Some of the comments are what we all have been saying for years. Even the non-fan gets it. Prince does not. You know what? I would really care less if he had a great site that allowed us to be fans, but he doesn't nor does he provide anything in it's place. This is my voice, My weapon of choice | |

I hate when people say "Prince hates his fans". I always thought, how would they know. Like they know what Prince is thinking, or had some kinda private conversation with him, where as those were his exact words. Some people think I'm kinda cute

But also seriously I wouldn't go as far by saying that Prince hates us or his fans because of his actions to do what ever he is trying to do. Like protecting his self image as a JW. I am just curious, in the same instance, does Bill Gate hate his fans because he charges for say MS Word and we can not freely distribute it? I work for Software Company, and we provide an enabling technology, and you better believe we charge royalties. If you don't pay, we will come after you. Our IP, our trade and service marks, our copyrights are ours, and we created them, researched them, and paid to own the registrations. Do you think software companies have more rights than entertainers when it comes to being paid for their, lack of a better word, wares? | |

Does Bill Gates threaten people who post pictures of his dorky face? Does he remove videos of his speeches or interviews? I'm down with not letting people bootleg the hell out of your music, thats stealing. But some of the things he does, and his heavy handed approach is ridiculous. | |

But, I think the recent major activity is based on YouTube releasing that new software more than anything, not Prince hating his fans. It is not like Prince has anything to do with the process, he filed a lawsuit to protect his interests. The YouTube software or his attorney's must have some sort of spiders going and searching sites, and sending out a standard letter, based purely on content matching not on Prince targeting anyone. Honestly Bill Gates and Prince are Apples and Oranges. Bill doesn't have people dedicate sites to him nor does he go on tour and have followers like Prince does. Really you can't compare the two. We all love Prince's music. This has nothing to do about putting up his videos or putting up pics. And no it wasn't just a spider crawling around and found that youtube clip. Even if it was, that spider didn't send out the cease and disisst order. One would think (hope even) that it wasn't a blip and an instant C&D order based on that blip. Someone looked at it and made the decision to send it out. Most of what this is about is Prince's "right" to control what lies there on the web that is about him. As far as I know there was no copyright infringement on P.org. He doesn't own the domain, nor any of the images. I mean how would it be if let's say the President of the US said all things printed or said about him was against copyright law? That he owns all pics and discussions about him. I'm a freelance writer/photographer. You can bet I ask sites to take down stuff they used without getting permission first. Does that mean I hate them? Not at all. The whole point of copyright law is to allow the original creator of something to decide where, when and how (if at all) something gets disseminated. I don't know if fanaticism means people automatically forget this "minor" detail or what. But come on folks, this should be common sense. Prince doesn't hate his fans. If he did he sure as heck wouldn't ever play aftershows or have a website at all. The man has always been on the forefront of sticking up for artist's rights and this is no different. It may seem over the top because it's only pictures, but it's still THE LAW for pete's sake. Sites should be happy they weren't sued years ago (by anyone, including the major media sites they all rip off on a daily basis) because copyright violation carries ridiculous fines that not one of us on this forum would EVER want to pay. And that's for each infringement. It's always now. | |
