Had U - Message to WB?

Anyone notice, that Prince's first Warner Bros album was 'For You', and on his last Warner Bros album 'Chaos & Disorder' the track 'Had U' sounds like a kiss-off to Warner Bros? The lyrics would certainly suggest that to my ears.

cute, but It's got alittle more love invested in the song...It appears
slightly more sincere, than the investment relations with WarnerBros. cool

There is an interview floating around on the web that came out around the time when Emancipation dropped. He was asked about this. They asked him was it intentional and he said no.

Someone did an analysis and found that there was the same number of " ____ you" lines as there were Prince albums. They matched up the lyrics to the albums in order, and it was pretty interesting. Let's see if I can re-create it:

Missed U - For You
Called U - Prince
Found U - Dirty Mind
Begged U - Controversy
Convinced U - 1999
Saw U - Purple Rain
Held U - Around the World in a Day
Kissed U - Parade
Fondled U - Sign O the Times Album 1
Tempt U - Sign O the Times Album 2
Undress U - Lovesexy
Smelled U - Batman
Wanted U - Grafitti Bridge
Asked U - Diamonds and Pearls
Thanked U - Symbol
Mounted U - Black Album
Hurt U - Come
Disappoint U - Gold Experience
Fuck U - Chaos and Disorder
Had U - "Goodbye to Warner Brothers"

This is the order the albums were released. Obviously, the Black Album was recorded before Lovesexy.

Interesting.

TBH, only a couple of those really work, seems nice, but stretching it a bit.

Interesting idea I jizzed it around to try to make more sense of it

Missed U - For You
Called U - Prince
Found U - Dirty Mind
Begged U - Controversy
Convinced U - 1999
Saw U - Purple Rain
Held U - Around the World in a Day
Kissed U - Parade
Fondled U - Sign O the Times
Tempt U - Lovesexy
Undress U - Batman
Smelled U - Grafitti Bridge
Wanted U - Diamonds and Pearls
Asked U - Symbol
Thanked U - The Hits / The B-Sides
Mounted U - Come
Hurt U - Black Album
Disappoint U - Gold Experience
Fuck U - Chaos and Disorder
Had U - "Goodbye to Warner Brothers"

Can we explore this concept further and make any sense of it?

Missed U - For You (So Blue)
Called U - Prince (Still Waiting "To find that love to call my own")?
Found U - Dirty Mind (Head "I remember when I met u, baby")
Begged U - Controversy (Do Me Baby)
Convinced U - 1999 (All the Critics Love U)
Saw U - Purple Rain ("I only wanted 2 see u bathing in the purple rain")
Held U - Around the World in a Day ("They say the first time ain't the greatest")?
Kissed U - Parade (Kiss)
Fondled U - Sign O the Times ("And would U, would U let me kiss U there
You know down there where it counts")?
Tempt U - Lovesexy ("Don't kiss the beast")
Undress U - Batman (Scandalous)?
Smelled U - Grafitti Bridge (Film tanked)?
Wanted U - Diamonds and Pearls (Insatiable)?
Asked U - Symbol ("Or should we ask the man who wrote it there in the morning papers?")
Thanked U - The Hits / The B-Sides (Retrospective of Career to date)
Mounted U - Come (As in Mount a dead animal)?
Hurt U - Black Album (Something to do with this being withdrawn at the last moment)?
Disappoint U - Gold Experience (Didn't sell / First album as prince)
Fuck U - Chaos and Disorder (Thrown together to finish out the contract and become free)
Had U - "Goodbye to Warner Brothers"

The song is definately partly an illusion to WB. I think of it as a bookend to Dinner With Delores which is a metaphor to his decayed relationship with WB (a bloated, out of fashion, tired dinosaur wanting the same ole tricks)

Interesting theories, but I think you're all looking too hard for something that isn't there.

Thanks for the replies, some interesting lists there. I have to admit I do love that track though.
