Prince releases diss Track as Battle With Fans Gets Funky

From Rollingstone.com

As you may have read, as part of their copyright crusade, Prince’s legal staff recently demanded that all images of the Purple One be removed from specific fan Web pages. Several sites banded together to form Prince Fans United, there was a brief pause in the action and now … a diss track.
In response, Prince registered the Web domain name “Princefamsunited.com” and posted a seven-minute funk jam called “PFUnk,” alerting fans to its presence on fan site message boards. The song makes no secret of its target: “The only reason you say my name is to get your fifteen seconds of fame, nobody’s even sure what you do,” Prince sings. “I don’t care what people may say, I ain’t gonna let it ruin my day.” Toward the end, Prince tells his fans, in his famed helium-like “Camille” voice, “I love all y’all, don’t you ever mess with me no more,” before taking out all his anger on his guitar. Prince goes as far as calling one person, likely a member of the PFU, “a big fat punk,” and threatens someone called “Weemolicious” by singing “Look here Weemolicious, you and your boyfriend, lemme tell you somethin’ right now, you run up on me again with words or otherwise, I’mma knock both you punks out.” He also sings that he wants digital music to “disappear.”

How did the fans, and the PFU, take to the diss track? With open arms and, surprisingly, dropped jaws. As one poster on the Housequake.com board said, echoing the general response, “It really is head and shoulders above anything on [Planet Earth] or 3121.” Another poster thought they discovered an unearthed B-side from 1987, if not for the topical lyrics. Even the union that gets the brunt of Prince’s bile, the PFU, celebrated the track they helped inspire.

Still, the question remains: Why did Prince’s team target specific Web sites and ask for photos of everything from Prince-inspired tattoos to album-cover images to be removed? Could it be that the sites penalized were bootlegging and file sharing concerts, or diverting traffic from Prince’s official site, 3121.com? Avera denies both claims, saying there’s no file sharing on the boards, and that all the sites route traffic to 3121.com when possible. The sites in question claim they were singled out because they operate message boards that are sometimes critical of the star. Prince does have a history of unleashing his purple wrath on online boards: He terminated the NPG Music Club’s message board, an official paid service for diehard fans, shortly after the release of 2001’s Musicology. “I signed in one day, everything was fine,” Karen Avera, spokesperson for PFU and Housequake moderator, said. “The next day I went and everything was gone. No warning.” Avera speculates negative reactions to the album on the board — which is similar to some of the fan criticism Prince’s Planet Earth received just a few months ago — was to blame.

The fan sites say they have always cooperated with the Paisley Park lawyers — that is, until now. When fan photos of Prince’s London concert marathon started surfacing on message boards, the lawyers asked that the photos be removed and replaced with shots provided by Prince-hired photographers. The fan sites gladly replaced the pictures. Now, however, the lawyers are demanding those photos be taken down. To date, Housequake.com has not removed the images, and since the site is based in Holland, Avera is unsure of whether the cease-and-desist letters are within their jurisdiction.

When Rolling Stone talked to John Giocobbi, the Managing Director of copyright protection agency Web Sheriff, regarding Prince’s battle with YouTube, Giocobbi said, “Prince has always been a very independently minded artist and kind of bold and pioneering in a way. It goes back largely to the kind of promise he had with Warner Bros., when he lost the right to use his own name and then he became The Artist Formerly Known As. And once he recovered his scars from that battle, he was a lot more savvy as a result of that too. And he’s a lot more kind of protective about his rights.” When asked whether the Web Sheriff is just going after illegal bootlegging of Prince videos, Giocobbi admitted that, “In essence we’re going after everything, which is why it’s kind of pioneering.”

As far as Avera is concerned, those message boards are going nowhere. “Oh, we’re going to keep the message boards,” Avera promises, “because the boards go far beyond just talking about Prince’s music. It’s a connection where a lot of people worldwide have come together to talk and make friendships.” Despite feeling unappreciated, and the threat of a looming lawsuit, Avera swears that she, and the PFU, will remain Prince fans. “With everything that’s going on, we continue to listen to his music. We’ll continue to buy his music, because we appreciate his music.”

A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

Also, P has to be hurting over RS headlining this as a "battle with fans". That's the kind of tagline that has legs.

Put it to you like this Prince, if people talking crap about you can get you to make tracks as funky as that, with the Camille voice and everything, then we should all reverse the psychology as much as possible and have little to nothing good to say about you

That’s a nasty track, funky

But RS should take that pic of you and the symbol down, then again they have lawyers also

It took making him mad to get some REALLY OLD SCHOOL FUNK out of him again. Because I wasted $15.00 on Planet Earth. I listened to it for a couple of days and it never really did anything for me. I'll be glad when all this stuff works it self out. I will remain a fan through it all. I don't think any of us will ever understand what goes on with him because he never really explains to us his reasons. Some sort of explaination would be good. But I guess he really doesn't have to explain his self because he's Prince. confused

I think chalking all of Prince's fucked-up moves and nutty behavior to merely being a reaction to fans criticizing him is a bit asinine. I just think he's a bit insane and more than a bit of an asshole...but then I've always thought that lol lol.

PFU has definitely been doing its work... nod

He doesn't explain himself because then the whole world would see how much he contradicts himself. Some of us "die-hards", figured it out a long time ago, and the rest of us still can't seem to take their rose colored's off when it come to him.....and he knows that. shake

I can't believe this. I don't know about the other sites but I know that Prince.org has always been respectful of the Artist. Now I think he's just being a jerk.

Thank you Rolling Stone for at least having a clue.

I really think Prince is losing his mind. What harm have we done him? We still runb out and buy his perfumes, concert tickets, and albums. I can't dig his negative vibe.

I think this is entirely about criticism. Prince's past proves it. He reads the message boards devoted to him, and when people say negative things about him, his actions, or his music, he gets pissed. Why do you think he force fed us his 90's outtakes on the Crystal Ball set?

Anyway, look at this post from his own site over 10 years ago...

I agree with you. Prince does not like to be called on his crap, whether it's in the form of a song, or his sometimes unreasonable actions. And when he IS called on it, and the person is correct, he gets pissed and take dramatic actions. I'm willing to bet it is the same way in his friendships and romantic relationships as well.

I have to agree. Whgere our comments were censored on the forums at NPGClub, we have the FREEdom to scorn or adore on these fan sites. Gosh, who can forget all that sugary syrup the staff posted about the Artist.

Prince has ALWAYS been heavily criticized on fan websites, big and small...if mere criticism drove his actions he'd never have time to do anything else except react to criticism. Not to mention we can still criticize the little fella all we want even without imagery of Prince or videos or even without posting photos of our Prince tattoos lol lol...we'd actually proberly start criticizing him more.

He may not like the criticism of fighting back against his ridiculous lawsuit, but he's not gonna sic a team of lawyers on a website because the members didn't like Planet Earth. Come on now lol...

He should just stop reading the damn boards if he's so sensitive to comments. I've learned not to do it now.

I happen to like Planet Earth, so I didn't bother with the negative threads on the album. I like a lot of you guys here, so I'm now trying to stay out of any Jacko topics where you all tear him down. It took me a while to learn to block out the negativity, but I assume someone like Prince who has better and more exciting things to do than spend hours online every other night shouldn't be taking it to heart as much.

PfUnk may be a great song, however, Out of a zillion songs, there are a handfull, we as fans, could listen 2 or live without, Only because there are so many styles of emotions to choose from....However, I hope Prince goes back into his velvet think tank, without the worries of bad rumors and streety
back-stabbing opinions...so that Prince can write about how he really feels most of the time. In Love with Love, making sexy music for Lover's, and sharing his concerns about the impending unity of the world.

So thanx to all of the inspirers that provoked him, but I as a fan would rather hear different lyrics...

I like Prince happy.

Last Night, I spent another lonely Christmas...Darlin' Darlin' U shoulda been there.~Prince.

neutral I dunno, in his defense the song was a fair rebuttal. it must suck to get called out/hated on by a bunch of faceless people on the internet. but in everyone else's defense he has to start coming to a conclusion with this fiasco, i recommend that he listen to his own "resolution" track and take it from there.

I can aggree and verify some of this statement, Yes Prince has nutured and become bold and defensive, since WB dispute. I have have been on forums since 96 and have never dled any Prince content, like bootlegs or lists.

But with pictures i can agree dat is breachin copy right, i mean its basic contractural knowledge. Prince definetly has legal right, to pictures of O2 performances, it is fundemental. So from this somethin more ilegal can develop.

None have been hosted by this site though, letalone continually posted by members. No grainy videos from YouTube either. Why go after sites with active forums and not sites that specifically host galleries of pictures, many of which are grainy photos taken from concerts? How do album covers fit into as well? Gonna demand that Amazon take those down too?

I think chalking all of Prince's fucked-up moves and nutty behavior to merely being a reaction to fans criticizing him is a bit asinine. I just think he's a bit insane and more than a bit of an asshole...but then I've always thought that lol lol.

PFU has definitely been doing its work... nod

nod

Prince is out of his fucking tree crazy -has been for quite some time. But then, that and the diva behaviour and the all-around assholery is just something a person has to come to expect from The Kid. Not that I'm not pissed off about this whole mess, but I can't honestly say I'm surprised. The music's what I'm here for.

A person who really doesn't have all their marbles, when surrounded by Yes Men, will try to get away with just about anything.

I guess I agree and yet I disagree...
Prince needs to understand that it's the cost of fame...you become "exposed" and opinions are like a$$holes everybody has one...if his ego has become irrevocably bruised then seek some therapy...by the way I will only charge a nominal fee if he's interested...lol
but don't get mad at the people who with your "flaws and all" (and we fans have some of our own) not only buy your music but support you when the world thinks you're crazy...
While I like the "rebuttal" songs "music"...as for the lyrics...well if you bite the hand that feeds you (or your ego) then you won't get fed anymore right???

I love this org., but I am about to become black balled I fear.

First of all, go here and read

http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/chapter9/9-a.html

It's an easy read, so read it all.

The question is, does the org cross the line of fair use of images and content? Well, I don't know. Let's look. Would I have ever came here in the first place if it were not called prince dot org? No. It was the name of it that drew me here, and so it was his name that did this. His images and his words sells magazines and cd's.

When this happens, circulations make revenue simply based on his work. Many times he does not get paid for it. Well, fair use of copyright law creates a safe haven for publications to use limited amounts of his image in their magazines.

The four factors judges consider are:

the purpose and character of your use
the nature of the copyrighted work
the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and
the effect of the use upon the potential market.
http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/chapter9/9-b.html

Does the org abuse any of these principles?
I believe that purpose and character are okay here,
I think the nature of the copyrighted work is also okay here,
I do, however think that the amount of content, and in that, the amount of images and such, could be in question, simply because OF
the effect of the use on the potential market.

If you are an artist, and you have ever had someone else make money off of your labor or gain recognition for your work, then you would understand how hurt feelings, anger, and law suits are so prevailant in this business.

and this 2, shall pass.

i’ve only just found out what ‘fams’ means..so this is how Prince treats his family?? as much as he’s such a fantastic musician, singer and perfomer he lives on another planet and he just doesn’t know how to treat those around him.. and now he’s completely undoing all the good he’s done over the last few months..it’s such a shame..

the track; absolutely fantastic, i can’t stop listening to it…but the lyrical intentions absolutely suck…so all the fams are picking on/using him…
oh let’s all feel sorry for Prince…grow you silly man…

what would happen if all these people you’re trying to censor, control and manipulate stop buying your records and concert tickets…

everytime you start doing really well you then do something to totally alienate everyone, particulary those who love and support you and your work..we’ve been here before haven’t we?

but this time you’ve gone way too far..

Yeah, Prince laid out his definition of "fams" a few years back.

"Fams" are people that absolutely agree with everything Prince says or does.

"Fams" are the ones that even now support him in his ridiculous crusade against fan sites that primarily keep his name out there to be discussed.

"Fams" are people that get sucked in and because Prince dusted off his "Camille" voice, popped a bass a few times and did a little solo think that "DAMN!!!! HE TOLD THEM!!!! WOOO HOOO!!!!! IN YOUR FACE, PFU!!!!"

"Fams" quite simply are purple sheep that blindly follow their shepherd whereever he may lead them. Even if it's off a purple cliff.

After listening to the track a few more times, I think it's true that the song is not directed to fans, but to Perez Hilton, as stated by another orger on some other thread. A look at the lyrics certainly backs that up as he seems to be addresing one person in particular, not a "community".

Don't get me wrong. I think his actions as of late are shady at best. If he really just "wanted to give fans exclusive content", it's quite easy to do WITHOUT alienating the people who stuck by him thru the other bullshit.

Great tune. It has been 20 years since he's done something like that track!

Do we have to piss of this guy to get him to make great music?

It all stems from that mind-numbing, intellect-choking, behavior-warping, bane-of-mankind elixir traditionally known as "organized" religion... There's no other explanation for this nonsense from this dude... I knew the minute he started changing lyrics to his old jams to express religious characters and themes, we as fans OF HIS MUSIC, were in for some bullsh*t...

That's one on my biggest problems with people who go "holy" (whatevea the frick that's 'sposed to mean), they become 12-pound-road-lizard crazy with some bizarre brand of fanaticism; sleeping in sterilized chambers, dissin' old friends & fam, or start talking about sh*t like "staros" at they live gigs...

I WILL alwayz continue to enjoy Prince's MUSIC, but dude can take his tired religious fanatic pimp-game and stick it right in between the holes on them notorious pants of his...

I'm through with this crazy sh*t.

You have to develop thick skin and get used to that kind of behavior from people in the music business and life in general. This man has been in the business for over 25 years, I truly question whether mere criticism of a record is what really prompted all of this.

I agree with you. Prince does not like to be called on his crap, whether it's in the form of a song, or his sometimes unreasonable actions. And when he IS called on it, and the person is correct, he gets pissed and take dramatic actions. I'm willing to bet it is the same way in his friendships and romantic relationships as well.

nod So true. Could it be he has barely any friends left because he quickly gets rid of the ones that try to criticize him? Could it be that both of his marriages didn't work, because his wifes started to question his actions?
Even in his songs he likes to blame others, while it's never his fault.

My advice for Prince: Instead of sueing and getting rid of everybody who dares to criticize you, you should take a long hard look at the man in the mirror!!

Just a comment about some words upthread a ways...

for the purposes of this situation, HQ, PrinceFams, and prince.org are united with a singular purpose to make Prince call off the lawyerly dogs and respect our Constitutional rights. There are of course differences among the sites and what we each offer, past and present, but I don't want to see any anti-HQ or anti-PrinceFams arguments unless you're conversant in the full facts, which, because we haven't (yet) released the C&Ds and other emails, no one outside the PFU folks and our counsel truly are.

Please guys, stay focused on the macro issues right now. There's plenty of time to debate the minutae when everything comes out in the wash, but right now if you can avoid speculating about the details, it would be appreciated. Still, you're free to discuss anything you like (this IS prince.org after all, and that's the point of the forums!) but your solidarity is helpful to our efforts right now, is all.

Thanks!

It's time to go to court and find out, isn't it.

You know, I don't think anyone ever wins in court except for the lawyers in these situations. I have encountered such threats from businesses in where I have used their business names and logos in works of art and design. I have had personal letters show up in the mail as well as cease and desist emails.

I have folded at times, and at other times I have not.

and this 2, shall pass.

Why oh why was that put-down of a song placed on the protest website? Prince must be laughing his ass off. He knows some of his fans are so obsessed that they will hand him their self respect just to get some attention from him. Is there a reason that the PFU folks didn't tell Paisley Park to stuff it when given this track? I mean, c'mon. He's completely insulting ya'll and you help him by sucking up at every turn. Makes me question the "mission" of PFU if they can't even stand up and do the right thing this early in the game.

People are logging in here saying the Prince is a hypocrite, well, at least he's sticking to his guns. How hypocritical is it for PFU to, on one hand, complain that Prince is treating them like crap, and on the other hand, to post his rant against them? It's almost like an abusive relationship at this point and I just don't get it. Could someone please explain the logic to me?

If that song is an "insult", then i'm missing something.
It's barely a "response".

It's posted because in the fairness to everyone that's not spending every hour on the hour checking, reading and responding to every single post, article or thread, it's easier to go to the site and read what's current news.

Posting that track was just that. Current news. His only "response" i might add. Most people (that aren't fams) are laughing at the fact that Prince would call that "a response".

Good luck with your stance and just to let you know its not only in the USA that these cease and desist threats are abrogating peoples rights.

Those same rights are in danger in the UK, albeit without a written constitution

Prince has always said he wants his music to speak loudest for him. Guess what!! some of us love it...why cuz, he told Pfu and who ever else where to go...if u know what I mean. I respect Prince for many reasons...as it relates to this subject matter he is "standing on solid ground" and that is what he believes. If u don't stand 4 something u will fall 4 for any and all bullshit i.e the stuff that Pfu is putting out. I support Prince all the way. Go head!! Go head!! Go Head!!!!! for Prince and the PrinceFamsUnited. We up and running now. Hey!! Hey!! Hey!!!

It doesn't mean anything to you that Prince is blatantly lying in response to what PFU has to say? He's calling the guy who made this site that enabled you to post your fammyfam stuff a pirate and a thief.

its just thier opinion, freedom of speach what your saying Prince is denying you.

Anyway that is the same opinion of mine, how many comments as been left on the PFU site err under 2000 last i looked, thats a lot of Prince fans isnt it.

Admit it Prince is Laughing at you oh and my other opinion is Housequake is shafting the other sites involved just to get what they want.

Cause i all i hear is how Housequake is in talks with Princes people what about the other sites no mention of them in talks or am i missing something.

I think what she was trying to say that is in light of the current events, what is the point of posting a dig at housequake. Karen Avera is speaking on behalf of all three sites, not just housequake. The negotiations are for all three sites, not just housequake. In fact, if you read alot more of the press interviews, prince.org is mentioned by the spokesperson as well. remember this fight is on behalf of THREE sites, not just housequake wink

Even if it's off a purple cliff.

confused
No...that's YOUR definition of the term "fam" and you use it as a derogatory term. The way you point your finger at "them" says alot about you.
and for the record, IF in fact Pfunk is defending freedom of speech then I am 100% behind them but as someone else pointed out I believe the truth is somewhere in the middle. My guess is it is more about images and actual content rather than just typing his name or hindering actual discussion.
But we will see.....worst case scenario, Prince is trying to stifle all discussion about him...that will suck and Prince will be an asshole for it but am I gonna get all pissed off about it? NO, why? because I am able to separate myself from a situation that really has no bearing on my real life. I will just go listen to some of his music and not sit and bitch about how my favorite musician is not my favorite human being.

I have had personal letters show up in the mail as well as cease and desist emails.

From Rollingstone.com

Prince is bored and needs to get married and have some babies before he turns 70, kick the bucket and leaves all his money to his greedy lawyers. As far as his music, I can take it or leave it. Real life is more important to me, not some music cd from a man who sounds unhappy.

Prince hasn't been my favorite human being since ... well, I'm not sure he ever was my favorite human being. Look, I really don't give a shit about what type of person prince is, as long as he brings the music and the shows.
Where I draw the line tho is when he starts to limit my rights as an individual. The internet is the most important medium that we have, because normal people like you and me get to create it, and we get to talk back.
The traditional powers that be don't like that, they just want us to consume whatever type of crap they feel like unloading on us, and beyond that we get to sit down and shut the fuck up.
It could be your position that this is just Prince, a guy with a guitar, doing this. But it is a matter of principal and precedent. The internet is still evolving quickly, and so far the only people making the laws about what we can and cannot do on the net are written by traditional industry.
It's time that normal people like us push back a bit. This is not about Prince for me, it's about making clear that we will not have fundamental rights further eroded simply because someone wants to make a few more dollars.

I agree with Mr.Nelson because its his right. If it wasn't, it would be that big of a deal to those whose oppose him in this "battle".

I'm no JW, but he may be doing this to fight "Idol Worship" as well.(in regards to the photos). It is just an assumption of mine....not the truth regarding his reasoning for stopping the photos.

You'll never be rich enough to be the fan you wish to be? What does the amount of money you have have to do with being a fan? I dont have enough money to buy his perfume either....nor do I wish to.....nor do I think Im any less of a fan because of it. Nor did I agree with Prince when he used to call out the NPGMC members in the front row of the concert and then guilt trip everyone else in the venue for being "so far away." We're in the nosebleed section because we're normal people who can't afford your expensive clubs and tickets, Prince. That dosnt mean we're less devoted. In fact this entire discussion of devotion is making me sick. If Im not devoted to Prince come hell or high water, so what? At the end of the day, he's just a singer. And I have my own life: marriage, studies, and problems to deal with. Prince takes his seat in the back. Love his music, but I think he has serious problems if he thinks PFUnk is going to make us cry.

I think part of the problem understanding everything thats going/gone in is the issue has become fudged with all sorts of side discussions and the original points have been lost

Also there is a great deal of information not yet in the public domain like legal documents

I have not seen anyone take issue with the artists point about having control over his own intellectual property

Its the demands to take down the princefansunited website and the demands to remove photographs that the people who took them own the rights to that oversteps boundaries

Friends u have point(s). But anyone knows dat pictures 2 some extent are copyrighted. We all know dat we discuss bootlegs and know they exist, but dat i think is acceptable, as long as there no conspiracy 2 infulence 2 buy them, dat definetly unacceptable.

For example Prince fans is in 'breach' by motion capture of some of 'Princes' videos, nodoubt as so goes for most Prince sites.

But there is the argument, dat it may be acceptable, 2 discuss Prince, furthermore nothin else. Dats y Prince org is one of the oldest Prince Sites, cuz it is just dat, a forum.

Yes, but the law as it stands before the internet of today are OLD and need to be revised or need new laws to protect the copyrights of musicians / artists.
There is freedom of speech and libel laws. So they need to be reworked so everyone is happy and no one feels abused. Right now it is not balanced and hence we are having issues.

Prince: .... shut up already, damn!

what is interesting is that those that call themselves fams r the ones that can't c any wrong in all this. does he have the right 2 protect his copyrights, surely. but can those that call themselves fams take a break and c where ur rights r being violated? secondly fams-what's the difference between being a fam and fanatic? cause some of y'all r speaking like true fanatics. and those that have been sighted as fanatics in this very thread and others, i do c some of ur points. just cause i'm not in the front row doesn't make me less of a fan than u. but having said that it's a good reason i'm not in the front row cause i would hurl something at that man 4 playing purple rain still big grin

3rdly: whatever choice someone makes whether 2 continue 2 support prince either in sales or concert going is their own choice.

the truth will b told and 4 those that fear that xposure of it ..oh well! u won't ever silence me. the innocent have voices that need 2 b heard and u will hear them

I am not a die-hard Prince fan like I used to be. Art is subject to criticism though, If I don't like certain Prince albums, I don't buy them. Simple and plain. People don't like ALL my music. C'est la vie.

I think that it is sad that all of his images and content are taken down off of the fan sites. I truly do. I missed all of his videos on You Tube. I used to watch them a lot. Get nostalgic over them. Because some of those vids were from when I was a teen. Times were better then than now.

I'll never b rich enough to b the fan I wish I could b but I can say Ive seen a true master musician in my lifetime!

Excellently stated, Nep... Prince has no idea of the level of asinine accomplishment he has reached in making me, a truly longtime die-hard fan of his music, begin to consider NOT wanting to listen to him anymore...

I'm a bit stunned at the number of fans here that seem incapable of realizing when they've been insulted... "The only reason you say my name is to get your 15 seconds of fame" ... WTF?? Who the hell does this dude really think he is?

And as far as the speculation of the PFUnk cut being an olive-branch type of offering, I think the lyric, "I love all y'all ... don't mess with me no more," was casually tossed in as a face (and potential future income) saving afterthought... Prince's REAL sentiments are probably more accurately portrayed by the "don't mess with me" lyric and his recent fan-contemptuous behaviors...

Yeah, the music is great -- including the PFUnk jam -- but that don't make up for, or excuse this dudes action toward the very people who have been instrumental in his success... Somebody needs a freakin' ego or reality check.

This is all a part of his Napoleon complex.....

Napoleon complex is a colloquial term describing a type of inferiority complex which is said to affect some people who are physically short. The term is also used more generally to describe people who are driven by a perceived handicap to overcompensate in other aspects of their lives. This term is also known as Napoleon syndrome and Small Man syndrome.

Being all of 5'7 I'd like to say that sometimes a short person's issue has nothing to do with his size. Every once in a while you'll find a person that is just an asshole, this whole PFUNK situation being a perfect example.

I don't REALLY get some of these fans. I don't understand you peeps and the logic. "That ?rince dis song was funky yet he disses us "his fans" in it and I STILL support him." What kinda shit is that? He is "suing" the fan sites.

Is this a culmination of events: the website, the song. the legal actions-- not abuse? I believe that it is so. Boycott his music and his every business endeavor for a year or two. You are HIS fans. He showed you what you are worth to him...a bunch of "poor punks" worthy of keeping silent.

I like P's music. I like to come to the org and talk about the music. I don't really give a flying fart about his personal life or how he runs his business. So now he is going to sue the sites, which endangers them. If the site is shut down, then I can't talk about the music with fans. That cramps my style.

I never really was into the pictures. Really didn't care to see them. I cruised through them a few times out of curiosity, but I really don't give a fart about taking copyrighted images. I just want to talk about the music.

Now, no one is talking about the music because we are fired up because the site is endangered by P's threat. That double cramps my style.

Damn P! I can live without the org, but I shouldn't have to. Read this you overgrown kid. Don't abuse the power of your wealth by threatening these little web sites. (this must be some kind of size issue with him. I guess that is what happens when your stack of money gets taller than you are)

Stop cramping my style little man.

If you don't want digital reproduction.... stop digitally producing.

It's that simple.

Other wise I'm about to unleash some paradies without mercy!

love your music man, don't stop the music.

and this 2, shall pass.

I agree. I'm beginning to see that shit too!
I agree with one other fan that said, "Prince, just shut up and play!"
I'm enjoying the track though! biggrin I love it when anger can bring out some of the genius and best in artist! "Shut up, and play Prince!"

PRINCE doesn't need to shut up.

I LOVE the emotion and expression he puts in his music especially if it is based on where he is at and what he is experiencing in his life at that moment.

I hear "PFUnk" and I hear the same message in "Dolphin"

Okay, whatever Prince doesn't need to shut up. I mean, there are times when he doesn't say much. And, then there are times when he says too much!
I'm one of the ones who'd love to see him support other artists from the 80s and vice versa. It's like now, it's every man for himself! It tripped me the hell out when he would speak his mind concerning other artists, but when fans speak their mind on him, he's sensitive. Poetic Justice, I guess.

I'm listening to PFunk right now and the shit makes me too mutherfuckin' happy. Cause, he got pissed and put his pisstation in his music! It's a fuckin' masterpiece to me! I hope he continues to get pissed, cause I'm loving this track!!!! In the words of another artist, I won't name: GIMME MORE, PRINCE! GIMME MORE!!!!!

i applaud ur stance however i would say 2 u 2 not destroy ur past merchandise cause he's already gotten his royalties from it. If anything, any future endeavors he wouldn't receive ur money. and another option u can go with if ur so inclined 2 get rid of ur merchandise, SELL IT! thus u can recoup some of ur money u got back peace

It took making him mad to get some REALLY OLD SCHOOL FUNK out of him again.

that's typical prince. remember that drivel that was the GOLD EXPERIENCE, or whatever? how he made it seem like it was this great wondrous piece that WB was trying to shelve? come to find out, their marketing guys were right. it was crap. two -- maybe three -- quality tunes out there. that's it. and one of them -- billy jack bitch -- was a response song to a particular reviewer who wasn't "yes ma'am" enough for prince and dared have an opinion contrary to what Prince felt was 'right'.

when prince is angry -- or sad -- he writes better music. conflict creates art. the more 'at peace' he is, the more bland and dull and lifeless his material becomes. do i need proof? we've 10 years of it.

But I guess he really doesn't have to explain his self because he's Prince.

actually, he hasn't produced a song to warrant this kind of free-for-all-do-whatever-you-want-and-that's-okay-because-you're-prince attitude, imo. not in damn near 20 years.

and we're supposed to believe that prince wants to give his fans exclusive photos and music, when he's PROVEN TO US time and time again that he cannot manage to do that. (by the way, i never did get my CRYSTAL BALL when i fuckin' pre-ordered it on his site, nor did i get a refund.)

this is all about greed. i don't care what anyone says. he doesn't want fans networking, because he can't control that network. he can wrap it up in as much legal mumbo-jumbo and false promises all he wants. but let's call a spade, a spade: he wants us to HAVE to go to whatever hack-kneed nonsense web shit he comes up with next. he wants us to pay for another LIFETIME membership without giving us reparations when the site proves to not last a 'lifetime'. he wants us to follow him around and pay by his rules (the word choice is not a misspelling by the way--it was intentional) so that he can continually milk the fans he got, because he's hardly making new fans, is he? PLANET EARTH and MUSICOLOGY may have been in the upper half of the charts, but they've yet to sell a million.

Let's face it. HQ, and prince.org and princefans handle fan-based business better than he could ever manage. He's proven this.

And he's envious of it. Jealous of it. And I, for one, am sick of it.

Prince music used to have value. I've bought Lovesexy and Sign o' the Times probably four or five times each. I'm notorious for losing stuff. But, I didn't mind repurchasing it -- even at inflated prices -- because it was WORTH it. I'd gladly pay it again, a hundred times over.

Musicology? My mom bought that for me as a present. I've since lost it; i won't be buying it again.

Prince's opinion on digital music 'disappearing' is more proof that he is a relic. Digital music doesn't fade -- bad music fades. 1-800-NEW-FUNK, anyone? I've digital files in my 5 yr old 50gb Seagate harddrive that has been with me the entire time. I value that as much as I do the 4000+ vinyl collection I amassed as a dj.

Prince can't understand that?

That's his problem.

I hope these court cases bleed the fucker dry.

I hope he has to close Paisley Park.

I hope his next tours flop, his next albums flop (which is more than likely), and his next website crashes. I hope he gets the message that you can't claim to like your fans and then treat them like this.

Look at what Radiohead did, prince... and call me when you wake up.

You want my $15 a cd?

You want my $100 for a ticket to see your old ass NOT do the splits anymore?

You want my $20 bones for a shirt... $15 for a calendar...?

You want my money for a lifetime membership at some half-assed website, designed by first-year web designer interns?

Then you better fuckin' learn to start showing me some fuckin' respect.

Jesus taught you that much, I'm sure.

As for me, I'm done giving Prince the benefit of the doubt, just because he wrote killer songs 20 years ago. That's no excuse to be an asshole.

indyenna, you took the words right out of my head... These folks don't get it, the site they post on and use is being sued. Prince doesn't want people using the fan sites... they say they support prince... yet post on these sites that prince is trying to get shut down... bizarre logic...

Frankly, the folks "supporting" prince are engaged in idol-worship... they don't really care about Prince's stance... just because he's "prince" he's actions are always ok... They'd feel the same way if Prince sued their grandmothers for accidentally downloading a song...

?rince made You Tube take off all of his videos and related songs. There was footage of the LOVESEXY tour on there. I liked that. (I didn't get to go to see him at that concert because I was a broke college student then.) It was sad to see all that just disappear.

He is "potentially" suing www.prince.org for pictures and likenesses of him in the galleries? WHAT IN THE FUCK?!!! (It is a fansite. Who heard of a fan site without pictures?)

I see that ?rince changed the name of the song PFUnk to F.U.N.K. now.(Sarcasm begins.) Some 180 degree turn.(Sarcasm ends.).

To all concerned about me destroying my personal collection of ?rince's music and merchandise:

1) Reselling was NEVER an option. If I were into reselling worthy stuff, I would've taken up antiques, stamp collecting, and the sort of thing that increases in value.

2) Giving the stuff away that I bought...Again, not a consideration or an option. No one "gave" me this stuff. I bought them. Yeah, ?rince made his royalties off of it. I got what I got as a listening experience. I can (and did)
destroy all of it. (?rince doesn't have to worry about this fan using his image, likeness, or any of his "intellectual" property. Anything after LOVESEXY wasn't very intellectual I tell you that.)

I love Prince, but aren't there bigger targets or causes to take-on rather than his fans? I don't think any of us are trying to be famous, using his name, are we? I don't get it. This is just a discussion group. I don't think anyone is getting any privileges or making some big bucks by talking about Prince?

I just think it's sad, and I don't really understand it.

One of my acquaintances apparently had some inside scoop on Prince's childhood. She said he was bullied mercilessly? She's pretty reliable, I would think there would be some truth to her story.

Anyway, I wonder now if Prince has become the bully?

Whatever.. It's just disappointing.

Weemolicious is a metaphor for us. (Sarcasm begins.) We (are) malicious.(Sarcasm ends.) "We" meaning "the ?rince fans".

"Malicious" as in being "deliberately harmful...motivated to cause harm and pain". To whom are "weemolicious" towards? (Sarcasm begins.) ?rince (Sarcasm ends.)

We were just being fans with our pictures of ?rince on www.prince.org. (What the fuck?) And this site gets served "cease and desist" orders (with the potentiality of financial damages.) for pictures of ?rince on his fansite. Maybe we should have pictures of Olivia Newton-fucking- John on here instead.

I love how your sig is what it is.....cause I'm wondering if you REALLY destroyed ALL of your Prince collection. If you really did.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! that is RIDICULOUS! You are SOOOOO gonnna kick yourself for that some day....who knows when but some day you will regret that..for sure! BUT...I don't think you really did.

Yep. I most certainly did. Believe it or not.

I did get rid of it all. It is ridiculous in your eyes. I am happy. I don't miss any of my collection. (Not EVEN the 12" extended version of "I Wish You Heaven" with the Hammond B-3 beeps in it and extended version of Scarlet Pussy on the flipside. HaHA!!)

I am not into ?rince. He is as passe' as those brown Louis Vuitton bags.
When I do buy a Louis Vuitton bag...I'll buy another ?rince song. (You could be waiting for sometime on that. Hehehe.)

Q:When will P.F.U.n.k or F.U.N.K. be de-F.U.N.K.T?
"My name is ?rince and I am F.U.N.K.ely suing you po', cancerous punx."
Excuse me...who are you again?

Does anyone know who “Weemolicious” is?

It's "weave-a-licious", as in "ghetto fabulous". The term didn't originate from Prince.

Fits right in with "fat" and "po" though. disbelief

Good article, They actually get it. It's ashamed that most of his fans don't. O well that song is funky.

Believe me. Most Prince fans, aren't that obsessed with all of this...nonsense.

Well, not the ones I've met at the concerts I've attended..

Well, I may be mad over a lot of things like a war and American schadenfreude but never over losing a ton of ?rince music and merchandise. (Maybe a ?rince jonesed fan who is sucker for an unappreciative artist's diss would be but...not I). ?rince has a right to diss his fans and I have a right to dismiss him.
