After being bumped from Saturday's headliner's to support for Prince, Portishead's Geoff Barrow is angry that his band won't get the amount of assistance they need to put on an excellent sounding show. In an interview with BBC6, he said: "Prince is gonna turn up with a 40-person entourage. With the sound men not allowing us to soundcheck, then you end up with this horrible situation where you're playing to a shed load of Americans without a soundcheck... It could be awful. We've actually hired another two people just to make sure the sound is good... just to fight in our corner." The trifecta of Kraftwerk to Portishead to Prince should still end up being the weekend's highlight. I only hope that the people who show up only for Prince give more respect to Portishead than Rage Against The Machine's fans gave to Crowded House. | |

Portishead look to be on a collision course with Prince over their upcoming appearances at the Coachella Festival. The two acts will share a stage in the Californian desert this weekend at the annual gathering. However, Geoff Barrow from the Bristol avant-pop band says the last-minute addition of the US legend could scupper their preparations for the gig. "It was gonna be us and Kraftwerk, which was amazing for us to play with Kraftwerk", said the Portishead man. "Then I knew the tickets hadn't been selling well for the concert, so they put Prince in. Prince is gonna turn up with a 40 person entourage. "With the sound men not allowing us to soundcheck, then you end up with this horrible situation where you're playing to a shed load of Americans without a sound check. "For a band like us, a studio band, it's gonna be awful", predicted Barrow, who says the group have brought in new members of their touring team "to fight in our corner". Portishead release their comeback album, "Third", on Monday.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but how is Prince to blame for this? Shouldn't he be mad at the organizers for not promoting the event better to boost ticket sales, or ensuring that equipment and staff is available for their soundcheck. How is that Prince's problem? I don't get it. | |

However, they obviously weren't a big enough draw, so the organizers saw fit to bring in a money maker. They should be thankful that Prince will be there. His presence has brought a lot of attention to a festival that many people outside of Cali have never heard about. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination... | |

It's funny that the guy says; 'Then I knew the tickets hadn't been selling well for the concert...' Well, duh! That observation kind of proves that you were clearly no draw whatsoever, so the organisers have obviously hired someone who'd provide them with something to shout about. Portishead have created their own very generic sound and their comeback album is causing about as much stir as a cow mooing in a field somewhere. Prince is spoiling nothing for them whatsoever, they're as irrelevant as they always have been - blaming Prince for any potential irrelevance is just silly. | |

The point is that Prince is famous for doing stunts like walking in with 40 people and not letting others have sound check. Prince is famous as well for wanting the stage all to himself. Maybe the other artist was hinting that Prince was already wanting the stage cleared and such,we dont know the whole story. I say lets wait and see what progresses from this.If you think Prince is a perfect angel, I have to laugh at that one.  [Edited 4/25/08 20:55pm] I can see myself 98 years old and chatting on the org with cane and walker in hand plus going to tribute concerts cause that guy name Prince will be long gone and will have to sit next to the speakers just to hear the dam music because my hearing aid died | |

Portishead's CD titled "Dummy" from 1994 was an awesome collection of tracks. I have it. It was known for the song "Nobody Loves Me (Sour Times)". Very dark and yet groovy song. Great band.
