Imagine Prince's 80's catalogue in surround sound

I recently bought a top dvd player and listening to the amazing sound of dvds makes me made that Prince's catalogue isn't like this.

Anyone heard the zeppelin dvd through good speakers? stunning

Prince has on of the greatest catalogues of music ever and it's a travesty that it is in the state it is.

Don't get me wrong i think the original lps sound fine; just not great; Prince deserves the BEST treatment of his work imo.

Does anyone know if WB have been interested in doing anything like this? I thought they owned the masters?

How dare you think of surround sound!

Stuff that was recorded in plain normal stereo that may need a 'remaster' (conservative meaning) was never intended to be put into this hype-format of multichannelism.
Stereo is hard enough to get right, let alone the situation of 5.1 or worse.
See the discussions about speaker placement and subwoofers... smile
Then there's the data-reduction for the common multichannel formats (yes, Dolby is like MP3).

So you must not confuse good sound with multichannel sound.

OMG Yes. Imagine Lovesexy in surround sound. Even after all these years...20 I think..wow, when you listen to it on good headphones you can hear things you hadn't heard before. So imagine. Imagine. omfg

I agree; i just bought the vinyl and i think it is very well produced. The cd is crap. Imagine a great remaster at least on a good system; that would be awesome.

People don;t give Prince the respect he deserves as a producer beacuse of the sound of his albums; in fact he's great; it's just that he's a bad engineer and never hired anyone great. e.g he recorded DM himself and has also mixed full albums himself.

MJ on the other hand had the best engineers in the world mixing his shit sad

I have the old laserdisc of the Sign O The Times film imported from Japan and the sound on that is just immense,from beginning to end.I hope sometime that Prince would release the film on Dvd here domestically as a Special Edition as well as some of his other concerts.New and older stuff from the vault.Peace!

SOTT already has come out professionally done in 5.1 with a new film transfer on DVD.

DVD-Audio or Superaudio formats are better quality than CD or vinyl and are multichannel [like the new Love (Beatles) DVD-audio album (which also includes the normal compressed dolby 5.1 signal as well)]... but it seems only audiophiles caught on, and even some audiophiles don't understand how to actually hear DVD-Audio (you have to actually hook up each output of the player (6 outputs) to your receiver. It does not flow through any single digital cable like a dolby 5.1 soundtrack does.

I'd prefer if it just didn't sound so tinny on CD. And I don't mean that I want it re-mastered. Just a new digital transfer, a la Ultimate would be good. I don't want them re-writing history with new mixes, etc. Too much temptation to make mix it the way it would sound if it were done today. Just a new transfer is all I ask.

I need some advice from you please

I am looking to upgrade my speakers, amp and cables

so i need three sets of 2 cables for surround? I know i started the thread but i actually haven't got surround at home yet. I am trying to sort it out. I am a bit confused.

I have a technics 5 disc cd player that can play surround sound(just got a correct ddv player to use). I have a technics mk5 and i just ordered a graham slee pre-amp.

I want to listen to audio(cds) and dvds through the same speakers a swell as listening to my turntable. I don;t know how to set everything up?

any help would be great

ULTIMATE IS RE-MASTERED!

It sounds great too compared to the original cds; although nowhere near what those tracks could be. 1999 the track is cleaned up as well as LRC. The drums sound clearly better and more prominent. I do think the second disc is too compressed though

i understand what you're saying about re-mixing; i agree but the remixes should be a bonus disc like deep purple did with machine head.

Some of the audio equipment you mentioned is for playing records. I don't see how aa cd player can be equiped for surround unless it is a dvd player as well. CD's are not in surround. But they can be processed to be.

First you need a receiver that has dolby prologic II or above in order to artificially spread cd's (2 tracks) to a surround sound speaker system (5 tracks).

The system can't play dvds without the dvd player but now i have one it should. I need the cables to connect the surround speakers and currently i can't have both my turntable and dvd player plugged into the amp. I obviosly need some sort of adaptor but i am unsure what
