Cheers erupt as Prince takes Coachella stage

When Prince stepped onto the stage, everyone in the packed audience at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival knew they were witnessing Coachella history, and the crowd erupted into applause and cheers accordingly.

The stage was filled with fog as he took it, about 25 minutes late, dressed in a flowing white suit.

Festival promoter Paul Tollett said he has been wanting to get Prince to play the festival for years.

At one point, Sheila E joined Prince on stage and sang her hit, "Glamourous Life."

After 20 minutes of a Morris Day and Sheila E. reunion with Prince on the guitar, he launched into 1999.

Prince plays Coachella, covers Radiohead!!!

INDIO, Calif. (AP) — "Coachella, I am here." Prince hit the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with that announcement, heralding his arrival as the much-anticipated headliner of the summer festival.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, Prince strutted onto the stage wearing white pants and a white shirt with glittery fringe. His performance, the centerpiece of the three-day festival, was announced only two weeks ago, immediately making an already very hip festival of 125-plus bands significantly more in-demand. And Prince knew it.

"You are the coolest place on earth right now!" Prince declared to a sea of tens of thousands.

Prince, who had been sought out to perform at Coachella since the festival was founded nine years ago, told the crowd that when he agreed to perform, he informed the organizers that he would not only play, but party too. True to his word, Prince then launched his band — complete with a horn section and background singers — into "Jungle Love." Morris Day came out to sing his song, while Prince strolled around the stage with his guitar.

For the beginning of the show, Prince preferred to let his guitar do the talking. He also welcomed the singer and drummer Sheila E, who took the lead for a song and then joined Prince in an extended jam. Finally, Prince satisfied the crowd with a celebratory performance of "1999." His classic "Little Red Corvette" soon followed.

One of the big surprises of Prince's concert was his cover of Radiohead's "Creep," which was sure to be one of Coachella's most talked-about performances. With some lyrics adjusted, a ripping guitar solo and extended falsetto crooning for a finale, Prince's "Creep" had the crowd slack-jawed. To close the set, he gave another unique take on a song not his own: the Beatles' "Come Together." He urged the audience — whom he called his "choir" — to sing "Come together, yeah" over and over.

And just as trepidation was beginning to take hold in the crowd that Prince might actually leave without playing "Purple Rain," he returned to confirm that even in the desert, it could rain purple. Even after the encore, though, he came back for more. "They're telling me that we got to go, but I can't leave!" Prince shouted. He then flew through a torrid version of "Let's Go Crazy."

Prince had widely been considered the one act most all concertgoers — a diverse 60,000 of indie rockers, electronica dancers and pop fans — were certain to see. And by the end of "Let's Go Crazy," Prince had seemed to put his stamp on Coachella lore. "From now on, this is Prince's house," he shouted before triumphantly strutting off stage and tossing his guitar 30 feet behind him.

Wow, great pics. You know you can always count on Serpan for the best pictures, and he´s always sooo fast.

Prince and Sheila both really look good and amazingly young . Morris also looks OK but Prince and Sheila look at least ten years younger than they actually are.
I wonder what Prince´s secret recipe is.
Dieting ? Exercise ? Being in charge of his daily life ? Doing what he wants to do ? Lots of sleep or little sleep ? Having money ?
There must be some kind of secret, it´s not normal for a man born in 1958 to look that young.I bet he´s got a painting of himself somewhere in the attic, just like Dorian Gray.

Don´t know but I doubt it. He doesn´t look like he´s had surgery or botox. You can tell if someone has had surgery or botox done but Prince looks pretty normal, so does Sheila. And his hair looks amazing, too.

I did not see the Jay Leno performance, but the reactions were somewhat disappointing. The Coachella performance will erase the Leno memories rather quickly.

The only people disappointed by the Jay Leno performance were the people expecting a five hour like performance on a T.V show. eek .

Anyway according to the report people at the fest seemed to have had a good time.

I have to say that Sheila looks fantastic. Sounds like the show was awesome and worth the wait for the people attending. Good to see Morris and Jerome on that stage too. What a classic reunion.

Here's another report;this one from nme:

http://www.nme.com/news/coachella/36235

"The purple one surprises crowd with 'Creep'"

Prince surprised the sold-out crowd at Coachella tonight with a cover of Radiohead's 'Creep', as well as a selection of his greatest hits tonight (April 26) in the Californian desert.

Wearing a white suit, the purple one’s highly-anticipated set on the Main Stage kicked off around 30 minutes later than scheduled, after a searingly hot day which saw performances from the likes of Kraftwerk, MGMT, Mark Ronson and Portishead.

The star-studded crowd watching Prince's set from the packed VIP area included a veritable motley crue of celebrities including David Hasselhoff, Melanie Griffith, Steven Tyler, Sienna Miller, Scott Speedman, Jared Leto and a host of other Hollywood types.

Also spotted during the show were The Cribs' Ryan Jarman and Kate Nash, who played a show earlier today, and Jamie Reynolds of Klaxons, who was wandering around in a suit following his performance with Mark Ronson.

Covering The Beatles' 'Come Together', Prince rallied the enormous crowd to chant “War No More” between verses, but due to poor sound quality, much of the crowd struggled to work out what he was saying.

Despite the sound issues throughout the show, the crowd went ballistic for the superstar’s biggest hits which included '1999', 'Little Red Corvette', 'Cream', 'Purple Rain' and 'Let's Go Crazy'.

As previously reported, Prince is rumoured to have been paid around $5 million for tonight's performance. After the slot was announced, the previously widely-available Saturday tickets sold out almost immediately."

Goes to show you that the man gains new fans everyday and can still sell out tickets no matter where he performs.

glad to see Morris & Jerome together. Every time I see Morris Day I laugh uncontrollably (he has that effect on me).

I went to see The Time in concert once and I laughed & laughed - with nothing being funny eek

Morris said "Jerome, go get me some sexy ladies to come up and dance". That made me sit down in my seat while all the girls were going wild, jumping up & down and waving their hands in the air so he would pick them. Jerome came down the auditorium aisle and came straight to me. I was like NO WAY so we played tug-o-war for a few seconds and I won.

This reminded me of that - sorry ...since it has nothing to do with anything here neutral lol

Setlist from http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2008/04/prince_played_c.html#more:

The Bird (performed by Morris Day) /
Jungle Love (performed by Morris Day) /
Glamorous Life (performed by Sheila E.) /
Instrumental Jam /
1999 /
I Feel For U /
Controversy (with snippet of “Housequake”) /
Little Red Corvette /
Musicology /
Cream /
U Got the Look /
Shh /
Anotherloverholeinyourhead /
Creep (Radiohead cover) /
The Arms of an Angel (Sarah McLachlan cover performed by backup singers) /
7 --> Come Together (Beatles Cover) /
Purple Rain /
Let's Go Crazy

Sheila looks great in the pic above. Wow! Like someone said last year when they were holding hands: "Prince, you goddamn cunt, marry her already, damn!"

Creep is the diamond in the setlist, imho.
"But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo" Strange lyrics for Prince to sing...

So, I'm guessing from the setlist that is was mostly a rock outing. Am I right?

On a side note, I guess comedian Katt Williams is right. You need haters in your life. Prince keeps kickin' ass while his haters do their job and hate.

I'm wondering if it is the same one he used for Forever In My Life/It from the SOTT film? (But I don't know if that was a Telecaster. And of course, there is not an image of it in the Org gallery.) It would interesting if it was the same--first the mirror heart on the keyboards, and then that guitar. hmmm

I didn't seem all that strange

'This is 4 why I wasn't born like my brother, handsome and tall' a la Lady Cab Driver isn't a million miles away...there are certainly some self deprecating lyrics here and there.

There was an aftershaw at the O2 (Indigo 16th of Sept) where he did a monologue about how he used hang out in the park when he was young with all the tall good looking guys in the hope that the girls they didn't want might get with him!

Is it possible we're talking about a Stratocaster rather than a telecaster?

I'm fairly sure he only played 'joy in repetition' once at the main shows at the O2 (and once/possibly twice at an aftershow) on the 14th of august...and he was playing a stratocaster, not a telecaster.

In case you haven't been paying attention, large venue Prince shows are heavy on the hits. Smaller venue prince shows are more eclectic. That's how it is.

Anyway, he just went on the most "general public" TV show ever and played a brand new song.

Too bad he's a dick & we can't watch it online.

He talks about this on the beautiful strange video in the interview with Mel B.

He basically says he's happy for people to do covers of his songs if they're doing it becasue they want to, but not happy if they're doing it because a record company/manager has told them to do it as a career move...

or something like that...it seemed fair enough to me

thanks for all the pix...we saw every band on this stage from the rail...on "Come Together" he walked to his far right past us as he soloed then on the way back he stopped directly in front of us to drive us wild...as far as the set-list i think it worked extremely well because all the first-timers heard a guitar great (think HOF, but for a whole show)

It's well worth a watch if you get a chance...

it goes something like this:

Mel B: can i do a cover of 1999 then?
Prince: you can do a cover of 1999 if i can do a cover of Wannabe
Mel B: So that's a yes?
Prince: No (Prince starts laughing)

then he explains what i mentioned before

I seriously doubt that Prince would use Botox (or any kind of plastic surgery) given the possible side effects and his religious beliefs. He may do other skin treatments, but I think he has too much expression in his face for it to be Botox'd.

He has lived a fairly clean life, no smoking, not a heavy drinker or druggie and doesn't seem to be much of a sunbather, so he doesn't have a lot of skin damage.

Creep is the diamond in the setlist, imho.
"But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo" Strange lyrics for Prince to sing...

So, I'm guessing from the setlist that is was mostly a rock outing. Am I right?

Wow, great pics. You know you can always count on Serpan for the best pictures, and he´s always sooo fast.

Prince and Sheila both really look good and amazingly young . Morris also looks OK but Prince and Sheila look at least ten years younger than they actually are.
I wonder what Prince´s secret recipe is.
Dieting ? Exercise ? Being in charge of his daily life ? Doing what he wants to do ? Lots of sleep or little sleep ? Having money ?
There must be some kind of secret, it´s not normal for a man born in 1958 to look that young.I bet he´s got a painting of himself somewhere in the attic, just like Dorian Gray.

surgery?

It's amazing what makeup can do! These people are pushing 50 and beyond....no one stays young forever, no matter who they are, and regardless of surgery, botox, or packed on makeup, your age will show, and theirs does!

Anyhow, thanks for the report and pictures. I'm sure it was yet another nite in Prince history to remember.

glad to see Morris & Jerome together.

Oh that's funny... he did the same to me one time because I was ignoring him! giggle

[snip] I just got through watching his performance of "Creep".

Ho-Lee shit!

I'll second that "Holy Shit!"

I'm going to have to make a revision after seeing/hearing that.

Prince is the only living musician that can gracefully unite the pure genius of Radiohead, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and Joni Mitchell all while remaining one of the absolute cornerstones of independence, originality and artistic integrity.

Or as someone said early on in the crowd, "Wow!"

I guess with this much musical talent it does perhaps make the many missteps seem that much wider.

But never mind that. The genius of this comes across even on a shaky cell phone nestled tightly within a massive crowd.

Imagine if this were shot professionally?

Eh. He probably wouldn't release it anyway. Just like "Small Club" or "Just My Imagination", it'll only ever exist through unofficial channels.

Hopefully this shit doesn't get cleansed from the Internet and nobody gets sued. wink

and actually, i wasn't talking about the cursing....i was talking about the "im a creep....im a weirdo" lyric...those are essential to the meaning/heart of the song...changing the lyrics IMHO ruin the song.

Everybody is going to love it or hate it or fall somewhere in between.

I loved it, I liked the lyric change because with that, he made it a little bit his own while not detracting from the fact that he's paying some form of homage to Yorke & Co.

That's what's great about covers, you can do what you like with them without causing too much damage (unless you really eff it up, which Prince is not likely to do...)

I sooo wish I could've been there live, but for now the tube will have to do until the Sheriff breaks up the party and sends us all back to our cubicles.

but your right, he does try to put his own spin on these covers but you can't do that at the expense of the lyric...especially if the changes make you look as if you don't understand the meaning of the words in the first place.

Sos, I see your point about song integrity. But in fairness, until I hear it, I need to see if if the minor alteration in lyrics changes the flow of the song drastically.

When I was here before
couldn't look you in the eye
it's just like an angel
skin makes you cry

you float like a feather
this beautiful world
you wish you were special
so do I

but you're a..(?).
you're a liar
what are you doin here?
you don't belong here

you don't really care
you just want to have control
you want a perfect body
you want a perfect soul
you want me to notice
yes you do
when you're not around

I wish you were special
yes I do
Cause I think you're special

Maybe I'm just a...
who to say, maybe we're the liars?
what are we doin here
we don't belong here

I agree about the Bonnie Raitt cover - I wasn't feeling that AT ALL. And I thought I would be offended by the change of lyrics for Creep, because I love the song and the lyrics. But after listening to it, he just made it completely his own and IMO it worked very well.
Prince probably could not have sung the lyrics straight up and have it come across as very earnest - not with his image. Even though I would have liked to have heard him call himself a creep!

What's wrong with you people???

He din't ruin anything, artists cover other artists live all the time, they change words, put their own perspectives in songs, that's the whole point of covers, to make it different, to add something else. When you sing live it's about how you connect with the audience, feel the moment, this isn't like Prince recorded this song and put it out there like an ipod comercial and took it to the top of the charts, this is about that Coachella night, that saturday night in the desert, he made all those people realize that this song, Creep, could be as meaningful to him as to them, that there is a real connection of Rock music to the Soul, a true message that in art there are no boundaries, it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from, it doesn't matter if you like underground music or commercial pop, that night was to have fun, together as human beings.

i walked into the office this morning and overheard people talking about their trip to coachella.

and then i heard " did you see Prince"
and the reply was " oh my god, he rocked it".

so of course, i had to jump in and ask a million questions.

The girl who is early 20's said she couldnt believe how great he was and that the crowd was enormous (by far the biggest for any of the artists) and that people were really into.

such a nice way to walk into work on a Monday....

OH: and she said that 'Creep' was incredible.

That's what's great about covers, you can do what you like with them without causing too much damage (unless you really eff it up, which Prince is not likely to do...)

Ya know Sosgemini, I totally respect your opinion and here's why. Musical NOOB that I may be (well, I actually don't ever listen to Bonnie Raitt but..) I never, ever knew that "I Can't Make You Love Me" was hers. So I tubed it up and gave it a listen. Beautiful song, very nice, Raitt is still not my thing tho'.

I listened to the trax back to back, Raitt first. I still prefer Prince's version and it's not because I'm a fan (w/ an n). I think the main reason is that it is one of the few tracks off Emancipation that is bearable (along with White Mansion and a very few others for a 3CD set!). I also really like the musical composition he resorted to, I like the Sitar and the overall softness that is felt. Fine, the whole "bedroom slash church" bit is a little too much, but hey, he's a freak.

Cheers erupt as Prince takes Coachella stage

By VANESSA FRANKO
The Press-Enterprise

http://www.pe.com/reports/2008/coachella/stories/PE_Fea_Daily_D_Coachella27_Prince.a394b4e2.html

By JAKE COYLE
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hHZkhoNrwVbH01YaLg9bjMauk5vwD90A3MIG0

He didn't say "creep?" confused That's a bit strange. I for one couldn't care less if he changes stuff, but Creep is the title of the song after all.

People talk about Prince playing it safe or being predictible. I never in a million years would've expected him to cover 'Creep' and having watched the clip, I thought he did an amazing job. It certainly wasn't a faithful cover he flipped it into his own thing.

I was amazed at his version of Little Red Corvette! Has he EVER played the solo for that? Seriously he always left it for Dez or Wendy or Miko or he didn't play it at all. Lucky bastards!

which IMHO is the whole point of the song...by changing the lyrics he changed the naivety/immaturity of the song which is it's genius. i never for a second thought that York was being sincere with the lyrics.

I just watched "Creep by Prince" lol I got RadioHead's lyrics alot easier than Prince's....I thought he wanted to clarify the meaning to something understandable....I don't "get" his lyrics.....I'd think more of the man if he had the (you know whats) to say the real lyrics....show how humble the man can be.....instead just more confusion on my part....but I'll keep the beautiful voice he uses to make those sounds that are so very close to the Purple Rain part (I think you called it Falsetto?) That was awesome!!!!

Have you listened to George Michael's version? I prefer that one the most. I really don't like it when Prince covers songs. I can probably count on one hand the number of his I prefer. Hated all those f*ckin' covers on Ecrapcipation (hated that album), totally not feelin' Creep (granted, I dislike the Radiohead version too). I do prefer Prince's A Case of U to Joni's but that's about the only one. I'm with SOS, I think a lot of times when he does covers he completely misses the 'spirit' of the originals--whether it be lyric wise, phrasing, or something else.

I thought his cover of I can't Make U Love me was good. He made it sound like Prince, without changing what made the song great in the first place.

My only problem with it was that I was totally sick of the song (as Bonnie did it) by the time Emancipation came out, and could barely stand to listen to it. lol

I actually liked One of Us better than the original.

But both were strange choices for covers. They were more or less new songs confuse it's like covering In Da Club or Umbrella. Why bother?

Both well said...
I believe he hit a home run with it. And many non-Prince fans I have heard/read and polled myself say the same thing "wow he killed it! Niiiice"

He did so because IMO:
1. Its a Radiohead song at Coachella - see the similarities? Also Radiohead is a band that year after year refuses to perform yet another one did...hmmm

2. He knew most fans at the show were young and knew this song...a song that many people grew up on - thus P made a major "connection" with 10's of thousands of individual (and mass) at that moment.

3. Prince is killer at doing some bad-ass covers (i.e Foo Fighters, Led Zepplin) and making them his own - thus the wow factor from so many.

Always interesting to see people realize he is all that and a bag of chips time and time again...
wink

Sos, I see your point about song integrity. But in fairness, until I hear it, I need to see if if the minor alteration in lyrics changes the flow of the song drastically.

I have this posted on a couple of threads now (sorry!) but here are the lyric changes:

When I was here before
couldn't look you in the eye
it's just like an angel
skin makes you cry

you float like a feather
this beautiful world
you wish you were special
so do I

but you're a..(?).
you're a liar
what are you doin here?
you don't belong here

you don't really care
you just want to have control
you want a perfect body
you want a perfect soul
you want me to notice
yes you do
when you're not around

I wish you were special
yes I do
Cause I think you're special

Maybe I'm just a...
who to say, maybe we're the liars?
what are we doin here
we don't belong here

(Falsetto)
shoo da da doo
sho wa hoo hoo
sho hoo hoo hoa
sho hoo hoa hoo

(kick ass guitar solo)

The first already has become this Coachella's most talked-about moment. Fans gasped when a certain somber chord progression signaled . . . a cover version of "Creep" by Radiohead. Yes, Prince did it, and he changed it from a dissection of self-loathing to an admonition to feel uplifted.

"I wish you were special," Prince sang, changing Thom Yorke's first-person wail into a second-person embrace. "I believe you are special." He also never sang the word "creep," as far as this critic could hear. That's not his kind of language.

Go ask Levi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_Seacer

In October 1998, Seacer (along with Tony M.) filed a lawsuit against Prince, claiming that Prince hadn't shared royalties that Levi and Tony were owed for songs they had co-written for Prince's NPG Publishing, including "Sexy M.F." and "My Name Is Prince". In the end Mosely and Seacer settled for approximately $40,000 each (apparently, not even enough to pay their legal expenses), having sued Prince for $800,000.

Except Prince hates it when others cover him. And if they dare change a line...

This performance was completely misguided and utterly insulting.

I repeat what I've said before: if he can't play a song (either his own or someone else's) without having to change the lyrics because they clash with whatever kooky opinions he's holding, he simply shouldn't play them. He's got a ton of JW-approved stuff lying around, he can play that.

Oh come on Prime, haven't they drummed it into your head yet, Prince is a BAD, BAD, TERRIBLE person!! lol And, people with a heart and a bit of common sense are soon laughed at, ridiculed and made to feel like lunatics on this site!

You're damn right he didn't need Morris and Jerome doing The Bird at Coachella, I'm not putting them down, but what would that add to his credibility at the present time, and you can bet your life hardly anyone there (apart from Prince fans) knew who they were. P gave them a vehicle to make money for the rest of their lives with The Time, and even if he does feel he has done them some disservice in the past (which I don't personally feel he has), he seems to try to make up for it time and time again!

That's for sure, and goes for ALL of us! It seems whatever may have gone on in the past, has been buried, forgiven and forgotten a long time ago - or they wouldn't be on the same stage together!

Cheers erupt as Prince takes Coachella stage

The Press-Enterprise

http://www.pe.com/reports/2008/coachella/stories/PE_Fea_Daily_D_Coachella27_Prince.a394b4e2.html

Sounds good, but Morris Day & Shelia E. @ Coachella??? People seemed to enjoy themselves, though!!!

Maybe not everyone is sick of "the same old, tired hits" afterall!!!

I agree, ain't it the truth? Oh well, that is what he will be known for, the old stuff, isn't it interesting that most people don't want to hear his new stuff? As i say, it is as it is. Too bad Morris never did anything new after all of these years; he did a cd i bought with a few new tracks on it, but other than that it is the same old stuff.

Prince is a good man....

Good eye Floor.

Isn't ironic that whenever Prince asks people on stage to dance with him 99% act nuts? As if they really need to prove that they are fonky by dancing like a madman "yeah, look at me Prance, I'm fonky as hell". It looks so silly.

Everybody goes insane. I don't know what's worse, dancing like a piece of wood or dancing like a lunatic. Why not something in between?
