Prince, you're making it damned hard to introduce new people to your work

Yes, this is a Youtube Bitch thread.

A friend of mine's trying to get into Prince. I've supplied her with some good starter albums (SOTT, DM, Parade, etc.) but now she wants to see videos and concert clips. Therein lies the problem. I've got nothing to show her. No free methods like Youtube and no legal, paid-for methods to access anything for her. Much and MuchMoreMusic do not play Prince videos, so that avenue's out, and we don't have MTV or BET, so scratch that too. And it's been remarkably hard lately to download anything for some reason. shrug

Thanks Prince. What are you trying to do -stop new folk from digging you? I think it's working. confused

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

Well, explain that this is part of the fun of being a Prince fan.... I mean if you like anyone else it's too easy... Liking Prince, is like being on one long Treasure Hunt, cryptic clues, leads, rollercoaster highs and lows... it's exhilarating, frightening, and well worth the ride!! wink

Yep, if the music ain't enough for her to get into Prince then she never will. After all, it's all about the music. And if someone has to 'try' to get into somebody's music, then they may as well give up now. Becoming a fan of an artist is all about their work drawing you in somehow, not about you pushing yourself for an interest.

There's loads of stuff about if you care to look and if your friend really is that desperate, then there's stuff you can actually physically buy which will actually put money in Prince's pocket.

Are you sure this isn't just an invented scenario so that you could have a go about Prince and YouTube? hmmm

'Ey, y'know, I've never really been a big fan of the live recording of the extended Baby I'm A Star single, but I must say, that video sure is fun to watch.

well, you can get BET (at least from Rogers, in ON) but thats also very hot and cold
you cna pick up Live @ The Aladdin Las Vegas from best Buy, which is a great document, only a few years old.
The HITS video collection, SOTT the concert
these are all official dvds available at hmv/best buy etc.

Good luck

Riddle me this, Batman: If the audience is supposed to be satisfied with only audio recordings, why bother making videos at all? Secondly -how about concert clips or older, less-known videos like Violet the Organ Grinder or Automatic, or older interviews?

No, as a matter of fact. It isn't.

Of course a person has to try to get into an artist, especially if it's someone who isn't shoved in your face 24/7 like Beyonce or someone who goes out of their way to make themselves difficult to access -like Prince does.

Loads of stuff out there? You've never been to Kelowna, have you? Ordering stuff online is also out of the question for her as she doesn't have a credit card. Not everyone does, you know.

The HITS video collection, SOTT the concert These two unfortunately are not available around here, and customer service at HMV is so shit I really try to avoid that store.

Hopefully. I still haven't gotten the chance myself though, so I doubt there's much chance she'll get her opportunity either. Prince doesn't exactly swing 'round these parts very often. Not that I blame him, I wouldn't bring my show here either, had I one to bring. lol

I was going 2 make a new topic with this,,but...
...know I believe that P's music will live on through generation after generation. I was sitting at my computer desk the other day helping my freshly turned 13 year old niece w/her website. Her sitting beside me,as we was waiting on an update to her blog,I decided to click play on my WPlayer..'Raspberry Beret' started to play. My niece has never heard 'P' well not that I know of..and as the song continued to around the part of "she walked in through the out door.." She asked Whats the name of that song? I let it play into the chourous and hit pause. I told her the title and explained the song a bit more in depth to her (she just turned 13) She smiled and admitted that she had walked in through the out door.."i've done that before, she said with a little bit of proud embarrassment.. and I could tell she was hit by P and his music. I was very..well,I was thinking "hell yeah!..she digs it!" Then she asked me to play it again..and singing along. I am pretty sure she'll listen to P always as she grows up. It's all about the music....

My niece just turned 13 and heard 2 verses and chourus and loves him..

Sorry bout the rant..my point is that she just *heard* his music and thats all it took 2 turn her on 2 him.

all the same you have internet acess go to VH1.com and MTV.com videos there.

Music, listen to, with ears, eyes, optional.

But back in the days before internet Prince was a much easier man to find. You could walk into just abut any music store and find his work. Not so these days, and if you do, it's all Purple Rain and The Hits and that's it. Yes, even now after the comeback (and that's exactly what it was)

A lot of younger fans -myself included -would not have been able to get into Prince's music were it not for the aid of the internet, and that's the truth. I first started getting into Her Highness in 2000. Yeah, Prince was all over the place in those days. rolleyes Sorry, but the way the industry works with older artists, the only way you're going to get the goods on the Lil' Guy is online. Because unless you happen to live in a large city with a noteworthy black population, local stores sure as hell don't carry anything of his. And guess who doesn't live in those places? Most people. You know this, I know this, Prince sure as hell knows it. Which begs the question I asked before: does he not actually want new fans? Because the only way to sustain a fanbase is to grant newer people an easy way to access your work.

Watching things live would be great.

BUT

Prince does not now nor will he ever come to this city, and the nearest city he's ever come to was on the ONA tour and it was less than well publicized. By that I mean, the show was not announced until only a few days beforehand. As for videos of live events? Apparently we're not allowed to watch them, even for a fee. shrug
