....

yep awesome song considering this has no bass, Prince was on a roll back then writing alot of hits

Like some of the others I was a teen when this came out, and the lyrics referring to parental problems were particularly apt at the time; as well as the overall sense of isolation and loneliness - it was pretty much the sountrack to that period of my life (and yes, it made me a Prince fan).

Doves cry, not tears of pain; doves cry, because love reigns.

Something about that song when you hear it and it comes with that guitar intro is unlike anything that ive heard before i mean it doesn't the song doesn't even have bassline unlike most songs and its still hot, the song is pure genius. His tone of voice and vocal range in general is amazing and it shows on that song. The reference to his parents i can relate to as a teen. For it to reach my generation and still be appreciated that song is timeless.

It was the song that made me a fan. It's amazing that after 24 years, there STILL isn't another song like this. Freaking amazing isn't it?

Call me a fanatic but I have 2 tats because of this song.
