I can only come up with two at the moment:

1. Sign 'o' the Times (and before y'all flame the shit outta me--I never said it was a BAD album, I think it's terribly OVERRATED.)
2. Planet Earth
3. ???

*disclaimer--overrated among fans (fans=people who post on the Org or HQ)

I agree MikeMatronik! You can say that the title track is a little overrated (it's probably one of his greatest songs), but as an album, you can't say it's overrated. People (casual fans and all) still say that Purple Rain is his best, but we hardcore Prince fans know SOTT is by far, his masterpiece.

SOTT (the track) really deserves the praise it gets. It's perfect both lyricly and in terms of production. It's in temporal.

I think what makes SOTT (the album), the masterpiece it is, is the fact it has all of the dimensions and possibilities that Prince can do and be.

Exactly. But what I'm saying is that some people still haven't recognized the brilliance and scope of the SOTT album and they think Purple Rain is his ballyhooed (and best) album.

SOTT is still his greatest achievement by far, but I just don't think it's too overrated... It still outshines every album he's done!

Maybe that's why Purple Rain is still the Prince album that I played the least.

After SOTT did some great albums like LoveSexy, Come/Gold, Rainbow Children

I agree... Purple Rain is one of his best records, but there are other albums that are just more superior.

Purple Rain is still a #3 favorite of mine from Prince, even though now I tend to listen to that album less as well..

No, SOTT the ALBUM is *the* most overrated album amongst fans (again my definition of fans=Orgers & HQ'ers). I would not say SOTT (the song) is over-rated, that would be Adore. Most over-rated song evah.

Lovesexy is the masterpiece. yes There is not a weak track on that album, SOTT has a few.

I don't want to hijack the thread with the SOTT debate so I'll leave it at that.

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions! biggrin I think SOTT is his greatest, while I also believe LoveSexy is a good album with some flaws...

Parade is quite a poor album, compared to what he was capable of at the time.....

Going out on a limb here but hey... 3 albums that can never ever be too over rated (and if people think they are well I'd like specific reasons why please!)

Parade
Prince

I wouldn't say overrated. I think people love it so much because it wsa the last Revolution lp and because of the Wedny and Lisa hype. Really, I think this lp is his most Sly Stone effort (sans "Kiss") more than a W&L collab.

I've often wondered if construction of a red lightsaber takes place before you can become a Republican, or is it something you do after initiation. Dah, well... shrug

It's his most collabrative effort as well and it's certainly more musically cohesive than 1985's ATWIAD.

Again, I think that's overstated. W&L and Susannah on BGV's. An Orchestra. Co-writers on two songs (cuz John L. ain't write shit!) Dirty Mind had comparative input IMO.
