i'm not going to "boycott", i'm just not as interested as i was.
i still don't have Planet Earth, and from what i've heard i'm not dying to get it. i'm sure i'll end up listening to it at some point.

as far as concerts are concerned, it would depend on where, ticket price, etc.

i'll reminisce about the old days, listen to the music i have, continue to play his stuff in my dj sets from time to time, but that's about it.

he's just not that interesting to me as he once was.

Oh and to answer the question of will I boycott Prince, HELL NO. You got me and a whole lot of fans all fucked up if you think that's gonna happen. I know damn well that I'm not going anywhere. Why should I? Anyone who's been a fan for at least 5 years should be used to this stuff by now and soon enough there will be a new album and single and all the haters and boycotters will be all on Prince's jock just like they usually are when new music drops.

I will say this much, if Prince is really bothering you this much, then do yourself a favor and just go for Christ sake. I'm not saying you shouldn't be mad but damn. People here have been acting like some relative died or something like 9/11 happened and it's not even close to being that serious. Stop making yourself miserable about something as small in the grand scheme of things as this. It's supposed to be all about the music right?

Damn that! I'm all for boycotting!! It's my money and if Prince doesn't appreciate my spending it on him then I won't!

Yes, Prince is a superbly multitalented musical genius but WE his fans made him the STAR that he is! All the talent in the world means NOTHING without the folks that'll spend their hard earned money for it!

Don't believe me, look at the top musical artists that are out now. The majority don't have an ounce of Prince's talent but what they do have is folks that'll spend their hard earned money on them and they are stars. When folks stop spending money on them, they become has-beens and reality show fillers.

A fate Prince apparently thinks can't happen to him because he's had folks like me who bought the good, the bad and the what the hell am I hearing ah well his next one could only be better, going to see him perform his hits for the last time for the umpteenth time and bought his stank ass perfumes just because!

Well how can you claim to support his decision to start legal action and then say this: "I might stop supporting him financially as a result, 4 what it's worth."

hmm

Personally I won't be boycotting him - no way! What has his decision to start proceedings against Ebay and You-Tube got anything to do with us? Do we own or have any legal or financial interests in either business? No. So why should I feel that I shouldn't buy any further Prince related stuff? I've been a fan for over 22 years and I'm not about to start getting all pissed off because my avatar at HQ has been removed. OK I can admit to being slightly disappointed about this stuff but not to the extent that it seems to be bothering a lot of people on here... disbelief

Exactly, I dare say it's getting scary in here though it's been a mess on the org for years. The people who call themselves fans want to rip Prince apart and then rip others apart if they can find something in all of this to support. I personally don't like what he's doing and I wish he'd stop all of this but it's his choice and I'm not going to lose sleep or money from this. As long as he's dropping new music on us then it's all love from me with the man. I'm here for the music, PERIOD.

come on my friend, P has been a mass of contradictions since day 1, it's waht makes him unique and maddening at the same time!. Are you really telling me that if the ever elusive classic rock funk album to beat P. Rain came out you wouldn't buy it, or if P toured in a small venue near you you wouldn't go?.

I thought about it, and no. I may not agree entirely with what he's doing, and I definitely don't agree with his approach or how he's handling the whole Youtube issue, but it's his right as artist and creator. In fact, though his tactics may be asshole-ish to the Nth degree, this melds perfectly with what he's always been trying to do in terms of artistic rights and ownership. Music might want to be free, but it doesn't want to be stolen.

What I think Prince should be doing though, instead of suing all these websites and companies and generally coming off as a prick, is finding a practical and appealing way to harness the power of the internet to his own advantage. Whatever or whoever is in control of 3121.com has not been doing a very good job of that. Like, at all. Former official sites weren't much better, either.

If Prince doesn't want people downloading or viewing his videos for free, that's fine. But if he's going to disallow that, he should find an avenue to release said videos to the people for some agreed-upon fee or trade. I think that's fair. Right now he's coming off as a greedy brat who won't share. People love your work, Prince. Let them have it in some way, or they will move on.

Maybe Prince has decided he has enough money now. Perhaps it's worth it to him to destroy traces of his past on the internet.

If he goes underground and becomes one of those David Sylvian guys who creates for a limited audience, great! I'll make an effort to keep up.

Maybe that's what he wants now, to just kick back and chill.

Prince has been alienating fans for years, and for all the wrong reasons. Sure, the name change and "slave" nonsense lost him many casual listeners, but at least we still had the music. Then the problems with 1800 New Funk, the Crystal Ball orders, the NPG Music Club issues, threatening fan sites...none of these things were especially endearing. Making it worse, the quality of his music began to lessen. With this latest round of stupidity on the heels of the mediocre album Planet Earth, I'm really just holding out on live performances and the small hope that some of his vault material will see the light of day without too much damage to its original form.

Maybe that's the issue there. Since converting, Prince has been going out of his way not only to act as if his former self and former work are unworthy, but to pretend it never existed in the first place. He refuses to sing certain songs and edits many of those he will. Maybe, just maybe, this has more to do with his clean slate ideas than money or ownership. It sounds goofy, yeah. But it's Prince. We all know he's prone to strange or baffling behaviour.

You sound like a reactionary republican -- saying inflammatory crap that if someone actually thought about for 20 seconds, would be dismissed as simplistic and missing the point. Yea, you're right - people shouldn't give a damn if Prince sues his shoeshiner (clever) but I think it is the proper domain for Fans (fams or whatever the hell you'd like to call them) to get upset if the artist they enjoy listening and viewing is avidly working AGAINST the fans listening or viewing them except in limited venues where the artist profits. This isn't encroaching on a personal battle by prince, but goes to the very essence of what being a fan of a musician is all about - - listening to their music!

I never cared that Prince was a jehovah's witness, that he seems like a bad friend, that he's contradictory, that he pisses purple, whatever - that's irrelevant....but his personal battle against bootlegs and his use of intellectual property rights DOES effect me as a fan since it effects how much and easily I can listen to his music. It's hard to CONCENTRATE on what's no longer available to me. Yes, he's been very prolific and given us more "legal" music than any other artist of our time -- but that's irrelevant. As a fan - we want all of it; that's our proper role afterall. So we're not 15 year olds whining about his personal matters, but are FANS upset that he is limiting what we can enjoy.

Look, if I could hang in there when he was threatening to sue his fans, en massse, directly (1997), then nothing is going to change this time. I may hate his guts and the things he does, but there's no point in me going through the motions of ranting and raving about how "I'm never going to support Prince again." ... again. I'm a lifer. I accept that. I'm always going to be interested in his music. Some of us have lived through this, up close and personal, before.

Boycott Prince for what? I really think some fans are being ridiculous about the whole thing. I mean although I do think that suing youtube and ebay is not the best idea, I respect that it's Prince's choice. Whether you agree with him or not, Prince has the right to do whatever he pleases as far as his music and image is concerned.

Umm confuse

As is often the case on the internet, my original post has been misinterpreted.
I didnt start this thread as a 'call 2 arms' against Prince. I was simply posing the question as 2 whether people may or may not boycott him, as it's been suggested in many of the comments @ sites like perez.com, youtube etc over the last couple of days. rolleyes
Although it may seem contradictory, I do in fact support Prince on his stance against copyright infringement in general. That is not the reason I cited as 2 why I may not continue 2 by his product.
Please reread:

I said:

"I'm of the opinion that everything that 1st got me interested in Prince, and kept me interested all these years, as an artist, has dwindled and eroded steadily over time. Primarily his subject matter.
Plus the guy is a walking contradiction whose main motivation now seems 2 b greed.
