Does Prince, among other US musicians prove that Americans are just far far better musically than other nationalities?

(THIS THREAD IS DEDICATED TO, AND IN HONOR OF, MIRRORSBESTFRIEND)

I mean, Prince, Jimi Hindrex, Duke Ellington, Frank Zappa, and Justin Timberlake can't all be flukes. There has to be something to that theory.

Anyways, I would appreciate your candid opinions.

Thanks.

the definition of what is Pop or popular music is determined by many factors; the US has always had greater influence in the realm of music compared to other nations, hence the prevelance of their music.

there are places in the world where Prince is not known or not very popular because of the tastes of those people.

music, like literature or any other form of art, involves individual subjectivity, hence to say "better" is, well rolleyes

I would think that some countries look at music/entertainment as a job and commercialized it, whereas certain other countries just look at music as culture and a form of worship. But with the westernization of a lot of other countries, they follow this pattern because the entertainment industry is big money nowadays. Ever heard of 'The Twelve Girls Band' they travel outside of China and play concerts and promote their CD's for American dollars.

That's just my theory, which I'm sure may not be completely accurate and maybe only a small fraction of the bigger picture (...if it does have any relevance).

I believe that in some respects appreciation (in this instance, music) is based on what you're familiar with; so, in other countries they would probably feel that their music is better than ours because it is what they are accustomed to. ?????

fully agreed. in addition, Prince himself was rejected by the so-called Pop world of the US. that's why he starting writing songs like in2 the light. as for the comment about running thangs, y'all dominate thangs, and some times not righteously. it's gotten to the point that many nations have let go of their indigenous sound just to sound american and have a chance 2 crack the market. if it's not about booty shakin' or baby this baby that...lawd knows what will happen.

No it just has to do with the English language being the most common language in the world. Hence why most Popular musicians come from The United Stats, England, Canada or Australia. I think that's all it has to do with... Which is shame because we're probably missing out on some incredible musicians, just because we cant understand what they're singing.

with u i also agree. as u said, the hegemony of English in music has limited the types of music as well as messages the world is exposed to.

in addition, "American" music is the product of many roots. For example, Blues and Gospel have their roots in musical traditions brought over by the slaves from Africa.

Another factor could be that in the U.S. there are opportunities and freedom that could allow a pursuit of a career in music. In some underdeveloped countries people need to get a means of living which requires a lot of their time just to get the basic necessities of life. In China for example, I thought they work the fields from sun-up to sun-down thus, that would mean their whole life is centeed around making their living. I don't know, just a thought...

'tis truth that ye reason. the music industries in the developing worlds are not as strong as in the US. funny thing though, is that there, one is flooded with music from the US, and certain countries have even introduced legislation to balance local w/ US music on the airwaves.

No, it means that most Americans just have their heads so far up their own asses that they don't bother with talent outside their own borders until they hear about it on Mtv or Access Hollywood.

There is a world outside America. It's actually been around for quite a while.

Agree, also. I noticed that the Korean shows they sing, dance, and dress Americanized. Personally, I don't think they match doing hip-hop and all, but they pull their influence from the U.S.

Even Bollywood (dance routines) in the movies are a combination their indigenous music/dance, hip-hop, and something else (saw a special about that). And I think that they have become popular outside of India as well.
