Is Future Baby Mama Grammy worthy?

At first I questioned it but after sitting down with the headphones I realized that it is an amazing pop song. It won for best vocal performance aso I took note of the signature Prince sound with the layered multi-track vocals - the kind of incredible genius sound that we got in the first song on his first album. No artist can do this like Prince. Future Baby Mama has a title I cant stand but it is the perfect Prince song: flawless composition and structure, perfectly performed, and requires at least 15 plays before you get it all.

Congrats to Prince - he should have gotten more for Planet Earth.

I think it's terrific - One of the few really inspired cuts on PE, and it reminds me of the best moments of Emancipation.

I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

No. I guess this was an accumulated Grammy nod for past injustices.

Sure. It really is a good soundings song. I can see why the lyrics would irk people, but I look at them in a different way than others. shrug

The category was for best Vocal R&B performance, right?

Prince technically performed that song to perfection. Much better than everyone else nominated for that award in terms of control, light and shade and emotion. It's unfair to compare P's work now to his work of the past, but Planet Earth is a flawless album by the standards of any other artist.

Exactly.

Great track, but the Grammy was for Prince, not the song.

Sometimes I don't understand how songs get chosen in the first place, so I'm not one to judge.
I like that song. The first time I heard it, I got misty- I thought the concept was beautiful. touched redface

smooth, flawless and compromised

perfect pop from prince

I love this song, generally though I prefer an edgier Prince.

Looking at other nominees there's really no contest.

I agree.

But the Raheem DeVaughn song should have won.

I just looked @ the other nominees & I've never even heard any of the other songs lol But on it's own, Future Baby Momma is a lazy effort. I do like it, but it's not a great song. That said, there's lots of shit songs that have won grammies so I guess it is deserving in that sense. It's just nowhere near his best (or even "better") work...

It's a make-up call for all the great Prince songs that went ignored in the 80's. It's a strong track in many ways, but it's not exceptional, when compared against Prince's own work. I doubt it would be among the Top 25 Favorite Prince Songs for most Prince fans. Again it's a solid song, but it's curious how it's received recognition when so many superior Prince songs have gone ignored by the Grammys.

But really, in modern times Grammys are awarded to far lesser songs and far lesser "musicians" and "artists". The music to "Umbrella" by Rihanna was the demonstration track included with Apple's Garageband loop program, and that thing won an award! So if that is Grammy worthy then so is "Future Baby Mama".

No. This isnt Prince, it is an impostor. The Prince I know writes songs nobody else can cover because it is uniquely his. FBM is a sad relic from funk days of yore.
